believe that three factors are key to the success of their<br />
Vocational Educational Tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g (VET) programme:<br />
• A strong recruitment process to attract motivated students;<br />
• A strong ‘mentor community’ tra<strong>in</strong>ed by Nespresso to<br />
accompany the students; <strong>and</strong><br />
• A strong partnership with the school <strong>and</strong> the teach<strong>in</strong>g staff.<br />
The programme started <strong>in</strong> September 2014, br<strong>in</strong>g<strong>in</strong>g together<br />
13 students who are appo<strong>in</strong>ted to six different Parisian<br />
boutiques where they hold customer service assistant<br />
positions (‘coffee specialists’). It lasts for two years <strong>and</strong><br />
prepares students for a BAC +2 diploma, enabl<strong>in</strong>g them to<br />
apply for customer assistant, salesman or deputy manager<br />
positions <strong>in</strong> retail networks, banks or service companies. In<br />
<strong>2015</strong>, Nespresso employees from HR, Market<strong>in</strong>g <strong>and</strong> Supply<br />
Cha<strong>in</strong> departments also gave lectures at the school, giv<strong>in</strong>g<br />
students the opportunity to better connect theory <strong>and</strong> practice.<br />
Our ice cream factory <strong>in</strong> Namysłów has been provid<strong>in</strong>g VET for<br />
students from the local mechanics school s<strong>in</strong>ce 2008. The<br />
cooperation is based on a regular dialogue with teachers; we<br />
also listen carefully to the needs <strong>and</strong> expectations of <strong>our</strong><br />
apprentices. The programme helps prepare young people for<br />
technical positions, especially as electricians. It assists with<br />
ensur<strong>in</strong>g retention of knowledge <strong>in</strong> <strong>our</strong> bus<strong>in</strong>ess <strong>and</strong> the<br />
susta<strong>in</strong>ability of recruitment needs. Three dedicated tutors<br />
(factory eng<strong>in</strong>eer, ma<strong>in</strong>tenance supervisor <strong>and</strong> mechanic) are<br />
responsible for provid<strong>in</strong>g professional knowledge <strong>and</strong> support,<br />
supervision while at work <strong>and</strong> completion of the<br />
apprenticeship programme. <strong>Nestlé</strong> has also created a<br />
mentor<strong>in</strong>g programme based on regular surveys of<br />
apprentices. In 2014, f<strong>our</strong> third-year vocational school students<br />
received professional tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g.<br />
In March <strong>2015</strong>, <strong>Nestlé</strong> hosted European Parliament member<br />
Danuta Jazłowiecka, Vice-President of the Employment <strong>and</strong><br />
Social Affairs Committee, <strong>and</strong> Bartosz Medyk, Director of<br />
Namysłów Mechanics School. It was a great occasion to<br />
exchange experiences <strong>and</strong> talk about future perspectives for<br />
young people.<br />
New vocational tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g<br />
<strong>in</strong> Spa<strong>in</strong><br />
Through an <strong>in</strong>vestment of EUR 102 million (CHF 122 million),<br />
<strong>our</strong> factory <strong>in</strong> Girona, Spa<strong>in</strong>, will become the largest Nescafé<br />
<strong>in</strong>stant coffee factory <strong>in</strong> Europe. Ensur<strong>in</strong>g a susta<strong>in</strong>able talent<br />
pipel<strong>in</strong>e for it, is a key focus area. <strong>Nestlé</strong> Spa<strong>in</strong> believes that<br />
VET fosters dialogue between corporate <strong>and</strong> educational<br />
<strong>in</strong>stitutions, accelerat<strong>in</strong>g their <strong>in</strong>duction process. It guarantees<br />
the development of professional competencies that match<br />
company needs <strong>and</strong> helps workforce process plann<strong>in</strong>g.<br />
However, Spanish companies have no tradition of <strong>in</strong>tegrat<strong>in</strong>g<br />
dual tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g programmes <strong>in</strong>to their day-to-day activities <strong>and</strong><br />
the legal implementation framework is recent (2012).<br />
Enrolment <strong>in</strong> dual VET programmes <strong>in</strong> Spa<strong>in</strong> was at 1%,<br />
compared with 42% <strong>in</strong> Germany <strong>and</strong> 14% <strong>in</strong> the EU.<br />
In September 2014, <strong>Nestlé</strong> Spa<strong>in</strong>, <strong>in</strong> cooperation with the<br />
vocational school Institut Narcís Xifrà I Masmitjá, launched a<br />
new VET programme at the Girona factory. Sixteen students<br />
were selected <strong>and</strong> divided among f<strong>our</strong> teams, ga<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g practical<br />
experience <strong>and</strong> <strong>in</strong>tegrat<strong>in</strong>g theoretical <strong>in</strong>sights from school.<br />
Each student receives a grant throughout their tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g. In<br />
October 2014, the Councillor for Education of the Generalitat,<br />
Irene Rigau, <strong>and</strong> Laurent Dereux, Market Head of <strong>Nestlé</strong> Spa<strong>in</strong>,<br />
signed a cooperation agreement to promote VET.<br />
I’m very happy that, together with <strong>Nestlé</strong>, we<br />
managed to start a dialogue. After identify<strong>in</strong>g the<br />
needs of both sides <strong>and</strong> after creat<strong>in</strong>g a model for<br />
cooperation, we have worked out a good<br />
apprenticeship programme. The opportunity to learn<br />
<strong>in</strong> real terms is a great asset for any school <strong>and</strong> the<br />
sign of development <strong>in</strong> vocational tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g. Not long<br />
ago, students were tra<strong>in</strong>ed <strong>in</strong> professions which<br />
proved useless on the current lab<strong>our</strong> market. Now,<br />
thanks to <strong>our</strong> cooperation, we are able to create<br />
educational plans that meet real needs.”<br />

Our objective<br />
By 2018 – <strong>Nestlé</strong> will offer 24 000 job opportunities, <strong>and</strong><br />
7000 apprenticeship, <strong>in</strong>ternship or tra<strong>in</strong>eeship positions<br />
across the Americas.<br />
We are transform<strong>in</strong>g the <strong>Nestlé</strong> needs YOUth programme <strong>in</strong>to<br />
a global <strong>in</strong>itiative. It has already been launched <strong>in</strong> the<br />
Americas, where we will offer 24 000 job opportunities <strong>and</strong><br />
7000 apprenticeships, <strong>in</strong>ternships or tra<strong>in</strong>eeships by the end of<br />
2018. We are prepar<strong>in</strong>g similar action plans for Asia, Oceania,<br />
sub-Saharan Africa <strong>and</strong> the Middle East.<br />
