Stakeholder engagement<br />

Even when we are mak<strong>in</strong>g progress, we will always need the<br />

advice of the best experts <strong>and</strong> advocates. We use stakeholder<br />

engagement to develop <strong>and</strong> improve <strong>our</strong> corporate policies<br />

<strong>and</strong> <strong>commitments</strong>. It helps us to build <strong>our</strong> bus<strong>in</strong>ess <strong>and</strong> target<br />

<strong>our</strong> societal <strong>in</strong>vestments.<br />

Our annual programme of stakeholder conven<strong>in</strong>gs <strong>and</strong><br />

Creat<strong>in</strong>g <strong>Shared</strong> <strong>Value</strong> events provide an opportunity to<br />

<strong>in</strong>tensify that dialogue, build<strong>in</strong>g on <strong>our</strong> underst<strong>and</strong><strong>in</strong>g of<br />

critical societal issues. The <strong>in</strong>teraction develops the capability<br />

of <strong>our</strong> people, facilitat<strong>in</strong>g more effective collective action.<br />

Our stakeholder conven<strong>in</strong>gs aim to promote <strong>in</strong>creased levels<br />

of trust <strong>and</strong> mutual respect.<br />

Our bus<strong>in</strong>esses engage with stakeholders at a country level.<br />

Outcomes are fed back to senior management through the<br />

<strong>Nestlé</strong> <strong>in</strong> <strong>society</strong> Board.<br />

Our stakeholder groups<br />

Our global stakeholder network is vast, rang<strong>in</strong>g from people<br />

we engage with regularly through <strong>our</strong> operations to those <strong>in</strong><br />

public positions who <strong>in</strong>fluence <strong>our</strong> activities.<br />

<strong>Nestlé</strong> identifies the follow<strong>in</strong>g groups as fundamental to <strong>our</strong><br />

cont<strong>in</strong>u<strong>in</strong>g bus<strong>in</strong>ess success:<br />

• Communities;<br />

• Consumers <strong>and</strong> the general public;<br />

• Customers;<br />

• Employees <strong>and</strong> their representatives;<br />

Stakeholder conven<strong>in</strong>gs<br />

<strong>Nestlé</strong> stakeholder conven<strong>in</strong>gs are hosted <strong>and</strong> organised by<br />

external experts. They ensure we receive <strong>in</strong>dependent<br />

op<strong>in</strong>ions <strong>and</strong> feedback, which is critical. These events address<br />

issues that are specific to <strong>our</strong> value cha<strong>in</strong> <strong>and</strong> focus areas <strong>in</strong><br />

which <strong>Nestlé</strong> can create shared value.<br />

In <strong>2015</strong>, we held stakeholder conven<strong>in</strong>gs <strong>in</strong> London <strong>in</strong><br />

March (50 stakeholders) <strong>and</strong> Wash<strong>in</strong>gton DC <strong>in</strong> December<br />

(61 stakeholders), which were attended by representatives of<br />

NGOs, academia, government <strong>and</strong> <strong>in</strong>ternational organisations.<br />

London stakeholder conven<strong>in</strong>g,<br />

17–18 March <strong>2015</strong>:<br />

This stakeholder conven<strong>in</strong>g was the f<strong>our</strong>th to be held <strong>in</strong> London<br />

s<strong>in</strong>ce their <strong>in</strong>ception <strong>in</strong> 2007. It was attended by 50 stakeholders<br />

as well as <strong>Nestlé</strong> S.A. Chief Executive Officer Paul Bulcke,<br />

<strong>Nestlé</strong> senior executives <strong>and</strong> experts from headquarters.<br />

There was significant <strong>in</strong>terest <strong>in</strong> the role that <strong>Nestlé</strong> could<br />

play <strong>in</strong> lead<strong>in</strong>g systems level change on CSV issues.<br />

Participants called on <strong>Nestlé</strong> to play a bigger, bolder role <strong>and</strong><br />

to set a clear, longer-term vision for what the company is<br />

aim<strong>in</strong>g to achieve.<br />

Wash<strong>in</strong>gton stakeholder conven<strong>in</strong>g,<br />

7–8 December <strong>2015</strong>:<br />

This was <strong>Nestlé</strong>’s second stakeholder conven<strong>in</strong>g to be held<br />

<strong>in</strong> Wash<strong>in</strong>gton DC. The conven<strong>in</strong>g provided <strong>Nestlé</strong> with an<br />

opportunity to share progress on its CSV programmes <strong>and</strong><br />

<strong>commitments</strong>. This <strong>in</strong>cluded <strong>Nestlé</strong>’s CSV work <strong>in</strong> the USA<br />

<strong>and</strong> priorities <strong>in</strong> the Zone Americas. The event was attended<br />

by 61 stakeholders <strong>and</strong> by Laurent Freixe, Executive Vice<br />

President of <strong>Nestlé</strong> S.A. <strong>and</strong> Head of Zone Americas, as well as<br />

other <strong>Nestlé</strong> senior executives <strong>and</strong> experts from headquarters.<br />

Creat<strong>in</strong>g <strong>Shared</strong> <strong>Value</strong> Forum<br />

The 2014 Creat<strong>in</strong>g <strong>Shared</strong> <strong>Value</strong> Forum <strong>in</strong> Lausanne, Switzerl<strong>and</strong>,<br />

explored how bus<strong>in</strong>ess can create long-term value to accelerate<br />

susta<strong>in</strong>able development.<br />
