Our role <strong>in</strong> rural development <strong>and</strong> responsible s<strong>our</strong>c<strong>in</strong>g<br />
As a global company, <strong>Nestlé</strong> has a significant direct <strong>and</strong> <strong>in</strong>direct economic impact across <strong>our</strong> value cha<strong>in</strong>, around<br />
<strong>our</strong> factories <strong>and</strong> particularly through <strong>our</strong> supply cha<strong>in</strong>. Our approach to Creat<strong>in</strong>g <strong>Shared</strong> <strong>Value</strong> is perhaps most<br />
evident <strong>in</strong> the area of rural development, focus<strong>in</strong>g on the rural communities around the world from which we<br />
s<strong>our</strong>ce agricultural raw materials.<br />
Millions of farmers depend on <strong>our</strong> bus<strong>in</strong>ess for their livelihoods. More than 760 000 supply us directly or through<br />
co-operatives <strong>and</strong> collection centres, while others are part of longer supply cha<strong>in</strong>s. The wellbe<strong>in</strong>g of these farmers,<br />
small-scale entrepreneurs, suppliers <strong>and</strong> rural communities is <strong>in</strong>tr<strong>in</strong>sic to secur<strong>in</strong>g global food supplies, while<br />
deliver<strong>in</strong>g <strong>our</strong> own growth strategy.<br />
The year <strong>in</strong> brief<br />
Challenges Actions Achievements<br />
Farm<strong>in</strong>g seen as not attractive<br />
Rural communities need to be more<br />
attractive places <strong>in</strong> which to live, work<br />
<strong>and</strong> <strong>in</strong>vest. Farm<strong>in</strong>g needs to be seen as<br />
a bus<strong>in</strong>ess <strong>and</strong> a livelihood of choice that<br />
offers opportunities for societal<br />
advancement.<br />
Rural Development Framework<br />
Through the framework we have identified<br />
eight core areas that we believe are<br />
important elements of rural development.<br />
We have completed 11 basel<strong>in</strong>e<br />
assessments so far, to help us ascerta<strong>in</strong><br />
current conditions <strong>and</strong> design<br />
appropriate <strong>in</strong>terventions.<br />
Low productivity<br />
Br<strong>in</strong>g<strong>in</strong>g about real change at a farm<br />
level provides many challenges, from<br />
check<strong>in</strong>g that farmers act on <strong>our</strong> tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g<br />
<strong>and</strong> advice, to ensur<strong>in</strong>g they have<br />
access to credit.<br />
Farmer Connect<br />
Our Farmer Connect programme supports<br />
farmers through local s<strong>our</strong>c<strong>in</strong>g <strong>and</strong><br />
assistance, tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g, develop<strong>in</strong>g alternative<br />
<strong>in</strong>come streams <strong>and</strong> support<strong>in</strong>g women<br />
<strong>and</strong> young farmers.<br />
400 000<br />
Farmers access<strong>in</strong>g tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g through <strong>our</strong><br />
capacity-build<strong>in</strong>g programmes.<br />
Supply cha<strong>in</strong> complexity<br />
Many of <strong>our</strong> supply cha<strong>in</strong>s are<br />
complex, which makes trac<strong>in</strong>g raw<br />
materials a challenge.<br />
Publish<strong>in</strong>g progress reports<br />
We publish category-specific reports<br />
throughout the year, detail<strong>in</strong>g the<br />
progress we are mak<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> the<br />
responsible s<strong>our</strong>c<strong>in</strong>g of <strong>our</strong> priority<br />
raw materials.<br />
54%<br />
Percentage of high-priority raw materials<br />
categories that was traceable back to the<br />
primary s<strong>our</strong>ce (e.g. plantation or farm)<br />
<strong>and</strong>/or had their supply cha<strong>in</strong>s mapped.<br />
<strong>Nestlé</strong> recognises that loyalty between farmers, suppliers <strong>and</strong><br />
the company is supported <strong>and</strong> enhanced by <strong>in</strong>vestments along<br />
the value cha<strong>in</strong> – for example, the provision of improved<br />
plant<strong>in</strong>g materials, tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g programmes <strong>and</strong> technical support.<br />
For a number of years, we have engaged heavily <strong>in</strong> rural<br />
development through schemes such as Farmer Connect <strong>and</strong><br />
the Susta<strong>in</strong>able Agriculture Initiative at <strong>Nestlé</strong> (SAIN).<br />
It is <strong>in</strong>creas<strong>in</strong>gly evident, however, that <strong>in</strong> addition to<br />
support<strong>in</strong>g farmers with<strong>in</strong> the supply cha<strong>in</strong>, we need to<br />
facilitate progress on broader aspects, such as women’s<br />
empowerment, nutrition, <strong>and</strong> access to clean water <strong>and</strong><br />
adequate sanitation. This support helps to create the<br />
circumstances that allow farmers to pursue their livelihoods by<br />
choice, <strong>and</strong> strengthens the communities <strong>in</strong> which they live.<br />
Now, to guide us further, we have developed a diagnostic<br />
tool <strong>and</strong> process – the Rural Development Framework – to<br />
help us align <strong>our</strong> bus<strong>in</strong>ess activities with local priorities. We<br />
cont<strong>in</strong>ue to share <strong>our</strong> progress on supplier assessments <strong>and</strong><br />
traceability activities; <strong>and</strong> on <strong>our</strong> bespoke coffee <strong>and</strong> cocoa<br />
plans for improv<strong>in</strong>g the lives <strong>and</strong> social conditions of farmers<br />
<strong>and</strong> the quality of their crops.<br />
We recognise that the boundaries between the roles <strong>and</strong><br />
responsibilities of governments <strong>and</strong> those of companies are<br />
becom<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>creas<strong>in</strong>gly blurred. To support rural development,<br />
we cont<strong>in</strong>ue to work cooperatively with a range of partners at<br />
national <strong>and</strong> <strong>in</strong>ternational levels.<br />
