In addition,Gui Zhi and Du Huo warm the channels and treat impedimentpain. Du Huo dispels evils especially in the lower part<strong>of</strong> the body, while Ge Gen resolves the muscles, especially inthe bladder channels in the upper back. Du Huo and Ge Genare probably the best Chinese medicinals to dispel wind andstop pain in the back, with Ge Gen better for the upper backand Du Huo better for the lower back. Chuan Wu, Fu Zi,Gan Jiang, Xi Xin, and Gui Zhi scatter cold, dispel dampness,and stop pain. Fu Zi and Xi Xin are very powerful for stoppingpain. Gan Cao harmonizes all the other medicinals <strong>of</strong>this formula and controls the toxicity <strong>of</strong> Fu Zi.ADDITIONS & SUBTRACTIONS: If there is concomitantkidney vacuity, add nine grams each <strong>of</strong> Sang Ji Sheng (HerbaTaxilli) and Xu Duan (Radix Dipsaci). If there is a severeheavy sensation in the low back, add nine grams <strong>of</strong> Cang Zhu(Rhizoma Atractylodis). For concomitant spleen vacuity, add12 grams each <strong>of</strong> Bai Zhu (Rhizoma AtractylodisMacrocephalae) and Fu Ling (Poria). For concomitant bloodstasis, add nine grams <strong>of</strong> Chi Shao (Radix Paeoniae Rubrae)and six grams each <strong>of</strong> Ru Xiang (Olibanum) and Mo Yao(Myrrha). For concomitant wind cold with migrant pain orpain radiating to the leg or rib-side, add nine grams each <strong>of</strong>Qiang Huo (Radix Et Rhizoma Notopterygii) and Fang Feng(Radix Saposhnikoviae).ACUPUNCTURE & MOXIBUSTION: <strong>The</strong> following methodmay be used if modern investigations (i.e., x-rays, CT scan,or myelography) show precisely the location <strong>of</strong> the herniation:A. If the nucleus has moved posteriorly into the extraduralspace, needle bilateraly the Jia Ji (M-BW-35) corresponding tothe affected vertebra plus the Jia Ji above and below the affectedvertebra. In other words, for herniation <strong>of</strong> the nucleusbetween L2 and L3, needle the Jia Ji <strong>of</strong> L1, 2, and 3. Use evensupplementing-even draining method and moxibustion.B. If the nucleus has moved posterolaterally and is puttingpressure on the rachidian nerve, needle the Jia Ji (M-BW-35)on the opposite side <strong>of</strong> the vertebra with the herniation plusthe Jia Ji above and below the affected vertebra, always in theopposite side <strong>of</strong> the herniation. In other words, for herniation<strong>of</strong> the nucleus between L2 and L3, needle the Jia Ji <strong>of</strong> L1, 2,and 3 but only on the opposite side <strong>of</strong> the herniation. Useeven supplementing-even draining method and moxibustion.<strong>The</strong>n add to the Jia Ji other local points according to thelocation <strong>of</strong> pain, such as: Ming Men (GV 4), Yao Yang Guan(GV 3), Xuan Shu (GV 5), San Jiao Shu (Bl 22), Shen Shu (Bl23), Qi Hai Shu (Bl 24), Da Chang Shu (Bl 25), Guan YuanShu (Bl 26), or a shi point(s). Use moxibustion and drainingmethod.ANALYSIS OF FORMULA: All these points warm the channels,scatter cold, and dispel dampness, free the flow <strong>of</strong> thenetwork vessels and stop pain.ADDITIONS & SUBTRACTIONS: For lateral pain on thebladder channel, add Wei Zhong (Bl 40) or Kun Lun (Bl 60).For central pain on the governing vessel, add Chang Qiang(GV 1), Shui Gou (GV 26), or Hou Xi (SI 3). For both lateraland central pain, add Shen Mai (Bl 62) plus Hou Xi (SI3). For buttock pain, add Zhi Bian (Bl 54) or Huan Tiao (GB30). For cold pain in the low back, buttocks, and lowerlimbs, moxa Zhi Bian (Bl 54), Cheng Fu (Bl 36), and ChengShan (Bl 57). For pain radiating to the lateral side <strong>of</strong> thethigh, add Feng Shi (GB 31). For pain radiating to the posteriorside <strong>of</strong> the thigh, add Yin Men (Bl 37). For pain radiatingto the lateral side <strong>of</strong> the lower leg, add Yang Ling Quan(GB 34) or Xuan Zhong (GB 39). For pain radiating to thecalf, add Cheng Shan (Bl 57). For severe cold pain and coldlimbs, moxa Ming Men (GV 4). For lack <strong>of</strong> strength in thelow back and knees, add Fu Liu (Ki 7). For digestive troubles,add Gong Sun (Sp 4). For lumbar and hip pain, add BaiHuan Shu (Bl 30) and Ju Liao (GB 29). For lumbosacral andcoccygeal pain, add Yin Bao (Liv 9) and Ci Liao (Bl 32) orother Ba Liao points.2. WIND DAMP IMPEDIMENT PATTERNMAIN SYMPTOMS: Lower and upper back pain which is notfixed in location but migrates around. <strong>The</strong> pain in the lowback is <strong>of</strong>ten accompanied by heaviness and can radiate tothe lower extremities. This is accompanied by numbness <strong>of</strong>the skin, changes in the condition associated with changes inthe weather, slight aversion to wind and cold, bodily heaviness,a pale tongue with thin, white or thin, yellow fur, anda floating, fine, bowstring pulse.NOTE: In this pattern, wind cold evils are associated with qiand blood vacuity which have allowed these evils to invade.TREATMENT PRINCIPLES: Dispel wind and eliminatedampness, diffuse impediment and free the flow <strong>of</strong> the networkvessels
