CERVICAL SPONDYLOSIS 123(Rhizoma Ligustici), Fang Feng (Radix Saposhnikoviae),Chuan Xiong (Rhizoma Chuanxiong), Wei Ling Xian (RadixClematidis), and Cang Zhu (Rhizoma Atractylodis), 6g each, and Gan Cao (Radix Glycyrrhizae), 3g.For preponderant cold impediment with severe aversion tocold, a cold sensation in the back of the neck, and worseningof pain with cold, replace Gui Zhi Jia Ge Gen Tang Jia Jian withWu Tou Tang Jia Wei (Aconite Decoction with Added Flavors):Ge Gen (Radix Puerariae), 12g, Qiang Huo (Radix Et RhizomaNotopterygii), Bai Shao (Radix Paeoniae), and uncookedHuang Qi (Radix Astragali), 9g each, Chuan Wu (RadixAconiti Carmichaeli) (decocted at least 30 minutes beforeadding the other medicinals), Ma Huang (Herba Ephedrae),and Gui Zhi (Ramulus Cinnamomi), 6g each, and Xi Xin(Herba Asari) and Gan Cao (Radix Glycyrrhizae), 3g each. For preponderant wind impediment with migratory painand aversion to wind, replace Gui Zhi Jia Ge Gen Tang JiaJian with Fang Feng Tang Jia Jian (Saposhnikovia Decoctionwith Additions & Subtractions): Fang Feng (RadixSaposhnikoviae) and Ge Gen (Radix Puerariae), 12g each,Qin Jiao (Radix Gentianae Macrophyllae), Wei Ling Xian(Radix Clematidis), and Qiang Huo (Radix Et RhizomaNotopterygii), 9g each, Fu Ling (Poria), Dang Gui (RadixAngelicae Sinensis), and Gui Zhi (Ramulus Cinnamomi), 6geach, and Ma Huang (Herba Ephedrae), 3g.ACUPUNCTURE & MOXIBUSTION: Hou Xi (SI 3), Feng Chi(GB 20), Da Zhui (GV 14), Lie Que (Lu 7)ANALYSIS OF FORMULA: Hou Xi is the meeting point of thegoverning vessel which penetrates the cervical vertebrae. It isone of the best points for treating neck stiffness and/or painwhen needled with draining technique. Draining Lie Que,Da Zhui, and Feng Chi dispels wind and scatters cold. Inaddition, Lie Que is the master or ruling point of the headand neck area, Da Zhui is the intersection point of the sixyang channels and the governing vessel, while Feng Chi is theintersection point of the gallbladder and triple burner channelsand the yang qiao mai and yang wei mai. Therefore, when all these points are needled together, they free the flowof the channels to stop pain in the affected area.ADDITIONS & SUBTRACTIONS: If wind damp is predominant, subtract Lie Que and Da Zhui and add Yin Ling Quan(Sp 9) and Da Zhu (Bl 11). For neck pain along the distributionof the foot tai yang channel, subtract Feng Chi whileadding Tian Zhu (Bl 10) and Kun Lun (Bl 60). If the pain isalong the hand yang ming channel, add Shou San Li (LI 10).If located along the hand tai yang channel, add Tian Zong (SI11) and Qu Yuan (SI 13). If located along the course of thehand shao yang channel, add Tian Liao (TB 15) and/or TianYou (TB 16) and replace Lie Que with Zhong Zhu (TB 3). Iflocated along the governing vessel, add Ya Men (GV 15) andFeng Fu (GV 16). For pain causing avoidance of backwardbending of the neck, add Chen Jiang (CV 24). For pain causingavoidance of forward bending of the head, add Shui Gou(GV 26). For pain that involves the shoulders, add Tian Liao(TB 15) and Jian Yu (LI 15) or the “three shoulder needles,”i.e., Jian Yu (LI 15), Jian Liao (TB 14), and Jian Zhen (SI 9).For pain which simultaneously involves the neck, the trapeziusmuscle, and the scapula, one can use the following strategy:First, needle the “five heavens,” i.e., Tian Zhu (Bl 10),Tian You (TB 16), Tian Jing (GB 21), Tian Liao (TB 15) andTian Zong (SI 11), locally. Secondly, choose 1-3 distantpoints depending on the location of the pain. If the pain islocated on the governing vessel, choose Hou Xi (SI 3) orChang Jiang (GV 1). If on the bladder channel, use Kun Lun(Bl 60) or Shen Mai (Bl 62). If it is on the gallbladder channel, choose Qiu Xu (GB 40) or Xuan Zhong (GB 39). If it ison the small intestine channel, needle Hou Xi (SI 3) or YangLao (SI 6). If it is on the triple burner channel, use ZhongZhu (TB 3) or Zhi Gou (TB 6). This seemingly simple strategyachieves good results for this kind of pain.2.
