We improved <strong>our</strong> approach to mach<strong>in</strong>ery safety with new<br />
assessment tools dur<strong>in</strong>g 2014, as a response to unacceptably<br />
high numbers of mach<strong>in</strong>ery-related <strong>in</strong>juries. Our Mach<strong>in</strong>ery<br />
Safety programme has been rolled out further <strong>and</strong> several<br />
regional workshops were held <strong>in</strong> <strong>2015</strong> (see map on previous<br />
page), <strong>in</strong> addition to those held earlier <strong>in</strong> 2014. Through these<br />
efforts, we have developed a more comprehensive <strong>and</strong><br />
systematic approach to mach<strong>in</strong>ery safety, <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g mach<strong>in</strong>e<br />
guard<strong>in</strong>g <strong>and</strong> safe methods of <strong>in</strong>tervention. We are also<br />
striv<strong>in</strong>g to strengthen the same <strong>in</strong> new bus<strong>in</strong>ess acquisitions.<br />
Electricity<br />
<strong>Nestlé</strong>’s st<strong>and</strong>ards <strong>in</strong>clude safe work practices necessary for<br />
the practical safeguard<strong>in</strong>g of personnel (<strong>Nestlé</strong>, contractors<br />
<strong>and</strong> the public) dur<strong>in</strong>g the <strong>in</strong>stallation, <strong>in</strong>spection, operation,<br />
ma<strong>in</strong>tenance <strong>and</strong> demolition of electric conductors, electric<br />
equipment, signall<strong>in</strong>g <strong>and</strong> communication conductors <strong>and</strong><br />
equipment, for all <strong>Nestlé</strong> facilities.<br />
Our electrical safety programmes are designed to ma<strong>in</strong>ta<strong>in</strong><br />
a safe <strong>and</strong> reliable electrical system for <strong>our</strong> facilities <strong>and</strong><br />
protect employees <strong>and</strong> the public. We strive to accomplish<br />
these objectives through the follow<strong>in</strong>g key activities:<br />
• Support key Group activities through technical st<strong>and</strong>ards,<br />
guidel<strong>in</strong>es <strong>and</strong> specifications;<br />
• Competence build<strong>in</strong>g by provid<strong>in</strong>g tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g on electrical<br />
eng<strong>in</strong>eer<strong>in</strong>g-related subjects;<br />
• Dissem<strong>in</strong>ation of relevant technical <strong>in</strong>formation to the global<br />
eng<strong>in</strong>eer<strong>in</strong>g community; <strong>and</strong><br />
• Provid<strong>in</strong>g technical support to <strong>our</strong> market <strong>and</strong> factory<br />
eng<strong>in</strong>eer<strong>in</strong>g teams.<br />
We are cont<strong>in</strong>u<strong>in</strong>g the deployment of a third-party electrical<br />
audit programme across <strong>our</strong> factories. The electrical<br />
distribution systems m<strong>and</strong>atory gap audit allows us to identify<br />
<strong>and</strong> m<strong>in</strong>imise the risks of electrical failures, which can lead to<br />
<strong>in</strong>juries, loss of production <strong>and</strong> damage of production<br />
equipment or build<strong>in</strong>gs. It also helps to organise an action plan<br />
for the modernisation of the electrical distribution network <strong>and</strong><br />
provides justification for capital expenditures. At the end of the<br />
audit, a report is created with technical observations <strong>and</strong><br />
deficiencies, <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g critical electrical equipment that is<br />
obsolete <strong>and</strong> a modernisation plan with recommendations for<br />
corrective actions. We plan to assess all <strong>our</strong> factories that are<br />
older than 10 years with<strong>in</strong> the next three years.<br />
Strategic priority 3: health management<br />
Our roadmap recognises that safety <strong>and</strong> health are<br />
fundamentally <strong>in</strong>terconnected. Healthier employees are more<br />
