CHRONIC FATIGUE IMMUNE DEFICIENCY SYNDROME (CFIDS) 151Yu is an astringing medicinal, but it also supplements liverblood and kidney qi. Hence, it is sometimes also said to fillthe essence and invigorate yang. Since the former and latterheavens are mutually rooted, its inclusion in this formulahelps make the formula more harmonious and holistic.ADDITIONS & SUBTRACTIONS: If there is a tendency towardheat, add 3-6 grams <strong>of</strong> Huang Lian (Rhizoma Coptidis) andnine grams <strong>of</strong> Huang Qin (Radix Scutellariae). If there is concomitantyang vacuity, add nine grams each <strong>of</strong> Xian Ling Pi(Herba Epimedii) and Xian Mao (Rhizoma Curculiginis). Ifthere is torpid intake, add nine grams each <strong>of</strong> Shen Qu (MassaMedica Fermentata), Shan Zha (F<strong>ru</strong>ctus Crataegi), and Mai Ya(F<strong>ru</strong>ctus Germinatus Hordei). If there is insomnia and heartpalpitations, add nine grams <strong>of</strong> Ku Shen (Radix SophoraeFlavescentis) and 12-15 grams <strong>of</strong> stir-fried Suan Zao Ren(Semen Zizyphi Spinosae). If there is concomitant dampness,add 12 grams <strong>of</strong> Fu Ling (Poria) and nine grams <strong>of</strong> Ban Xia(Rhizoma Pinelliae), at least as a beginning. If there is yin vacuity,add 9-12 grams <strong>of</strong> Gou Qi Zi (F<strong>ru</strong>ctus Lycii), Nu Zhen Zi(F<strong>ru</strong>ctus Ligustri Lucidi), Wu Wei Zi (F<strong>ru</strong>ctus Schisandrae),and/or processed He Shou Wu (Radix Polygoni Multiflori). Ifthere is vacuity heat, add 9-12 grams <strong>of</strong> Zhi Mu (RhizomaAnemarrhenae) and Huang Bai (Cortex Phellodendri). If thereis blood stasis, add nine grams <strong>of</strong> Chi Shao (Radix PaeoniaeRubrae), Dan Shen (Radix Salviae Miltiorrhizae), Dan Pi(Cortex Moutan), and/or Yi Mu Cao (Herba Leonuri). If thereare lingering wind evils in the exterior, add nine grams <strong>of</strong> FangFeng (Radix Saposhnikoviae), while for warm evils hidden ordeeply lying in the blood, consider adding 9-15 grams <strong>of</strong> Zi Cao(Radix Arnebiae/Lithospermi), Jin Yin Hua (Flos Loniceraex),Lian Qiao (F<strong>ru</strong>ctus Forsythiae), Pu Gong Ying (Herba Taraxaci),and/or Ban Lan Gen (Radix Isatidis/Baphicacanthi).ACUPUNCTURE & MOXIBUSTION: Xin Shu (Bl 15), DanZhong (CV 17), Shen Men (Ht 7), Zu San Li (St 36), San YinJiao (Sp 6), Tai Chong (Liv 3)ANALYSIS OF FORMULA: Using supplementing techniqueon Xin Shu, Dan Zhong, and Shen Men supplements theheart and quiets the spirit. Supplementing Zu San Li andSan Yin Jiao fortifies the spleen and supplements the qi.Draining Tai Chong courses the liver and rectifies the qi.ADDITIONS & SUBTRACTIONS: For marked liver depressionqi stagnation, add He Gu (LI 4). If there is rib-side distention,add Qi Men (Liv 14) and/or Zhang Men (Liv 13). Ifthere is heat harassing the heart, add Da Ling (Per 7). If thereis liver depression/depressive heat, replace Tai Chong withXing Jian (Liv 2). If there is stomach heat, add Nei Ting (St44). If there are heart palpitations, add Nei Guan (Per 6)and/or Jian Shi (Per 5). If there are night sweats, add Yin Xi(Ht 6). If there are loose stools or diarrhea due to spleenvacuity, add Pi Shu (Bl 20) and Wei Shu (Bl 21). If there ismuscle-joint soreness and pain, add Yang Ling Quan (GB 34)and Ge Shu (Bl 17) as well as local points near the affectedarea. If there is concomitant kidney yang vacuity, add moxibustionat Shen Shu (Bl 23) and Ming Men (GV 4).REMARKS1. Most patients with CFIDS have a history <strong>of</strong> one or moreallergies, hypoglycemia, and candidiasis. <strong>The</strong>refore, Chinesedietary therapy is extremely important. This means eating ahypoallergenic, yeast-free, clear, bland diet.2. Although patients with CFIDS suffer from severe, debilitatingdisease, they should, nevertheless, try to get somephysical exercise. <strong>The</strong> amount <strong>of</strong> exercise needs to be carefullyregulated, however, so that the net result is more energyand feeling <strong>of</strong> dy<strong>nam</strong>ic well-being as opposed to furtherexhaustion and fatigue. <strong>The</strong> right amount <strong>of</strong> exercise for aparticular patient can usually be arrived at by trial and errorand usually needs to be constantly adjusted. It is very importantto realize the spleen-fortifying, liver-coursing, depression-resolving,and dampness-overcoming effects <strong>of</strong> exercise.3. <strong>The</strong> following table shows the number <strong>of</strong> patients presentingwith different patterns in a study conducted in China on chronicfatigue patients. <strong>The</strong> reader should note that a single patientmay have presented with more than one pattern. <strong>The</strong>refore, thetotal numbers in this table add up to more than 130.
