MaHuang diffuses the lungs and resolves the exterior. HuangQin, Jie Geng, Gan Cao, and Sang Bai Pi clear the lungs. GuaLou and Jie Geng loosen the chest. Ma Huang, Xing Ren, andSang Bai Pi diffuse and downbear the lung qi. Xing Ren, GuaLou, and Jie Geng disperse phlegm. Lian Qiao and Ban LanGen clear heat both in the defensive and qi divisions. WithHuang Qin, they also resolve toxins. Gan Cao also harmonizesall the other medicinals in the formula.ADDITIONS & SUBTRACTIONS: If there is severe coughwith pr<strong>of</strong>use, thick phlegm, add 30 grams <strong>of</strong> Yu Xing Cao(Herba Houtttuyniae) and 12 grams each <strong>of</strong> Qing Dai(Pulvis Indigonis) and Hai Ge Ke (Concha Meretricis/Cyclinae). If oral thirst is severe, add nine grams <strong>of</strong> Tian HuaFen (Radix Trichosanthis). If there are vexation, agitation,and restlessness, double the Shi Gao and add nine grams <strong>of</strong>Zhi Zi (F<strong>ru</strong>ctus Gardeniae).
