Our commitment<br />

Implement responsible s<strong>our</strong>c<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> <strong>our</strong><br />

supply cha<strong>in</strong><br />

<strong>Nestlé</strong>’s Responsible S<strong>our</strong>c<strong>in</strong>g activities work across three<br />

str<strong>and</strong>s –<br />

• Farmer Connect: farmers <strong>and</strong> co-operatives through whom<br />

we buy materials directly;<br />

• Tier 1 suppliers: suppliers with whom we deal directly; <strong>and</strong><br />

• Sub-tier suppliers: who supply <strong>our</strong> suppliers <strong>and</strong> from<br />

whom we do not buy directly.<br />

The <strong>Nestlé</strong> RSG sets out the acceptable means of verification<br />

<strong>and</strong> what constitutes the def<strong>in</strong>ition of ‘Responsibly S<strong>our</strong>ced’.<br />

Our Responsible S<strong>our</strong>c<strong>in</strong>g activities def<strong>in</strong>e <strong>in</strong>gredients aga<strong>in</strong>st<br />

these two benchmarks:<br />

• Responsibly S<strong>our</strong>ced: where places of orig<strong>in</strong> are assessed<br />

aga<strong>in</strong>st <strong>our</strong> RSG requirements <strong>and</strong> found to be compliant,<br />

or corrective action plans are developed (or equivalent<br />

st<strong>and</strong>ards implemented); <strong>and</strong><br />

• Traceable: where <strong>in</strong>gredients we buy are identified back to<br />

their places of orig<strong>in</strong>, such as mill, plantation or farm.<br />

Tier 1 audit<strong>in</strong>g<br />

<strong>Nestlé</strong>’s audit<strong>in</strong>g of Tier 1 suppliers began <strong>in</strong> 2010. The<br />

purpose of the audits is to verify how a material or service is<br />

produced <strong>and</strong> to drive <strong>our</strong> direct suppliers’ cont<strong>in</strong>uous<br />

progress towards full compliance with <strong>our</strong> Supplier Code. All<br />

new suppliers are screened when enter<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>to a bus<strong>in</strong>ess<br />

relationship with <strong>Nestlé</strong>, <strong>and</strong> sign<strong>in</strong>g the code is an <strong>in</strong>tegral<br />

part of <strong>our</strong> m<strong>and</strong>atory vendor approval process.<br />

The process<br />

Suppliers are required to arrange <strong>and</strong> host an ethical audit to<br />

show they are adher<strong>in</strong>g to national <strong>and</strong> <strong>in</strong>ternational laws <strong>and</strong><br />

st<strong>and</strong>ards, <strong>and</strong> the m<strong>in</strong>imum st<strong>and</strong>ards set out <strong>in</strong> <strong>our</strong> Supplier<br />

Code. These take place across all categories (raw, packaged,<br />

etc.) globally.<br />

Audits are carried out by approved <strong>in</strong>dependent verification<br />

firms, us<strong>in</strong>g either the Sedex Members Ethical Trade Audit<br />

(SMETA) 4 Pillars guidel<strong>in</strong>e for most of the production facilities<br />

or the EcoVadis methodology for certa<strong>in</strong> services suppliers.<br />

The topics assessed reflect best practice <strong>in</strong> lab<strong>our</strong> st<strong>and</strong>ards,<br />

health <strong>and</strong> safety, the environment <strong>and</strong> bus<strong>in</strong>ess ethics.<br />

Because of the scale of <strong>our</strong> global operations <strong>and</strong> the vast size<br />

of <strong>our</strong> supply cha<strong>in</strong>s, <strong>our</strong> Responsible S<strong>our</strong>c<strong>in</strong>g activities<br />

cont<strong>in</strong>ue to focus on 12 priority categories: palm oil, soya, sugar,<br />

pulp <strong>and</strong> paper, coffee, cocoa, dairy, fish <strong>and</strong> seafood, shea (to<br />

be replaced by cereals <strong>in</strong> 2016), vanilla, hazelnuts, <strong>and</strong> meat,<br />

poultry <strong>and</strong> eggs.<br />

The audit process<br />

3 Resolution<br />

If any gaps are identified <strong>in</strong><br />

relation to <strong>our</strong> st<strong>and</strong>ards, we<br />

support the supplier to close<br />

these by work<strong>in</strong>g together on<br />

an agreed c<strong>our</strong>se of action.<br />

If a supplier doesn’t improve<br />

its practices with<strong>in</strong> an agreed<br />

timeframe, we remove them<br />

from <strong>our</strong> supply cha<strong>in</strong> <strong>and</strong> look<br />

to establish new partnerships<br />

with other suppliers.<br />

1 Site visit<br />

Site visits take place on a<br />

roll<strong>in</strong>g basis, us<strong>in</strong>g consistent<br />

audit criteria cover<strong>in</strong>g:<br />

• Lab<strong>our</strong> st<strong>and</strong>ards;<br />

• Safety <strong>and</strong> health;<br />

• Environment; <strong>and</strong><br />

• Bus<strong>in</strong>ess <strong>in</strong>tegrity.<br />

2 Report<br />

Follow<strong>in</strong>g a site visit, the<br />

auditor* provides a report for<br />

the supplier <strong>and</strong> for <strong>Nestlé</strong>,<br />

identify<strong>in</strong>g any issues of<br />

non-compliance.<br />
