Traceability <strong>and</strong> assessments<br />
The second component of <strong>our</strong> Responsible S<strong>our</strong>c<strong>in</strong>g activities<br />
is traceability <strong>and</strong> assessments. This <strong>in</strong>volves mapp<strong>in</strong>g <strong>our</strong><br />
supply cha<strong>in</strong>s back to the primary producer to identify where<br />
the material orig<strong>in</strong>ally comes from. It is a major undertak<strong>in</strong>g,<br />
especially with certa<strong>in</strong> <strong>in</strong>gredients, such as meat <strong>and</strong> seafood,<br />
which have very complex supply cha<strong>in</strong>s that may lack<br />
transparency. Traceability <strong>and</strong> transparency are, therefore,<br />
essential <strong>in</strong> enabl<strong>in</strong>g us to assess whether <strong>our</strong> sub-tier<br />
suppliers, with whom we do not have a direct commercial<br />
relationship, are meet<strong>in</strong>g <strong>our</strong> ethical <strong>and</strong> susta<strong>in</strong>ability<br />
requirements.<br />
All <strong>Nestlé</strong> suppliers are required to meet <strong>our</strong> requirements.<br />
However, we recognise that supply cha<strong>in</strong> transformation<br />
cannot be achieved overnight so, where appropriate, we<br />
support suppliers who are not able to meet the RSG<br />
immediately but are committed to elim<strong>in</strong>at<strong>in</strong>g noncompliances<br />
over time. Progress aga<strong>in</strong>st these action plans is<br />
monitored <strong>and</strong> regularly reported.<br />
Traceability <strong>and</strong> assessment process<br />
4 Monitor<strong>in</strong>g & compliance<br />
We re-assess the completion of<br />
identified issues to ensure st<strong>and</strong>ards<br />
are implemented <strong>and</strong> ma<strong>in</strong>ta<strong>in</strong>ed,<br />
before start<strong>in</strong>g the process with a<br />
new pool of suppliers.<br />
1 Engagement & mapp<strong>in</strong>g<br />
We ask <strong>our</strong> direct suppliers to<br />
work with us to map <strong>our</strong> upstream<br />
supply cha<strong>in</strong>s back to orig<strong>in</strong>.<br />
3 Cont<strong>in</strong>uous<br />
development plans<br />
We work with suppliers to improve<br />
farm <strong>and</strong> plantation performance<br />
<strong>and</strong> implement development<br />
programmes to tackle the issues<br />
identified.<br />
2 Guidel<strong>in</strong>es<br />
We work with expert partners<br />
to develop specific RSGs<br />
<strong>and</strong> assess practices at the<br />
material’s place of orig<strong>in</strong>.<br />
The process<br />
By mapp<strong>in</strong>g <strong>our</strong> supply cha<strong>in</strong>s back to orig<strong>in</strong>, we can engage<br />
with the supplier <strong>and</strong> perform assessments on the ground to<br />
check alignment with the <strong>Nestlé</strong> Responsible S<strong>our</strong>c<strong>in</strong>g<br />
Guidel<strong>in</strong>e. Where necessary, we can then work with suppliers<br />
to address any issues identified <strong>and</strong> support them through<br />
action plans to enable them to meet <strong>our</strong> requirements.<br />
To answer a question asked by <strong>our</strong> consumers – namely,<br />
‘Where does this food come from?’ – <strong>Nestlé</strong> uses a Supply<br />
Cha<strong>in</strong> Management programme operated by Achilles Ltd. This<br />
programme provides <strong>Nestlé</strong> suppliers <strong>and</strong> their sub-suppliers<br />
with a cost-effective, time-efficient <strong>and</strong> secure onl<strong>in</strong>e process<br />
to trace their <strong>in</strong>gredients back to their places of orig<strong>in</strong>.<br />
Supply cha<strong>in</strong> mapp<strong>in</strong>g is an <strong>in</strong>tegral requirement of <strong>Nestlé</strong>’s<br />
Responsible S<strong>our</strong>c<strong>in</strong>g Traceability Operations <strong>and</strong> is governed<br />
by the <strong>Nestlé</strong> Supplier Code. The ma<strong>in</strong> objectives of the Supply<br />
Cha<strong>in</strong> Mapp<strong>in</strong>g programme are to:<br />
• Develop a comprehensive picture of the extended supply<br />
cha<strong>in</strong>, right down to the farm level;<br />
• Ga<strong>in</strong> a better underst<strong>and</strong><strong>in</strong>g of the suppliers that contribute<br />
to the products sold by <strong>Nestlé</strong>; <strong>and</strong><br />
• Create a s<strong>in</strong>gle, reliable onl<strong>in</strong>e data s<strong>our</strong>ce of supply cha<strong>in</strong><br />
mapp<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>formation that can be accessed centrally <strong>and</strong> is<br />
ma<strong>in</strong>ta<strong>in</strong>ed annually <strong>and</strong> securely by an <strong>in</strong>dependent<br />
third party.<br />
The programme is be<strong>in</strong>g rolled out across <strong>our</strong> global supply<br />
base us<strong>in</strong>g a phased approach, founded on regions <strong>and</strong><br />
product categories. Participation is, therefore, on an <strong>in</strong>vitation<br />
basis only.<br />
