Water G4-DMA<br />
As a member of the United Nations Global Compact (UNGC)<br />
<strong>and</strong> the UNGC’s CEO Water M<strong>and</strong>ate, we have committed to<br />
respect the human right to water <strong>and</strong> sanitation. In addition to<br />
<strong>our</strong> own public <strong>commitments</strong>, <strong>in</strong> 2013, <strong>Nestlé</strong> signed the<br />
World Bus<strong>in</strong>ess Council for Susta<strong>in</strong>able Development<br />
(WBCSD) WASH Pledge, which commits companies to<br />
provid<strong>in</strong>g access to safe water, sanitation <strong>and</strong> hygiene at all<br />
workplace premises <strong>in</strong> <strong>our</strong> direct control with<strong>in</strong> three years.<br />
By sign<strong>in</strong>g the Pledge, we reaffirmed <strong>our</strong> will<strong>in</strong>gness to meet<br />
WASH requirements – <strong>and</strong> hope it will enc<strong>our</strong>age others,<br />
along the entire value cha<strong>in</strong>, to do the same. Read more about<br />

Internal governance structure for water stewardship<br />
Water is one of three priority areas for <strong>our</strong> bus<strong>in</strong>ess <strong>and</strong> we<br />
embed responsibility for water stewardship across <strong>our</strong><br />
bus<strong>in</strong>ess units.<br />
An Operations Water Task Force (OWTF) meets monthly to<br />
monitor the implementation of <strong>Nestlé</strong>’s <strong>commitments</strong>. It<br />
reviews progress by analys<strong>in</strong>g performance data <strong>and</strong><br />
identify<strong>in</strong>g corrective actions across the organisation. The<br />
OWTF also monitors the need for potential changes, updates<br />
or additions to <strong>our</strong> <strong>commitments</strong>, by review<strong>in</strong>g external <strong>in</strong>puts<br />
such as scientific developments <strong>and</strong> stakeholder feedback.<br />
In 2014, <strong>our</strong> former Executive Vice-President of Operations,<br />
José Lopez, conducted a review of <strong>our</strong> decision-mak<strong>in</strong>g process<br />
for strategic water issues. Work<strong>in</strong>g with a cross-functional team<br />
<strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g senior employees of <strong>Nestlé</strong> Waters, he recommended<br />
that the <strong>Nestlé</strong> Water Task Force be reconvened, <strong>and</strong> report to<br />
the <strong>Nestlé</strong> <strong>in</strong> Society Board <strong>and</strong> the Executive Board. The Water<br />
Task Force has been monitor<strong>in</strong>g water-related risks, challenges<br />
<strong>and</strong> opportunities on a monthly basis – <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g those raised<br />
by the OWTF; stakeholder conven<strong>in</strong>gs; materiality analysis;<br />
GlobeScan reputation research; consultancies <strong>and</strong> <strong>in</strong>vestors;<br />
<strong>and</strong> social media campaigns – <strong>and</strong> updates the Operations<br />
Susta<strong>in</strong>ability Council on water-related activities. Our activity<br />
aims at ensur<strong>in</strong>g good relations with local stakeholders on<br />
water-related topics <strong>and</strong> develop<strong>in</strong>g community outreach<br />
programmes.<br />
The Operations Susta<strong>in</strong>ability Council <strong>and</strong> the <strong>Nestlé</strong> Water<br />
Task Force are chaired by <strong>our</strong> Executive VP of Operations<br />
Magdi Batato, who replaced José Lopez on his retirement <strong>in</strong><br />
September <strong>2015</strong>. Both these bodies <strong>in</strong>form the <strong>Nestlé</strong> <strong>in</strong><br />
Society Board (chaired by the CEO), which has oversight of all<br />
CSV activities, <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g water, <strong>and</strong> <strong>in</strong>cludes Mr Batato. The<br />
NiS Board <strong>and</strong> Executive Board are both chaired by the CEO<br />
<strong>and</strong>, through these bodies, the Board of Directors are regularly<br />
briefed on water issues.<br />
Mr Batato, along with heads of other corporate functions<br />
<strong>and</strong> markets, <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g <strong>Nestlé</strong> Waters, is responsible for<br />
ensur<strong>in</strong>g we meet <strong>our</strong> <strong>commitments</strong>.<br />
In <strong>2015</strong>, we strengthened <strong>our</strong> governance structure further<br />
by creat<strong>in</strong>g a st<strong>and</strong>alone Corporate Operations Water Unit.<br />
This is <strong>in</strong>tended to give water higher visibility at a functional<br />
level, drive synergies across <strong>our</strong> different bus<strong>in</strong>esses <strong>and</strong> br<strong>in</strong>g<br />
<strong>our</strong> Water Stewardship Master Plan to life, so that <strong>our</strong> actions<br />
mitigate any operational or reputational impacts (see<br />
‘Underst<strong>and</strong><strong>in</strong>g <strong>and</strong> manag<strong>in</strong>g <strong>our</strong> impacts’).<br />
Our policies <strong>and</strong> st<strong>and</strong>ards<br />
Our policies <strong>and</strong> st<strong>and</strong>ards ensure the respect of the human<br />
right to water <strong>and</strong> sanitation, as adopted by the UN General<br />
Assembly <strong>and</strong> the UN Human Rights Council. They are aligned<br />
to the external strategic framework of the UN Global<br />
Compact’s CEO Water M<strong>and</strong>ate, the WBCSD WASH Pledge<br />
<strong>and</strong> the UN Guid<strong>in</strong>g Pr<strong>in</strong>ciples on Bus<strong>in</strong>ess <strong>and</strong> Human Rights.<br />
The <strong>Nestlé</strong> Commitment on Water Stewardship is made<br />
available to the public through <strong>our</strong> website; <strong>in</strong> it, we<br />
acknowledge <strong>our</strong> responsibilities as a major water user <strong>and</strong><br />
<strong>our</strong> approach to water stewardship. The Commitment,<br />
launched <strong>in</strong> 2013, forms an appendix to the <strong>Nestlé</strong> Policy on<br />
Environmental Susta<strong>in</strong>ability, <strong>and</strong> complements the follow<strong>in</strong>g<br />
<strong>in</strong>ternal <strong>commitments</strong>, policies <strong>and</strong> st<strong>and</strong>ards:<br />
• The <strong>Nestlé</strong> Corporate Bus<strong>in</strong>ess Pr<strong>in</strong>ciples;<br />
• The <strong>Nestlé</strong> Supplier Code;<br />
• <strong>Nestlé</strong> Responsible S<strong>our</strong>c<strong>in</strong>g Guidel<strong>in</strong>e;<br />
• <strong>Nestlé</strong> Water Guidel<strong>in</strong>es for Suppliers of Agricultural Raw<br />
Materials;<br />
• <strong>Nestlé</strong> Commitment on Natural Capital; <strong>and</strong><br />
• <strong>Nestlé</strong> Commitment on Rural Development.<br />
In <strong>2015</strong>, we f<strong>in</strong>alised the <strong>Nestlé</strong> Guidel<strong>in</strong>es on Respect<strong>in</strong>g<br />
the Human Right to Water <strong>and</strong> Sanitation. Based on guidance<br />
from the CEO Water M<strong>and</strong>ate, this new document provides<br />
consistent directives on how <strong>Nestlé</strong> markets <strong>and</strong> factories can<br />
respect <strong>and</strong> support the human right to water <strong>and</strong> sanitation<br />
across the supply cha<strong>in</strong>.<br />
