NGOs<br />

Through <strong>our</strong> annual stakeholder meet<strong>in</strong>gs, we seek<br />

constructive dialogue with a variety of NGOs <strong>and</strong> <strong>in</strong>terest<br />

groups on the topic of maternal, <strong>in</strong>fant <strong>and</strong> young child<br />

nutrition.<br />

We also aim to work constructively with concerned<br />

stakeholders. We are hopeful that a fact-based <strong>and</strong><br />

constructive dialogue, which keeps the health of children at<br />

the centre of the discussion, will help us achieve <strong>our</strong> goal of<br />

contribut<strong>in</strong>g to the optimal health <strong>and</strong> nutrition of mothers,<br />

<strong>in</strong>fants <strong>and</strong> young children.<br />

Participation <strong>in</strong> <strong>in</strong>dustry associations<br />

<strong>Nestlé</strong> is a member of different national <strong>and</strong> regional <strong>in</strong>dustry<br />

associations around the world dedicated to specialised<br />

nutrition <strong>in</strong> the countries where they operate. Some of these<br />

associations are members of the International Special Dietary<br />

Foods Industries (ISDI), which promotes high st<strong>and</strong>ards <strong>in</strong> the<br />

production <strong>and</strong> trade of special dietary foods. We have been<br />

active <strong>in</strong> ISDI s<strong>in</strong>ce its foundation.<br />

Governments <strong>and</strong> <strong>in</strong>ternational organisations<br />

We work with national <strong>and</strong> <strong>in</strong>ternational health organisations<br />

that support the aim <strong>and</strong> pr<strong>in</strong>ciples of the WHO Code. We also<br />

collaborate <strong>in</strong> the development of robust <strong>and</strong> widely accepted<br />

methodologies that will <strong>in</strong>dependently <strong>and</strong> transparently<br />

assess the market<strong>in</strong>g practices of BMS manufacturers.<br />

We aim to:<br />

• Enc<strong>our</strong>age detailed R&D <strong>in</strong>to <strong>in</strong>fant <strong>and</strong> young child<br />

nutrition;<br />

• Help <strong>in</strong>crease public awareness of sound <strong>in</strong>fant feed<strong>in</strong>g<br />

practices;<br />

• Promote balanced legislation <strong>and</strong> science-based regulation<br />

at national, regional <strong>and</strong> <strong>in</strong>ternational level; <strong>and</strong><br />

• Provide constructive comments to further improve <strong>and</strong> align<br />

methodologies to assess BMS market<strong>in</strong>g practices.<br />

Cont<strong>in</strong>uous improvement<br />

In recent years, we have focused on improvement <strong>in</strong> the<br />

follow<strong>in</strong>g areas:<br />

• Re<strong>in</strong>forc<strong>in</strong>g <strong>our</strong> policies: <strong>in</strong> l<strong>in</strong>e with the WHO Guid<strong>in</strong>g<br />

pr<strong>in</strong>ciples for feed<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>fants <strong>and</strong> young children dur<strong>in</strong>g<br />

emergencies, we published <strong>our</strong> global Instructions on<br />

Donations <strong>and</strong> Low-cost supplies of Infant Formula <strong>and</strong><br />

Formula for Special Medical Purposes <strong>in</strong>tended for Infants<br />

for use <strong>in</strong> Emergencies, <strong>in</strong> <strong>2015</strong>.<br />

• Strengthen<strong>in</strong>g <strong>our</strong> compliance report<strong>in</strong>g process:<br />

compliance is one of the highest priorities for <strong>our</strong> company,<br />

which is why we’ve strengthened the <strong>in</strong>ternal report<strong>in</strong>g<br />

mechanism between <strong>our</strong> markets <strong>and</strong> the corporate<br />

headquarters. The results of <strong>our</strong> <strong>in</strong>ternal compliance<br />

monitor<strong>in</strong>g are reported annually to <strong>our</strong> Board of Directors.<br />

