Putt<strong>in</strong>g the <strong>Nestlé</strong> Cocoa Plan<br />

<strong>in</strong>to practice <strong>in</strong> Côte d’Ivoire<br />

Côte d’Ivoire’s cocoa sector faces numerous challenges.<br />

<strong>Nestlé</strong>, <strong>in</strong> partnership with the FLA <strong>and</strong> other organisations, is<br />

work<strong>in</strong>g closely with cocoa co-operatives to tackle these<br />

issues. One such co-operative is USCRG, compris<strong>in</strong>g 895<br />

farmers <strong>in</strong> the Gôh region. Our work with them focuses on the<br />

three pillars of the <strong>Nestlé</strong> Cocoa Plan – improved profitability<br />

for farmers, improved social conditions <strong>and</strong> improved s<strong>our</strong>c<strong>in</strong>g.<br />

Many of the co-operative’s farms are age<strong>in</strong>g so, <strong>in</strong> 2010, we<br />

created a nursery to grow new, high-yield<strong>in</strong>g plants. Around<br />

30 000 plants are distributed free of charge to farms each year<br />

<strong>and</strong>, once matured, are expected to improve yields<br />

significantly, perhaps by more than double, boost<strong>in</strong>g farmers’<br />

<strong>in</strong>comes. To support this, we tra<strong>in</strong> farmers <strong>in</strong> good agricultural<br />

practices, such as farm ma<strong>in</strong>tenance <strong>and</strong> harvest techniques.<br />

Farms are audited <strong>in</strong>dependently <strong>and</strong> farmers implement<strong>in</strong>g<br />

good practices receive certification. Subsequent annual<br />

<strong>in</strong>spections <strong>and</strong> <strong>in</strong>centives promote cont<strong>in</strong>ual improvement.<br />

Improv<strong>in</strong>g social conditions – <strong>in</strong> particular address<strong>in</strong>g child<br />

lab<strong>our</strong> <strong>and</strong> women’s empowerment – is a key element of<br />

achiev<strong>in</strong>g better lives. We have <strong>in</strong>stalled <strong>our</strong> Child Lab<strong>our</strong><br />

Monitor<strong>in</strong>g <strong>and</strong> Remediation System (CLMRS) <strong>in</strong> the<br />

co-operative, <strong>and</strong> work with farmers to raise awareness of<br />

the issues. We help children <strong>in</strong> need, for example by provid<strong>in</strong>g<br />

school kits <strong>and</strong>, s<strong>in</strong>ce 2012, we have built or refurbished eight<br />

schools <strong>in</strong> the USCRG area.<br />

<strong>Nestlé</strong> also supports women to develop their own <strong>in</strong>comes<br />

by grow<strong>in</strong>g crops such as cassava, banana planta<strong>in</strong> <strong>and</strong><br />

vegetables. Through the community-led Gender Action<br />

Learn<strong>in</strong>g for Susta<strong>in</strong>ability methodology, we are help<strong>in</strong>g<br />

community members make <strong>in</strong>dividual action plans, <strong>and</strong><br />

provid<strong>in</strong>g opportunities for women to have their voices heard.<br />

Together with the International Federation of Red Cross <strong>and</strong><br />

Red Crescent Societies (IFRC), <strong>Nestlé</strong> is also support<strong>in</strong>g<br />

hygiene improvement, such as rehabilitat<strong>in</strong>g water pumps <strong>and</strong><br />

build<strong>in</strong>g sanitary facilities. Currently, 23 villages have hygiene<br />

or sanitation programmes <strong>in</strong> place.<br />

We work with the co-operative <strong>in</strong> help<strong>in</strong>g them to set their<br />

plans for the next three years. What is important is that the<br />

co-operative decides for itself what it wants to do, rather than<br />

hav<strong>in</strong>g it imposed from outside. With a significant <strong>in</strong>vestment,<br />

both f<strong>in</strong>ancially <strong>and</strong> <strong>in</strong> res<strong>our</strong>ces, the work at USCRG is already<br />

demonstrat<strong>in</strong>g real benefits, both for the farmers <strong>and</strong> their<br />

families, <strong>and</strong> <strong>in</strong> secur<strong>in</strong>g a susta<strong>in</strong>able supply cha<strong>in</strong>.<br />

Invest<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> plant <strong>and</strong> soil research<br />

Activities such as agronomic research <strong>in</strong>to soil fertility, plant<br />

nutrition <strong>and</strong> the improvement of farm<strong>in</strong>g systems, together<br />

with the distribution of cocoa plants, are major factors <strong>in</strong><br />

enabl<strong>in</strong>g cocoa farmers to grow more <strong>and</strong> higher-quality crops<br />

over the long term <strong>and</strong> thus improve their <strong>in</strong>come. <strong>Nestlé</strong><br />

cont<strong>in</strong>ued to run <strong>our</strong> 30 hectare experimental <strong>and</strong><br />

demonstration farm at Zambakro, Côte d’Ivoire, <strong>in</strong> <strong>2015</strong>, which<br />

serves as a farmer tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g academy <strong>and</strong> a plant research <strong>and</strong><br />

propagation centre. In addition, we propagated <strong>and</strong> distributed<br />

1.7 million plants <strong>in</strong> Côte d’Ivoire.<br />

Build<strong>in</strong>g schools<br />

Build<strong>in</strong>g schools helps create better opportunities for the<br />

children <strong>in</strong> the communities from which we s<strong>our</strong>ce cocoa.<br />

In <strong>2015</strong>, we cont<strong>in</strong>ued <strong>our</strong> programme, build<strong>in</strong>g two sixclassroom<br />

schools to make a total of 42 schools built or<br />

refurbished s<strong>in</strong>ce 2012.<br />

<strong>Nestlé</strong> <strong>and</strong> IFRC cont<strong>in</strong>ue partnership <strong>in</strong><br />

West Africa<br />

<strong>Nestlé</strong> has a long-st<strong>and</strong><strong>in</strong>g collaboration with the<br />

International Federation of Red Cross <strong>and</strong> Red Crescent<br />

Societies (IFRC) dat<strong>in</strong>g back to 2006. Our work together<br />

has particularly focused on improv<strong>in</strong>g rural communities’<br />

access to water. Through this collaboration, some<br />

228 861 people <strong>in</strong> Côte d’Ivoire’s cocoa-grow<strong>in</strong>g<br />

communities have benefited from access to clean<br />

dr<strong>in</strong>k<strong>in</strong>g water <strong>and</strong> sanitation. We now plan to extend<br />

improvements <strong>in</strong> hygiene <strong>and</strong> sanitation <strong>in</strong> rural<br />

communities <strong>in</strong>to neighb<strong>our</strong><strong>in</strong>g Ghana. Read more <strong>in</strong> the<br />

Gender equality<br />

<strong>Nestlé</strong> firmly believes that empower<strong>in</strong>g women with more life<br />

opportunities, knowledge <strong>and</strong> skills enables them to raise<br />

healthier families, lead<strong>in</strong>g to more children go<strong>in</strong>g to school<br />

rather than work<strong>in</strong>g on the family’s cocoa farms. Our<br />

commitment to gender equality <strong>in</strong>cludes support<strong>in</strong>g the<br />

we can do to improve the lives of women operat<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> <strong>our</strong><br />
