63POSTCONCUSSION SYNDROMEPostconcussion syndrome is made up <strong>of</strong> a wide variety <strong>of</strong>symptoms, such as headache and impaired memory, eventhough no defect can be demonstrated objectively. After amild head injury, there is headache, dizziness, difficulty concentrating,depression, apathy, and anxiety. <strong>The</strong>se symptomscan cause considerable disability and tend to be worse thanafter severe head injury. <strong>The</strong> part <strong>of</strong> the brain damaged isunclear, and this syndrome is more common in those with apremorbid neurotic disposition. <strong>The</strong> results <strong>of</strong> treatmentwith <strong>Western</strong> d<strong>ru</strong>gs and psychotherapy vary.CHINESE DISEASE CATEGORIZATION: <strong>The</strong> symptoms<strong>of</strong> postconcussion syndrome fall under the Chinesemedical disease categories <strong>of</strong> tou tong, headache, tou xuan,dizziness, jian wang, forgetfulness, yu zheng, depression, nansi, difficulty thinking, shen si huang hu, abstraction <strong>of</strong> thespirit, and you, anxiety.DISEASE CAUSES: External injury to the region <strong>of</strong> the headDISEASE MECHANISMS: External injury to the headresults in severing the channels and vessels in the localregion. Since the vessels promote the movement <strong>of</strong> theblood, extravasated blood becomes static. This static bloodmay obst<strong>ru</strong>ct the clear orifices <strong>of</strong> the head, thus resulting inunclear thinking and speech, headache, dizziness, etc. Sincethe qi moves the blood and qi and blood travel together,static blood impedes the free flow <strong>of</strong> the qi. Hence bloodstasis may be complicated by the symptoms <strong>of</strong> qi stagnation,such as irritability and depression. Qi stagnation may thenlead to ascendant hyperactivity <strong>of</strong> liver yang, thus giving riseto dizziness, emotional rashness, vexation and agitation, anda pounding headache. Qi stagnation may also lead to spleenvacuity if a replete liver assails spleen earth, while spleen qivacuity may lead to heart blood vacuity.
