Shu Di, Gou Qi Zi, and Tu Si Zi supplementthe kidneys and help foster essence. In addition, TuSi Zi, Nu Zhen Zi, and Gou Qi Zi brighten the eyes. Tu Si Zialso secures and astringes essence and urine. Ba Ji Tian supplementsthe kidneys and invigorates yang, while Fu Ziwarms and invigorates yang. Ji Xue Teng, Dang Gui, HongHua, Chong Wei Zi, Lu Lu Tong, and Tao Ren quicken theblood and transform stasis. Tao Ren also moistens the intestinesand frees the flow <strong>of</strong> the stools. Dang Shen fortifies thespleen and supplements the qi. Ifthere is yin vacuity-fire effulgence, add nine grams each <strong>of</strong>Huang Bai (Cortex Phellodendri) and Zhi Mu (RhizomaAnemarrhenae). If there is more marked fatigue and bodilyweakness, add up to 30 grams <strong>of</strong> Huang Qi (Radix Astragali).If there is low back pain, add 12 grams each <strong>of</strong> Du Zhong(Cortex Eucommiae) and Sang Ji Sheng (Herba Taxilli). Ifthere is phlegm misting the clear orifices, add nine grams <strong>of</strong>Shi Chang Pu (Rhizoma Acori Tatarinowii). For decreased sexualdesire, add nine grams each <strong>of</strong> Xian Mao (RhizomaCurculiginis) and Yin Yang Huo (Herba Epimedii).ACUPUNCTURE & MOXIBUSTION: Zu San Li (St 36), FuLiu (Ki 7), San Yin Jiao (Sp 6), Ge Shu (Bl 17), Gan Shu (Bl18), Pi Shu (Bl 20), Shen Shu (Bl 23), Jing Ming (Bl 1), QiuHou (M-HN-8), Cheng Qi (St 1)ANALYSIS OF FORMULA: Supplementing Zu San Li, San YinJiao, and Pi Shu fortifies the spleen and boosts the qi.Supplementing Ge Shu and Gan Shu supplements the liverand nourishes the blood. Supplementing Fu Liu, the metalmotherpoint <strong>of</strong> the kidneys, supplements the kidneys andenriches yin. Supplementing Shen Shu with moxibustion supplementsthe kidneys and invigorates yang. SupplementingJing Ming, Qiu Hou, and/or Cheng Qi brightens the eyes.ADDITIONS & SUBTRACTIONS: If there is marked bloodstasis, needle Ge Shu and San Yin Jiao with even supplementing-evendraining technique. If there is marked qi vacuity,add Tai Bai (Sp 3). If there is marked yang vacuity, alsomoxa Guan Yuan (CV 4) and Ming Men (GV 4).REMARKS1. Vision degeneration problems are <strong>of</strong>ten difficult to treatsatisfactorily with either fine needle acupuncture or internallyadministered Chinese medicinals. One explanation forthis is that there is blood stasis in the grandchild networkvessels which nourish the eyes, and fine needles are not sogood for freeing the flow <strong>of</strong> the network vessels, especially inthis region. <strong>The</strong>refore, daily local self-massage, includingtapotement around the orbits <strong>of</strong> the eyes, is recommended aslocal adjunctive therapy. Likewise, cupping, gua sha, andbleeding therapy may also be helpful adjunctively as these are
