396 THE TREATMENT OF MODERN WESTERN DISEASES WITH CHINESE MEDICINEWu Gong (Scolopendra) 0.5g(powdered and taken with the strained decoction)ANALYSIS OF FORMULA: Wu Shao She, Tu Bie Chong, DiLong, and Wu Gong together free the flow <strong>of</strong> the network vessels,dispel phlegm, and strongly stop pain. Chuan Wu andCao Wu track down wind in the vessels and bones, dispelevils and strongly stop pain. Bai Jie Zi transforms phlegmand treats impediment associated with phlegm. Hong Huaand Ru Xiang quicken the blood, transform stasis, and stoppain. Gu Sui Bu quickens the blood and transforms stasis,connects the sinews and knits the bones. Qiang Huo dispelswind dampness and treats impediment.NOTE: Cao Wu and Chuan Wu should only be used in theirprocessed form and should be decocted for a long time. <strong>The</strong>amounts used above are very strong. <strong>The</strong>refore, one must attentivelysupervise the reactions <strong>of</strong> the patient and observe the sixprecautions when using Aconite (see Dui Yao: <strong>The</strong> Art <strong>of</strong>Combining Chinese Medicinals available from Blue Poppy Press).ADDITIONS & SUBTRACTIONS: If there is concomitant qivacuity, add 18 grams <strong>of</strong> Huang Qi (Radix Astragali) and 15grams <strong>of</strong> Dang Shen (Radix Codonopsitis). If there is concomitantkidney yang vacuity, add nine grams each <strong>of</strong> YinYang Huo (Herba Epimedii) and Xian Mao (RhizomaCurculiginis). If there is concomitant kidney yin vacuity,subtract Cao Wu and Chuan Wu and add 15 grams each <strong>of</strong>Sheng Di (uncooked Radix Rehmanniae), Niu Xi (RadixAchyranthis Bidentatae), and Sang Ji Sheng (Herba Taxilli). Ifthere is concomitant blood vacuity, decrease the dosage <strong>of</strong>Chuan Wu and Cao Wu down to six grams and add 12 grams<strong>of</strong> Dang Gui (Radix Angelicae Sinensis). If there are subcutaneousnodulations, add 18 grams <strong>of</strong> Wang Bu Liu Xing(Semen Vaccariae). If there is severe numbness, add 18 grams<strong>of</strong> Ji Xue Teng (Caulis Spatholobi). If there is concomitantdamp heat, subtract Cao Wu, Chuan Wu, and Qiang Huo,and add 12 grams each <strong>of</strong> Han Fang Ji (Radix Stephaniae)and Qin Jiao (Radix Gentianae Macrophyllae). For slimytongue fur with chest and abdominal oppression, add ninegrams each <strong>of</strong> Chen Pi (Pericarpium Citri Reticulatae), FuLing (Poria), and Ban Xia (Rhizoma Pinelliae).If there are no nodulations, deformation <strong>of</strong> the joint, orslimy tongue fur, i.e., there is no phlegm but only stasis,replace Su Feng Yin Jia Jian with Shen Tong Zhu Yu Tang JiaJian (Body Pain Expel Stasis Decoction with Additions &Subtractions): Tao Ren (Semen Persicae), Hong Hua (FlosCarthami), Niu Xi (Radix Achyranthis Bidentatae), Wu LingZhi (Feces Trogopterori), and Dang Gui (Radix AngelicaeSinensis), 12g each, and Xiang Fu (Rhizoma Cyperi), QinJiao (Radix Gentianae Macrophyllae), Qiang Huo (Radix EtRhizoma Notopterygii), Di Long (Pheretima), and ChuanXiong (Rhizoma Chuanxiong), 9g each.ACUPUNCTURE & MOXIBUSTION: Feng Long (St 40), ZuSan Li (St 36), Ge Shu (Bl 17), Xue Hai (Sp 10), the localpoints described under the additions and subtractions in pattern#1 aboveANALYSIS OF FORMULA: Supplementing Zu San Li supplementsthe spleen to prevent further phlegm accumulation.
