22 THE TREATMENT OF MODERN WESTERN DISEASES WITH CHINESE MEDICINEDISEASE CAUSES & MECHANISMS RESULTINGIN LIVER DEPRESSION1. Unfulfilled desires2. The sequelae of anger3. Insufficient nourishment and emolliation byblood4. Insufficient enrichment and moistening by yin5. Insufficient warming and steaming by yang6. Any of the four yin depressions7. Anything which inhibits or damages the lungs’diffusion & downbearing8. Any evil qi which hinders and obstructs thefree flow of qiIf the liver does not receive sufficient blood, the liver will alsonot be able to maintain its proper control over coursing anddischarge. This is based on the idea from the Nei Jing (InnerClassic) that, if the eyes obtain blood, the eyes can see; if thehands obtain blood, the hands can grasp; and if the feetobtain blood, the feet can step. Likewise, all tissues andorgans in the body can only do their function if they receivesufficient blood to nourish them. This theory has largeimplications for women which we will discuss below under“Sex & Age.”Since “blood and essence share a common source,” bloodand yin are part and parcel of a single entity. Therefore, justas the liver cannot function if it does not receive nourishmentby sufficient blood, it also cannot function if it doesnot receive adequate emolliation and moistening. Further, the function of the liver is also empowered, at least in part,by the warming and steaming of kidney yang/ministerial fire. Therefore, if kidney yang becomes vacuous and debilitated, this may also cause or aggravate liver depression qi stagnation. The liver is only one of the two primary viscera which controlthe movement and free flow of the qi. The other viscusis the lungs. “The lungs control the qi of the entire body.”This means that it is the lungs’ downward depuration anddiffusing that supply the pushing power for the movement ofthe qi. “The liver governs coursing and discharge.” Thismeans that the liver allows or permits the free and easy flowof qi. In order for the qi to flow freely, both viscera mustwork in a coordinated fashion. Therefore, anything whichhinders or obstructs the lungs’ downward depuration anddiffusion may cause or aggravate liver depression qi stagnation.Lung failure to depurate and diffuse may be due toeither vacuity or repletion. If the lung qi (derived primarilyfrom the spleen’s upbearing of clear yang) is vacuous andweak, it cannot do its function of depurating and diffusing.Likewise, if evil qi lodge in and obstruct the lungs’ qi mechanism, the lungs will also fail to depurate and diffuse properly.Such evil qi can either be externally invading or internallyengendered. And finally, the presence of any evil qi and especially theother four yin or material depressions may also hinder andobstruct the free flow of qi. Because the qi cannot flow freely, the liver cannot do its duty of coursing and discharge. Thismeans that, short-term, the presence of evil qi may aggravateany pre-existing liver depression qi stagnation, but, longterm,it also means that the continued, enduring presence ofevil qi may actually cause liver depression qi stagnation incases where it was not already present.Hence, there are numerous causes for the engenderment andaggravation of liver depression qi stagnation. This is why thispattern rarely presents in its simple, discreet textbook form.It is also why this pattern complicates virtually all adultchronic diseases. In that case, either liver depression is themain pattern, and therefore, one should pick their guidingCOMMONLY USED CHINESE MEDICINALS WHICHFREE THE FLOW OF THE NETWORK VESSELS1.
