For severe joint pain, addsix grams each <strong>of</strong> Ru Xiang (Olbanum) and Mo Yao(Myrrha ). If there is coolness <strong>of</strong> the joint, add nine grams <strong>of</strong>Zhi Fu Zi (Radix Lateralis Praeparatus Aconiti Carmichaeli).For joint pain in the upper limbs, add 15 grams <strong>of</strong> JiangHuang (Rhizoma Curcumae Longae). If there is yin vacuity fire effulgence,add nine grams each <strong>of</strong> Huang Bai (Cortex Phellodendri) andZhi Mu (Rhizoma Anemarrhenae). If there is severe stiffness<strong>of</strong> the sinews and inhibited flexion and extension <strong>of</strong> thejoints, add 20 grams <strong>of</strong> Ji Xue Teng (Caulis Spatholobi), 15grams <strong>of</strong> Luo Shi Teng (Caulis Trachelospermi), and threegrams <strong>of</strong> Di Long (Pheretima), powdered and taken with thestrained decoction. If there is concomitant wind damp heatwith a burning sensation, redness, and swelling in the affectedarea, subtract Xi Xin, Fang Feng, and Du Zhong, and add12 grams each <strong>of</strong> Ren Dong Teng (Caulis Lonicerae), Sang Zhi(Ramulus Mori), Han Fang Ji (Radix Stephaniae), and XiXian Cao (Herba Siegesbeckiae).ACUPUNCTURE & MOXIBUSTION: Fu Liu (Ki 7), Da Zhu(Bl 11), Xuan Zhong (GB 39), the local points describedunder the additions and subtractions in pattern #1 above
