Vanilla<br />
Madagascar is one of the world’s lead<strong>in</strong>g producers of<br />
vanilla, <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g the 700 tonnes of natural vanilla flav<strong>our</strong><br />
<strong>Nestlé</strong> purchased <strong>in</strong> <strong>2015</strong> for <strong>our</strong> ice cream <strong>and</strong><br />
confectionery products.<br />
The vanilla spice comes ma<strong>in</strong>ly from the Sambava,<br />
Antalaha, Vohemar <strong>and</strong> Andap (SAVA) regions, where it is<br />
produced by small growers <strong>in</strong> rural, sometimes remote,<br />
villages, where social <strong>and</strong> educational <strong>in</strong>frastructures are<br />
underdeveloped.<br />
Because there are no bees on Madagascar, each orchid<br />
flower has to be poll<strong>in</strong>ated by h<strong>and</strong>. In addition, each flower<br />
lasts for only one day so has to be poll<strong>in</strong>ated immediately,<br />
mean<strong>in</strong>g crops must be checked daily. Comb<strong>in</strong>ed with harvest<br />
<strong>and</strong> cur<strong>in</strong>g, this makes vanilla a lab<strong>our</strong>-<strong>in</strong>tensive <strong>and</strong> timeconsum<strong>in</strong>g<br />
crop to grow <strong>in</strong> Madagascar, mak<strong>in</strong>g it best suited<br />
to small-scale farms.<br />
Low <strong>in</strong>come can also be a major factor <strong>in</strong> the vanilla supply<br />
cha<strong>in</strong>. Most of <strong>Nestlé</strong>’s vanilla supplies come from Madagascar,<br />
where about 80 000 farmers rely almost exclusively on vanilla<br />
for their <strong>in</strong>come. Sometimes, farmers harvest their vanilla too<br />
early because they need cash to buy food, or because of a lack<br />
of access to res<strong>our</strong>ces <strong>and</strong> expertise.<br />
Tackl<strong>in</strong>g child lab<strong>our</strong> <strong>in</strong> the vanilla supply cha<strong>in</strong><br />
While child lab<strong>our</strong> rema<strong>in</strong>s an issue <strong>in</strong> a number of <strong>our</strong> priority<br />
categories’ supply cha<strong>in</strong>s, we have a particular objective to<br />
work towards elim<strong>in</strong>at<strong>in</strong>g it from <strong>our</strong> vanilla supply cha<strong>in</strong>. In<br />
<strong>2015</strong>, we cont<strong>in</strong>ued to work towards this <strong>in</strong> various ways,<br />
<strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g work<strong>in</strong>g with <strong>our</strong> supplier Givaudan, which has<br />
extended <strong>and</strong> improved access to educational facilities for<br />
farmers’ children. Givaudan is now work<strong>in</strong>g to develop child<br />
lab<strong>our</strong> remediation activities, <strong>and</strong> we are beg<strong>in</strong>n<strong>in</strong>g work with a<br />
second supplier to help take more children out of farm lab<strong>our</strong>.<br />
Traceability <strong>in</strong> the supply cha<strong>in</strong><br />
Given their importance to global supplies, vanilla farmers <strong>in</strong><br />
Madagascar need to have both susta<strong>in</strong>able res<strong>our</strong>ces <strong>and</strong> the<br />
necessary education <strong>and</strong> skills to produce high-quality,<br />
high-value crops.<br />
Although we don’t have category-specific requirements for<br />
natural vanilla flav<strong>our</strong>, <strong>our</strong> RSG requirements cover compliance<br />
with local <strong>and</strong> national regulations <strong>and</strong> laws, lab<strong>our</strong> practices,<br />
environmental impacts <strong>and</strong> the creation of shared value.<br />
After carry<strong>in</strong>g out an <strong>in</strong>-depth field <strong>in</strong>vestigation to evaluate<br />
the responsible s<strong>our</strong>c<strong>in</strong>g risks <strong>and</strong> opportunities <strong>in</strong> <strong>our</strong><br />
Malagasy vanilla supply cha<strong>in</strong>, we created <strong>our</strong> Responsible<br />
S<strong>our</strong>c<strong>in</strong>g strategy for the category. It seeks to establish<br />
traceability through the complex supply cha<strong>in</strong> of exporters,<br />
processors <strong>and</strong> collectors back to the gardens or plantations,<br />
<strong>and</strong> seeks to ensure Responsibly S<strong>our</strong>ced vanilla volume<br />
through the implementation of best practices.<br />

To date, <strong>our</strong> Tier 1 supplier Givaudan has benefited 3337<br />
schoolchildren <strong>and</strong> supported almost 2200 families through its<br />
susta<strong>in</strong>able development programme for 2013–<strong>2015</strong>. Givaudan<br />
<strong>and</strong> one of its suppliers, Henri Fraise Fils, have achieved this by:<br />
• Improv<strong>in</strong>g vanilla bean quality through the provision of<br />
technical assistance to farmers;<br />
• Promot<strong>in</strong>g the System of Rice Intensification to <strong>in</strong>crease the<br />
yield of locally grown, pesticide-free rice, strengthen<strong>in</strong>g<br />
food security;<br />
• Support<strong>in</strong>g the development of alternative s<strong>our</strong>ces of<br />
revenue, such as beekeep<strong>in</strong>g, fisheries, keep<strong>in</strong>g small<br />
livestock <strong>and</strong> h<strong>and</strong>icrafts;<br />
• Improv<strong>in</strong>g access to water by build<strong>in</strong>g wells <strong>and</strong> irrigation<br />
dams; <strong>and</strong><br />
• Support<strong>in</strong>g the build<strong>in</strong>g, extension <strong>and</strong> repair of schools,<br />
health centres <strong>and</strong> access roads.<br />
In <strong>2015</strong>, Givaudan commenced remediation activities with the<br />
co-operatives established through the Community Vanilla<br />
Initiative <strong>and</strong> previously audited. This work will further develop<br />
the traceability, quality <strong>and</strong> availability of vanilla <strong>and</strong> build a<br />
susta<strong>in</strong>able partnership with the farmers.<br />
In addition, <strong>Nestlé</strong> directed res<strong>our</strong>ces <strong>and</strong> fund<strong>in</strong>g to<br />
sponsor the build<strong>in</strong>g of two additional schools close to <strong>our</strong><br />
s<strong>our</strong>c<strong>in</strong>g locations, <strong>and</strong> support the development of<br />
<strong>in</strong>frastructure for a health centre. We will also make a video<br />
film of <strong>our</strong> vanilla s<strong>our</strong>c<strong>in</strong>g activities to better educate both<br />
employees <strong>and</strong> consumers.<br />