resilient <strong>and</strong> resistant to <strong>in</strong>jury <strong>and</strong> illness. They are also more<br />
engaged, demonstrate higher performance <strong>and</strong> live more<br />
fulfill<strong>in</strong>g lives. We are strengthen<strong>in</strong>g <strong>our</strong> occupational health<br />
programmes by focus<strong>in</strong>g on illness identification, <strong>in</strong>vestigation,<br />
ergonomics, stress, resilience <strong>and</strong> wellness. Responsibility for<br />
lead<strong>in</strong>g the <strong>in</strong>dividual focus areas is shared between the<br />
Human Res<strong>our</strong>ces <strong>and</strong> Safety <strong>and</strong> Health functions.<br />
The <strong>Nestlé</strong> Framework for Employee Health<br />
The new framework comprises three pillars:<br />
• Learn: help<strong>in</strong>g employees enhance their health<br />
knowledge <strong>and</strong> become passionate Nutrition, Health<br />
<strong>and</strong> Wellness ambassadors;<br />
• Feel: help<strong>in</strong>g employees access <strong>in</strong>formation about –<br />
<strong>and</strong> take ownership of – their own health; <strong>and</strong><br />
• Choose: help<strong>in</strong>g employees develop <strong>and</strong> ma<strong>in</strong>ta<strong>in</strong><br />
healthy lifestyles.<br />
It <strong>in</strong>cludes a foundation element of occupational health,<br />
reflect<strong>in</strong>g the need to cont<strong>in</strong>ue enhanc<strong>in</strong>g work<strong>in</strong>g<br />
conditions, protect<strong>in</strong>g <strong>our</strong> people at work <strong>and</strong> ensur<strong>in</strong>g<br />
compliance with company <strong>and</strong> legal requirements.<br />
A global network<strong>in</strong>g group of 67 Health <strong>and</strong><br />
Wellness Champions has been created to promote <strong>and</strong><br />
implement programmes <strong>in</strong> 44 markets, represent<strong>in</strong>g<br />
246 794 of <strong>our</strong> employees.<br />
A new <strong>Nestlé</strong> Framework for Employee Health was approved<br />
<strong>in</strong> <strong>2015</strong>, to help structure <strong>and</strong> focus <strong>our</strong> efforts (see above).<br />
S<strong>in</strong>ce its <strong>in</strong>troduction, <strong>our</strong> markets have started to adapt their<br />
own health strategies to the new pillars <strong>and</strong> foundations<br />
elements. At <strong>our</strong> corporate level, f<strong>our</strong> web meet<strong>in</strong>gs took place<br />
<strong>in</strong> April <strong>and</strong> June, <strong>in</strong>volv<strong>in</strong>g representatives from the markets<br />
to raise awareness on the framework <strong>and</strong> assist <strong>in</strong> the crossfertilisation<br />
of ideas.<br />
Illness <strong>in</strong>vestigation<br />
For <strong>Nestlé</strong>, illness <strong>in</strong>vestigation is about gett<strong>in</strong>g better at<br />
recognis<strong>in</strong>g the impact of work on employee health. We seek<br />
to identify learn<strong>in</strong>gs <strong>and</strong> use the <strong>in</strong>formation to address <strong>and</strong><br />
reduce workplace health risks.<br />
We modified <strong>our</strong> performance management systems to<br />
report work-related illnesses separately from work-related<br />
<strong>in</strong>juries <strong>in</strong> 2013, so we are still on a learn<strong>in</strong>g curve <strong>in</strong> this area.<br />
We are rais<strong>in</strong>g awareness of occupational illnesses throughout<br />
the company <strong>and</strong> work<strong>in</strong>g to strengthen <strong>in</strong>ternal capabilities for<br />
recognition, diagnosis, <strong>in</strong>vestigation <strong>and</strong> report<strong>in</strong>g. We<br />
enc<strong>our</strong>age <strong>our</strong> markets to recognise the impact of health on<br />
work <strong>and</strong> have produced guidance for employees on the<br />
<strong>in</strong>vestigation <strong>and</strong> improved recognition of work-related illnesses.<br />
