Us<strong>in</strong>g technology to improve<br />

water treatment <strong>in</strong> Vietnam<br />

Most coffee factories treat waste with chemicals before<br />

transferr<strong>in</strong>g it to a municipal plant. But when <strong>Nestlé</strong> Vietnam<br />

built the Tri An factory <strong>in</strong> September 2012, it wanted a ‘best-<strong>in</strong>class’<br />

facility that would reduce waste <strong>and</strong> <strong>in</strong>crease water reuse.<br />

For the first time <strong>in</strong> a <strong>Nestlé</strong> coffee factory, a biological<br />

aerobic treatment plant with membrane bio-reactors was<br />

constructed. Waste is passed through a specialised ultrafiltration,<br />

hollow fibre membrane, which is so f<strong>in</strong>e that even<br />

bacteria <strong>and</strong> viruses cannot pass through. The rema<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g water<br />

is then treated us<strong>in</strong>g reverse osmosis filtration, mak<strong>in</strong>g it clean<br />

enough to be reused <strong>in</strong> facilities such as cool<strong>in</strong>g towers. This<br />

has reduced the factory’s daily water consumption by over<br />

30% <strong>and</strong> its water discharge by over 50%, sav<strong>in</strong>g 90 000<br />

tonnes of water per year.<br />

We are now analys<strong>in</strong>g whether the factory’s boilers can also<br />

use the treated water, which could save a further 36 000<br />

tonnes of water a year.<br />

Employee tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g on wastewater <strong>and</strong><br />

water quality<br />

Meet<strong>in</strong>g <strong>our</strong> own ambitious targets for discharged water<br />

quality will be a challenge, so tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g <strong>and</strong> awareness-rais<strong>in</strong>g<br />

among <strong>our</strong> employees is a priority. Tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> wastewater<br />

management is an area of particular opportunity for those<br />

employees work<strong>in</strong>g at <strong>our</strong> Waste Water Treatment Plants<br />

(WWTPs), as <strong>our</strong> performance relies on their skill <strong>and</strong><br />

competence.<br />

While some countries, such as France <strong>and</strong> Spa<strong>in</strong>, already<br />

have strong tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g programmes <strong>in</strong> place, we can improve <strong>in</strong><br />

other locations. Therefore, we are develop<strong>in</strong>g a st<strong>and</strong>ard<br />

global tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g programme for the plant operators, technicians<br />

<strong>and</strong> eng<strong>in</strong>eers who run <strong>our</strong> WWTPs. Work<strong>in</strong>g with external<br />

partners to deliver the sessions, we held workshops <strong>in</strong> Nigeria,<br />

Côte d’Ivoire <strong>and</strong> Indonesia dur<strong>in</strong>g <strong>2015</strong>.<br />

To ensure the water we discharge <strong>in</strong>to the environment is<br />

clean, it is vital we have both the <strong>in</strong>frastructure <strong>and</strong> the<br />

knowledge to do so effectively. To help facilitate this, we<br />

<strong>in</strong>stigated water treatment <strong>and</strong> management workshops <strong>in</strong><br />

Nigeria, Indonesia <strong>and</strong> Côte d’Ivoire dur<strong>in</strong>g <strong>2015</strong>.<br />

Our assessments <strong>in</strong> Agbara, Nigeria, <strong>and</strong> Yopougon, Côte<br />

d’Ivoire, <strong>in</strong>dicated that while <strong>our</strong> <strong>in</strong>frastructure was adequate,<br />

performance was sometimes h<strong>in</strong>dered by gaps <strong>in</strong> the tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g<br />

<strong>and</strong> knowledge of <strong>our</strong> staff. In Indonesia, we also identified a<br />

need to manage storm water effectively to avoid<br />

environmental damage <strong>and</strong> flood<strong>in</strong>g.<br />

Collaborat<strong>in</strong>g with tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g provider AQUA MPS <strong>in</strong> Central<br />

