Tao Ren and HongHua quicken the blood and also somewhat supplement it. Thusthey attack stasis but without damaging the blood. Chuan ShanJia quickens the blood and has a tropism for the chest andbreast region. Ru Xiang and Mo Yao quicken the blood, free theflow <strong>of</strong> the network vessels, and stop pain. Chuan Xiong movesthe qi within the blood. Thus it also quickens the blood andstops pain. Chai Hu and Tian Hua Fen move the qi and loosenthe chest. Tian Hua Fen also transforms phlegm and clearsheat. Processed Da Huang quickens the blood and dischargesdead blood via the stools, and Gan Cao harmonizes all the otheringredients in the formula, in particular preventing Da Huangfrom damaging the spleen and stomach.ADDITIONS & SUBTRACTIONS: If the onset <strong>of</strong> this condition isdue to a respiratory tract infection with red throat, cough, lowgradefever, and a red tongue, add 30 grams <strong>of</strong> Jin Yin Hua(Flos Lonicerae) and 15 grams <strong>of</strong> Lian Qiao (F<strong>ru</strong>ctusForsythiae). If the disease course is relatively long and there isyin vacuity internal heat with heat in the hands, feet, and heart,vexation and agitation, dry throat, a crimson red tongue withscanty fur, and a fine pulse, add 15 grams each <strong>of</strong> Bei Sha Shen(Radix Glehniae), Mai Men Dong (Tuber Ophiopogonis), andSheng Di (uncooked Radix Rehmanniae). If the disease courseis relatively long and there is qi vacuity with blood stasis manifestby bodily fatigue, lack <strong>of</strong> strength, heart fluster, shortness<strong>of</strong> breath, a pale red tongue with thin, white fur, and a fine,weak pulse, remove the Da Huang and Tian Hua Fen and add30 grams each <strong>of</strong> Dang Shen (Radix Codonopsitis) and HuangQi (Radix Astragali).ACUPUNCTURE & MOXIBUSTION: Tai Chong (Liv 3), He Gu(LI 4), Zhang Men (Liv 13), Dan Zhong (CV 17), Xue Hai(Sp 10); also needle Wai Guan (TB 5) and Yang Ling Quan(GB 34) on the affected sideANALYSIS OF FORMULA: Tai Chong and He Gu free the flow <strong>of</strong>the qi mechanism <strong>of</strong> the entire body, while He Gu and XueHai quicken the blood and dispel stasis. Zhang Men, DanZhong, Wai Guan, and Yang Ling Quan free the flow <strong>of</strong> thechannels and network vessels <strong>of</strong> the chest.ADDITIONS & SUBTRACTIONS: If there is depressive heat, addXing Jian (Liv 2) or needle Tai Chong through to Xing Jian.If there is concomitant spleen vacuity, add Zu San Li (St 36).If there is concomitant phlegm binding, add Feng Long (St40) and Zhong Wan (CV 12).EXTERNAL TREATMENT: Grind and mix the following ingredients:Mu Gua (F<strong>ru</strong>ctus Chaenomelis), 60g, Da Huang(Radix Et Rhizoma Rhei), 150g, Di Bie Chong/Tu BieChong/Zhe Chong (Eupolyphaga/Steleophaga), 30g, RuXiang (Olibanum), 30g, Mo Yao (Myrrha), 30g, and stir-friedZi Jing Pi (Cortex Kadsurae), 60g. Mix 20 grams <strong>of</strong> thispowder with vinegar into a paste and apply externally to theaffected area once per day.REMARKS:1. Using the above combination <strong>of</strong> internally administeredand externally applied medicinals, Yang Cheng-long andYang Ting say the pain typically disappears in five days andany swollen lumps in 10 days. 12. When this condition is associated with stress and anxiety,one obviously also has to address those causative factors.3. Fungal and bacterial infections can cause this condition inimmune-compromised individuals such as those with AIDS.In such cases, support <strong>of</strong> the righteous qi along with attackingevils is necessary.4.
