ALLERGIC RHINITIS 51ANALYSIS OF FORMULA: Draining Shang Xing and YingXiang diffuses and frees the flow of the nose. Moxibustionshould be used on Shang Xing. Supplementing Shen Shu, TaiXi, and Fei Shu with moxibustion warms and supplementsthe kidneys and lungs.ADDITIONS & SUBTRACTIONS: Please see pattern #2above. If there is concomitant kidney yin and yang vacuity, omit moxibustion on Shen Shu and replace Tai Xi with FuLiu (Ki 7).REMARKS1. During acute attacks, either use modified Cang Er Zi Sanalone or combine it with whatever formula addresses thepatient’s underlying disease mechanisms. However, inbetween attacks, the patient should take whatever formula isindicated for their habitual bodily vacuity and deep-lyingphlegm. If the rhinitis is seasonal, begin supplementing theroot six weeks to three months before the offending season. For instance, one can use modifications of Huang Qi RenShen Tang (Astragalus & Ginseng Decoction) for the preventionof fall season rhinitis. This formula is comprised of:Huang Qi (Radix Astragali), 15g, Dang Shen (RadixCodonopsitis), 12g, Bai Zhu (Rhizoma AtractylodisMacrocephalae), Cang Zhu (Rhizoma Atractylodis), MaiMen Dong (Tuber Ophiopogonis), Huang Bai (CortexPhellodendri), Dang Gui (Radix Angelicae Sinensis), Wu WeiZi (Fructus Schisandrae), and Chen Pi (Pericarpium CitriReticulatae), 9g each, mix-fried Gan Cao(Radix Glycyrrhizae)and Shen Qu (Massa Medica Fermentata), 6g each, and Sheng Ma (Rhizoma Cimicifugae), 4.5g. In this case, summerheat and overconsumption of sweet foods andchilled liquids in the late summer damage the spleen andengender deep-lying phlegm rheum.2. Appropriate Chinese dietary therapy is of utmost importancein this condition since a damaged spleen always playsa part in real-life Western patients. This means primarilyavoidance of foods which damage the spleen as well as foodswhich strongly engender fluids and sticking to a clear, blanddiet.3. Most Chinese textbooks describe lung-spleen, spleen-kidney,and phlegm dampness patterns separately. However, phlegm dampness is the result of an underlying spleen qivacuity, while kidney yang vacuity is always seen as an evolutionof and in combination with spleen qi vacuity.Especially in this condition, we believe that listing the patternsseparately in this way is not consonant with real-lifepractice.4. Practitioners should note that there is no wind heat patternof allergic rhinitis. The Western medical pathognomonicsigns and symptoms of this condition include clear, waterynasal discharge. In a wind heat exterior pattern, there typicallyis yellow nasal mucus. A clear, white, watery nasal discharge,on the other hand, indicates cold rheum. If allergicrhinitis transforms into acute sinusitis, then there can be ayellow nasal discharge. However, that then is a different diseasediagnosis.
