MIGRAINE HEADACHES 369Chrysanthemum Drink): Xia Ku Cao (Spica P<strong>ru</strong>nellae), GouTeng (Ramulus Uncariae Cum Uncis), and Zhen Zhu Mu(Concha Margaritiferae), 30g each, Huang Qin (RadixScutellariae), Ju Hua (Flos Chrysanthemi), Tian Ma (RhizomaGastrodiae), Bai Zhi (Radix Angelicae Dahuricae), ChuanXiong (Rhizoma Chuanxiong), Dan Pi (Cortex Moutan), andZhi Zi (F<strong>ru</strong>ctus Gardeniae), 12 grams each, and Di Long(Pheretima) and Quan Xie (Scorpio), 9 grams each. In thiscase, for nausea, add 12 grams each <strong>of</strong> Dai Zhe Shi(Haemititum) and Zhu Ru (Caulis Bambusae In Taeniis). Forphlegm, add nine grams each <strong>of</strong> Ban Xia (Rhizoma Pinelliae)and bile-processed Dan Nan Xing (Rhizoma Arisaematis). Forenduring pain entering the network vessels, add 12 grams each<strong>of</strong> Tao Ren (Semen Persicae) and Chi Shao (Radix PaeoniaeRubrae). For constipation, add 6-9 grams <strong>of</strong> Da Huang (RadixEt Rhizoma Rhei).ACUPUNCTURE & MOXIBUSTION: Xing Jian (Liv 2), Tai Xi(Ki 3), local points according to the location <strong>of</strong> pain, distantpoints according to the affected channel. Local points are thesame as for pattern #1 above. However, prick to bleed anyhot or painful channel or a shi points. Distant points are thesame as for pattern #1 above.ANALYSIS OF FORMULA: Xing Jian is the fire point on theliver channel. Draining it clears and levels the liver and subduesyang. Supplementing Tai Xi nourishes yin to checkyang. Once the frequency <strong>of</strong> attacks is decreased, one shouldpay less attention to the local treatment <strong>of</strong> pain and pay moreattention to nourishing liver-kidney yin.
