Pillar 7: Partnerships<br />

Our approach: we partner with lead<strong>in</strong>g organisations to<br />

improve <strong>our</strong> human rights performance on the ground <strong>and</strong><br />

deliver on <strong>our</strong> <strong>commitments</strong>.<br />

The Danish Institute for Human Rights (DIHR), Denmark’s<br />

national human rights <strong>in</strong>stitution, has been <strong>our</strong> ma<strong>in</strong> partner <strong>in</strong><br />

this area from the beg<strong>in</strong>n<strong>in</strong>g of <strong>our</strong> j<strong>our</strong>ney <strong>in</strong> 2008. It plays a<br />

particularly important role as part of the HRIAs but is also<br />

actively <strong>in</strong>volved <strong>in</strong> the development <strong>and</strong> implementation of<br />

the other pillars. The <strong>in</strong>stitute br<strong>in</strong>gs to <strong>our</strong> approach the<br />

external expertise <strong>and</strong> criticism that is needed for us to keep<br />

improv<strong>in</strong>g.<br />

The Fair Labor Association (FLA) has been a crucial element<br />

of <strong>our</strong> approach to child lab<strong>our</strong> <strong>in</strong> the cocoa <strong>and</strong> hazelnut<br />

sectors. It is also actively contribut<strong>in</strong>g to the revision of <strong>our</strong><br />

Supplier Code to align it with the FLA Code of Conduct.<br />

Our achievements <strong>in</strong> <strong>2015</strong><br />

Together with the DIHR, we carried out two HRIAs, <strong>in</strong> Myanmar<br />

<strong>and</strong> Ch<strong>in</strong>a (see page 234). The FLA carried out seven<br />

<strong>in</strong>dependent external monitor<strong>in</strong>g exercises (f<strong>our</strong> <strong>in</strong> Côte d’Ivoire<br />

<strong>and</strong> three <strong>in</strong> Turkey) that have been made public on their<br />

website, together with <strong>our</strong> corrective action plans (see Child<br />

lab<strong>our</strong> for more <strong>in</strong>formation). In addition, Verité carried out a<br />

comprehensive impact assessment of the lab<strong>our</strong> conditions <strong>in</strong><br />

the fish <strong>and</strong> seafood supply cha<strong>in</strong> <strong>in</strong> Thail<strong>and</strong>, <strong>and</strong> produced<br />

recommendations that we are now address<strong>in</strong>g through an<br />

action plan.<br />

Pillar 8: Monitor<strong>in</strong>g <strong>and</strong> report<strong>in</strong>g<br />

Our approach: we <strong>in</strong>tegrate human rights <strong>in</strong>dicators <strong>in</strong>to <strong>our</strong><br />

management systems to monitor <strong>our</strong> progress <strong>and</strong> report on<br />

it annually.<br />

Monitor<strong>in</strong>g is key to verify<strong>in</strong>g whether <strong>our</strong> human rights<br />

activities (policies, tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g, action plans, etc.) have been<br />

effectively <strong>in</strong>tegrated across the different levels of the<br />

company <strong>and</strong> <strong>in</strong>to <strong>our</strong> bus<strong>in</strong>ess activities. All <strong>our</strong> major<br />

monitor<strong>in</strong>g mechanisms now <strong>in</strong>clude relevant <strong>in</strong>dicators that<br />

help us make <strong>our</strong> human rights monitor<strong>in</strong>g broader, more<br />

systematic <strong>and</strong> cont<strong>in</strong>ual.<br />

The monitor<strong>in</strong>g mechanisms we use for different areas of<br />

<strong>our</strong> operations <strong>and</strong> supply cha<strong>in</strong> are summarised below:<br />