We have re<strong>in</strong>forced <strong>our</strong> <strong>in</strong>ternal audit mechanisms to ensure<br />

that compliance with the relevant policies <strong>and</strong> guidel<strong>in</strong>es on<br />

the responsible market<strong>in</strong>g of BMS is systematically part of<br />

the verification <strong>and</strong> is reported to <strong>our</strong> headquarters (see<br />

Compliance);<br />

• Remov<strong>in</strong>g br<strong>and</strong>ed cab<strong>in</strong>et displays: s<strong>in</strong>ce 2013, more<br />

than 3600 display cab<strong>in</strong>ets for BMS have either been<br />

removed from the trade or modified to ensure that they<br />

comply with <strong>our</strong> Display Cab<strong>in</strong>ets Guidel<strong>in</strong>es; <strong>and</strong><br />

• Exp<strong>and</strong><strong>in</strong>g tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g of employees: start<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> 2014,<br />

exist<strong>in</strong>g tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>itiatives were further complemented by<br />

the roll-out of the <strong>Nestlé</strong> Nutrition global onl<strong>in</strong>e tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g<br />

programmes, which <strong>in</strong>clude specific modules on the<br />

fundamentals of breastfeed<strong>in</strong>g, the WHO Code, the <strong>Nestlé</strong><br />

Policy <strong>and</strong> the FTSE4Good BMS market<strong>in</strong>g criteria. In <strong>2015</strong>,<br />

we tra<strong>in</strong>ed a further 3090 people, <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g new <strong>Nestlé</strong><br />

Nutrition employees <strong>and</strong> those that were not tra<strong>in</strong>ed dur<strong>in</strong>g<br />

2014 for technical reasons (see Tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g <strong>our</strong> employees).<br />

Responsible market<strong>in</strong>g to children<br />

Our commitment<br />

Our objectives<br />

Ensure responsible market<strong>in</strong>g communication<br />

to children<br />

By <strong>2015</strong> – Implement a strengthened <strong>Nestlé</strong> Market<strong>in</strong>g<br />

Communication to Children Policy.<br />

By 2017 – In support of the implementation of the <strong>Nestlé</strong><br />

Market<strong>in</strong>g Communication to Children Policy, we will roll<br />

out a targeted tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g for <strong>our</strong> market<strong>in</strong>g teams globally.<br />

We def<strong>in</strong>e children’s products as those for which 50% or more<br />

of the consumers are below 12 years old, while those for<br />

teenagers are for consumers below 18 years old. As of<br />

January 2016, <strong>Nestlé</strong> has implemented its revised Policy on<br />

Market<strong>in</strong>g Communication to Children (<strong>Nestlé</strong> Policy). Key<br />

changes <strong>in</strong>clude:<br />

• EU Pledge criteria serve as a global reference;<br />

• No market<strong>in</strong>g to children of biscuits, sugar or chocolate<br />

confectionery;<br />

• Qualitative assessment (creative execution, licensed<br />

characters);<br />

• Sales <strong>in</strong> schools restricted to products meet<strong>in</strong>g the nutrition<br />

criteria; <strong>and</strong><br />

• Affect all channels <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g TV, radio, pr<strong>in</strong>t, social media,<br />

outdoor, contests, promotions, events <strong>and</strong> sampl<strong>in</strong>g.<br />

<strong>Nestlé</strong> has been a firm proponent of responsible market<strong>in</strong>g to<br />

children s<strong>in</strong>ce the launch of its Communication Pr<strong>in</strong>ciples <strong>in</strong><br />

2002, <strong>and</strong> was a found<strong>in</strong>g member of the International Food<br />

<strong>and</strong> Beverage Alliance (IFBA). In 2012, we were <strong>in</strong>strumental <strong>in</strong><br />

the adoption of shared nutritional criteria by EU Pledge<br />

members. In turn, we have used these criteria as the basis for<br />

<strong>our</strong> revised <strong>Nestlé</strong> Policy.<br />
