Safety <strong>and</strong> health commendation<br />
for Flowergate factory, Nigeria<br />
Our Flowergate factory was awarded an official commendation<br />
<strong>in</strong> <strong>2015</strong>, from the Occupational Health <strong>and</strong> Safety Unit of the<br />
Public Health Department <strong>in</strong> Nigeria. Part of the M<strong>in</strong>istry of<br />
Health <strong>in</strong> Ogun State, the unit <strong>in</strong>spects all factories <strong>in</strong> the state<br />
on an annual basis <strong>and</strong> promotes susta<strong>in</strong>able health <strong>and</strong> safety<br />
<strong>in</strong> all workplaces.<br />
Dur<strong>in</strong>g the last visit to the Flowergate factory on 14 July<br />
<strong>2015</strong>, remarkable achievements were noted by Government<br />
officials <strong>and</strong> the factory was commended on its high safety <strong>and</strong><br />
health st<strong>and</strong>ards. Areas noted dur<strong>in</strong>g the visit <strong>in</strong>cluded the<br />
various programmes <strong>and</strong> projects implemented dur<strong>in</strong>g the year,<br />
the general work<strong>in</strong>g conditions, the level of tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g <strong>and</strong><br />
awareness of people, personal protective equipment<br />
compliance, the medical facilities on site <strong>and</strong> the level of<br />
emergency preparedness, especially dur<strong>in</strong>g the Ebola outbreak.<br />
Key enablers<br />
Our safety <strong>and</strong> health <strong>in</strong>dicators<br />
As we cont<strong>in</strong>ue on <strong>our</strong> j<strong>our</strong>ney towards ‘zero’, it is becom<strong>in</strong>g<br />
clearer that focus<strong>in</strong>g exclusively on lagg<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>dicators will not<br />
be sufficient to drive desired behavi<strong>our</strong>s <strong>and</strong> could, <strong>in</strong> some<br />
situations, drive the wrong behavi<strong>our</strong>s. We, therefore, need to<br />
transition towards a more balanced approach that <strong>in</strong>corporates<br />
lead<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>dicators that reflect <strong>our</strong> safety <strong>and</strong> health priorities,<br />
<strong>and</strong> focus <strong>our</strong> improvement targets on these <strong>in</strong>dicators.<br />
Therefore, we monitor <strong>our</strong> performance for both lead<strong>in</strong>g<br />
<strong>and</strong> lagg<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>dicators for work-related <strong>in</strong>juries <strong>and</strong> illnesses.<br />
We have a global set of lead<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>dicators. Our global<br />
lead<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>dicators <strong>in</strong>clude:<br />
• Percentage of market management team members tra<strong>in</strong>ed<br />
<strong>in</strong> safety <strong>and</strong> health leadership (<strong>2015</strong>: 66%);<br />
• Number of behavi<strong>our</strong>al feedback sessions per person<br />
(<strong>2015</strong>: 12); <strong>and</strong><br />
• Percentage of mach<strong>in</strong>e l<strong>in</strong>es assessed (<strong>2015</strong>: 94%).<br />
In addition, we enc<strong>our</strong>age each market <strong>and</strong> local units to<br />
supplement the Group’s lead<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>dicators with additional<br />
ones that reflect their own local priorities.<br />
<strong>Nestlé</strong>’s performance aga<strong>in</strong>st each <strong>in</strong>dicator can be<br />

Injury rate performance<br />
We cont<strong>in</strong>ue to push for even higher st<strong>and</strong>ards of<br />
transparency <strong>in</strong> identification <strong>and</strong> report<strong>in</strong>g. We <strong>in</strong>clude all<br />
on-site contractors <strong>in</strong> <strong>our</strong> data for <strong>in</strong>juries <strong>and</strong> illnesses,<br />
regardless of the level of supervision by <strong>Nestlé</strong>. In <strong>2015</strong>, <strong>our</strong><br />
recordable <strong>in</strong>jury rate improved its performance to 2.57. We<br />
witnessed a 17% improvement <strong>in</strong> lost day rate over last year.<br />
Strategic priority 5: safety <strong>and</strong> health<br />
functional capability <strong>and</strong> leadership<br />
Safety <strong>and</strong> health functional capability<br />
We are work<strong>in</strong>g to <strong>in</strong>crease levels of personal ownership for<br />
safety <strong>and</strong> health across <strong>Nestlé</strong>. In the future, success for the<br />
Safety <strong>and</strong> Health function will be less about what it does, <strong>and</strong><br />
more about what it tra<strong>in</strong>s <strong>and</strong> enables others to do. This<br />
success will require different ways of work<strong>in</strong>g <strong>and</strong> exceptional<br />
leadership skills <strong>in</strong> areas like <strong>in</strong>fluenc<strong>in</strong>g, coach<strong>in</strong>g <strong>and</strong><br />
change management.<br />
We are rais<strong>in</strong>g the capability of the safety <strong>and</strong> health<br />
community to enable strong functional leadership. To enhance<br />
the functional capability of <strong>our</strong> safety <strong>and</strong> health managers,<br />
specific topics, such as mach<strong>in</strong>ery safety, ErgoPro were<br />
covered dur<strong>in</strong>g the regional safety <strong>and</strong> health workshops by<br />
extend<strong>in</strong>g the duration of the workshops. A formal talent<br />
management process for safety <strong>and</strong> health professionals exists<br />
across the company.<br />
