The <strong>Nestlé</strong> Policy on Environmental Susta<strong>in</strong>ability conta<strong>in</strong>s <strong>our</strong><br />

CEO’s commitment to environmentally susta<strong>in</strong>able bus<strong>in</strong>ess<br />

practices. Orig<strong>in</strong>ally launched <strong>in</strong> 1991, it was reissued <strong>in</strong> 2013<br />

<strong>and</strong> covers <strong>our</strong> product life-cycle approach across the <strong>Nestlé</strong><br />

value cha<strong>in</strong> – from farm to consumer <strong>and</strong> beyond. It identifies<br />

six focus areas: water preservation; natural res<strong>our</strong>ces<br />

efficiency; biodiversity conservation; air emissions reduction;<br />

climate change adaptation; <strong>and</strong> zero waste.<br />

The policy <strong>in</strong>corporates the United Nations Global Compact<br />

(UNGC) environmental pr<strong>in</strong>ciples, which state that bus<strong>in</strong>esses<br />

should: support a precautionary approach to environmental<br />

challenges; undertake <strong>in</strong>itiatives to promote greater<br />

environmental responsibility; <strong>and</strong> enc<strong>our</strong>age the development<br />

<strong>and</strong> diffusion of technologies with a better environmental<br />

performance.<br />

The policy is complemented by more detailed <strong>commitments</strong><br />

on key environmental issues, <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g:<br />

• The <strong>Nestlé</strong> Commitment on Climate Change;<br />

• The <strong>Nestlé</strong> Commitment on Biofuels;<br />

• The <strong>Nestlé</strong> Commitment on Water Stewardship;<br />

• The <strong>Nestlé</strong> Commitment on Natural Capital;<br />

• The <strong>Nestlé</strong> Commitment to reduce food loss <strong>and</strong> waste; <strong>and</strong><br />

• The <strong>Nestlé</strong> Commitment on Deforestation <strong>and</strong> Forest<br />

Stewardship.<br />

Strategic masterplann<strong>in</strong>g<br />

Led by a team of representatives from across the bus<strong>in</strong>ess,<br />

who oversee the implementation of The <strong>Nestlé</strong> Policy on<br />

Environmental Susta<strong>in</strong>ability, improve transparency <strong>and</strong> avoid<br />

duplication of effort, we have updated <strong>our</strong> environmental<br />

susta<strong>in</strong>ability strategic master plan.<br />

In <strong>2015</strong>, we held two strategic masterplann<strong>in</strong>g workshops at<br />

<strong>our</strong> headquarters <strong>in</strong> Vevey to create a roadmap for<br />

implementation through to 2018. Our latest public <strong>commitments</strong><br />

<strong>and</strong> objectives on environmental susta<strong>in</strong>ability for this report<br />

were agreed at these workshops.<br />
