Waste <strong>and</strong> recovery<br />

In a world fac<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>creas<strong>in</strong>g constra<strong>in</strong>ts on natural res<strong>our</strong>ces, <strong>our</strong> long-term goal is simple but ambitious: zero<br />

waste for disposal. We’re mak<strong>in</strong>g progress aga<strong>in</strong>st a number of <strong>in</strong>terim targets by prevent<strong>in</strong>g <strong>and</strong> m<strong>in</strong>imis<strong>in</strong>g the<br />

waste we generate <strong>in</strong> the first place, by avoid<strong>in</strong>g food wastage <strong>and</strong> improv<strong>in</strong>g res<strong>our</strong>ce efficiency along the value<br />

cha<strong>in</strong>. Where possible, we also look to reuse materials <strong>and</strong> create value from them – through energy recovery or<br />

creat<strong>in</strong>g new uses for by-products.<br />

Towards zero waste for disposal<br />

Our commitment<br />

Improve res<strong>our</strong>ce efficiency <strong>in</strong> <strong>our</strong> operations<br />

Our objectives<br />

By <strong>2015</strong> – Achieve zero waste for disposal <strong>in</strong> 10% of<br />

<strong>our</strong> factories.<br />

By 2016 – Achieve zero waste for disposal <strong>in</strong> <strong>our</strong> sites.<br />

Our approach<br />

The <strong>Nestlé</strong> Policy on Environmental Susta<strong>in</strong>ability states that<br />

‘specific to <strong>our</strong> food <strong>and</strong> beverage bus<strong>in</strong>ess…we focus on<br />

zero waste’. Through the application of <strong>Nestlé</strong> Cont<strong>in</strong>uous<br />

Excellence (NCE) <strong>in</strong>itiatives, we look to improve res<strong>our</strong>ce<br />

efficiency, quality <strong>and</strong> productivity <strong>in</strong> <strong>our</strong> operations: do<strong>in</strong>g<br />

more with fewer res<strong>our</strong>ces <strong>and</strong> less waste.<br />

Waste for disposal<br />

In <strong>2015</strong>, <strong>Nestlé</strong> reduced waste for disposal by 28% <strong>and</strong>,<br />

s<strong>in</strong>ce 2005, we have reduced total waste for disposal by 62%<br />

to 165 000 tonnes, <strong>and</strong> disposal per tonne of product by 75%.<br />

Only 1% of the waste we generate – such as detergents, oils,<br />

fuels <strong>and</strong> grease – is classified as hazardous, which is<br />

managed <strong>and</strong> disposed of <strong>in</strong> accordance with local regulations<br />

<strong>and</strong> st<strong>and</strong>ards worldwide. Of the waste we disposed of, 91%<br />

went to l<strong>and</strong>fill, 4% to <strong>in</strong>c<strong>in</strong>eration without energy recovery<br />

<strong>and</strong> 5% to other methods of disposal.<br />

Waste for disposal is def<strong>in</strong>ed as any material that leaves a<br />

<strong>Nestlé</strong>-managed location <strong>and</strong> is dest<strong>in</strong>ed for f<strong>in</strong>al disposal with<br />

no economic or ecological value. It <strong>in</strong>cludes l<strong>and</strong>fill<strong>in</strong>g <strong>and</strong><br />

<strong>in</strong>c<strong>in</strong>eration without energy recovery.<br />

Us<strong>in</strong>g best practice from those markets where we do have<br />

sites with zero waste for disposal, we have developed a Zero<br />

Waste for Disposal Guidel<strong>in</strong>e. This guidel<strong>in</strong>e helps sites:<br />

• Underst<strong>and</strong> the challenges faced by some <strong>Nestlé</strong> sites <strong>in</strong><br />

their j<strong>our</strong>ney towards zero waste for disposal;<br />

• Discover the recycl<strong>in</strong>g, recovery <strong>and</strong> reuse dest<strong>in</strong>ations of<br />

different materials such as coffee grounds, tea leaves <strong>and</strong><br />

coffee capsules;<br />

• Compare the economic costs <strong>and</strong> benefits of achiev<strong>in</strong>g zero<br />

waste for disposal; <strong>and</strong><br />

• Share tools <strong>and</strong> examples of best practice implemented<br />

across <strong>Nestlé</strong> to help all <strong>our</strong> sites prevent, reuse <strong>and</strong> recover<br />

waste for disposal <strong>and</strong> by-products.<br />

Our overall ambition is to work towards the po<strong>in</strong>t where no<br />

materials generated <strong>in</strong> any <strong>Nestlé</strong>-managed site go to l<strong>and</strong>fill or<br />

are <strong>in</strong>c<strong>in</strong>erated without energy be<strong>in</strong>g recovered. At the end of<br />

<strong>2015</strong>, 105 <strong>Nestlé</strong> factories (22%) achieved zero waste for disposal.<br />