West Africa, <strong>and</strong> shar<strong>in</strong>g best practice with <strong>Nestlé</strong> dairy <strong>and</strong><br />

coffee factories <strong>in</strong> Indonesia, we ran a series of workshops<br />

over the c<strong>our</strong>se of the year. These <strong>in</strong>volved a mix of classroom<br />

<strong>and</strong> on-site tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g, as well as <strong>in</strong>spections of the plants <strong>and</strong><br />

their operations. The tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g covered a number of different<br />

treatment processes, <strong>and</strong> gave participants a clearer <strong>and</strong><br />

deeper underst<strong>and</strong><strong>in</strong>g of water quality <strong>and</strong> conservation. In<br />

Indonesia, this was supplemented by <strong>in</strong>formation about the<br />

segregation of wastewater from stormwater networks,<br />

elim<strong>in</strong>at<strong>in</strong>g contam<strong>in</strong>ation <strong>and</strong> flood prevention, to ensure we<br />

are well prepared for adverse weather.<br />

Hav<strong>in</strong>g trialled the <strong>in</strong>itiative, <strong>Nestlé</strong> is now collaborat<strong>in</strong>g<br />

with AQUA MPS to ensure it cont<strong>in</strong>ues <strong>in</strong> a more formal way.<br />

Remote support for each site will be supplemented by one<br />

visit per year, to <strong>in</strong>volve refresher tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g <strong>and</strong> an on-site<br />

<strong>in</strong>spection, as well as web<strong>in</strong>ars <strong>and</strong> newsletters to strengthen<br />

knowledge among the relevant personnel. We have also<br />

identified two managers <strong>in</strong> Nigeria <strong>and</strong> Côte d’Ivoire who will<br />

become <strong>in</strong>-house ‘champions’ of the programme.<br />

In 2016, the programme will be implemented <strong>in</strong> three more<br />

factories <strong>in</strong> Central West Africa: Flowergate (Nigeria), Tema<br />

(Ghana) <strong>and</strong> Abidjan Z4 (Côte d’Ivoire). We will provide<br />

tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g, coach<strong>in</strong>g <strong>and</strong> technical support to ensure <strong>our</strong><br />

operations operate efficiently <strong>and</strong> consistently, analyse<br />

wastewater accurately, <strong>and</strong> comply with all <strong>in</strong>ternal <strong>and</strong><br />

external st<strong>and</strong>ards <strong>and</strong> regulations.<br />

We also conducted Safety, Health <strong>and</strong> Environmental<br />

Susta<strong>in</strong>ability workshops <strong>in</strong> the United States, Germany <strong>and</strong><br />

Vietnam to re<strong>in</strong>force leadership <strong>in</strong> <strong>our</strong> operat<strong>in</strong>g companies<br />

around the world. The wide range of topics addressed<br />

<strong>in</strong>cluded compliance, assess<strong>in</strong>g <strong>and</strong> manag<strong>in</strong>g environmental<br />

impact, <strong>and</strong> feedback on the <strong>Nestlé</strong> Environmental<br />

Requirements (NER).<br />

We also engage with external stakeholders on ways to<br />

improve the use of res<strong>our</strong>ces to protect the environment <strong>and</strong><br />

promote susta<strong>in</strong>ability. For example, <strong>Nestlé</strong>’s Qazv<strong>in</strong> factory <strong>in</strong><br />

Iran organised a two-day Safety, Health <strong>and</strong> Environment<br />

conference <strong>in</strong> December <strong>2015</strong>. The conference sought to raise<br />

awareness on water, as well as on waste management <strong>and</strong><br />

occupational health <strong>and</strong> safety. The participants, <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g<br />

government officials from the M<strong>in</strong>istry of Health <strong>and</strong><br />

Environment Protection Organisation, <strong>and</strong> more than 100<br />

experts from different <strong>in</strong>dustries, also visited <strong>our</strong> on-site<br />

wastewater treatment plant to share best practices.<br />
