NRC hosted its 12 th <strong>Nestlé</strong> International Nutrition Symposium on<br />

Cognition <strong>and</strong> Bra<strong>in</strong> Health <strong>in</strong> October <strong>2015</strong>. The event, held at<br />

<strong>Nestlé</strong>’s headquarters <strong>in</strong> Vevey, Switzerl<strong>and</strong>, focused on two key<br />

areas: the role of nutrition dur<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>fant bra<strong>in</strong> growth <strong>and</strong> the<br />

development of nutritional th<strong>in</strong>k<strong>in</strong>g to address the <strong>in</strong>crease of<br />

neurodegenerative disease. Academics from around the world<br />

participated, <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g Nobel laureate Professor Eric K<strong>and</strong>el, <strong>and</strong><br />

data on a new <strong>in</strong>fection hypothesis for Alzheimer’s disease was<br />

presented. The event also <strong>in</strong>cluded an address from <strong>Nestlé</strong><br />

chairman Peter Brabeck-Letmathe. Learn more about <strong>our</strong><br />

Innovative nutrition <strong>in</strong><br />

South Africa<br />

Morogo is a plant similar to sp<strong>in</strong>ach, native to South Africa,<br />

which traditionally formed part of a staple diet. However,<br />

<strong>in</strong>creased urbanisation <strong>and</strong> chang<strong>in</strong>g attitudes to food have<br />

reduced its popularity. NRC <strong>in</strong> Lausanne, Switzerl<strong>and</strong>, has<br />

developed a new variety of Maggi noodles that conta<strong>in</strong>s<br />

morogo, which is high <strong>in</strong> prote<strong>in</strong>, vitam<strong>in</strong>s <strong>and</strong> m<strong>in</strong>erals, <strong>in</strong> the<br />

‘tastemaker’ sachet used to flav<strong>our</strong> <strong>and</strong> fortify the noodles.<br />

The noodles were developed as a partnership between NRC<br />

<strong>and</strong> the South African Council for Scientific <strong>and</strong> Industrial<br />

Research (CSIR) <strong>and</strong> Agricultural Research Council (ARC)<br />

to research native plants with clear health benefits for<br />

everyday use.<br />

Taste, nutritional quality <strong>and</strong> abundance were three th<strong>in</strong>gs<br />

sought by the scientists <strong>in</strong> an <strong>in</strong>gredient. Morogo was chosen<br />

as it could be processed as a food, provide farmers with<br />

<strong>in</strong>come <strong>and</strong> appealed to millions of South Africans. <strong>Nestlé</strong> <strong>and</strong><br />

its partners worked closely with farmers to identify prospective<br />

species of morogo, ref<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g the amaranthus species <strong>in</strong>to a<br />

powder that was trialled – first on an artificial gut, <strong>and</strong> then on<br />

people. These trials led to the production of Maggi 2 M<strong>in</strong>ute<br />

Noodles <strong>in</strong> Babelegi, north of Pretoria, <strong>and</strong> the product launch<br />

<strong>in</strong> October <strong>2015</strong>. If the noodles prove successful, the morogo<br />

supply cha<strong>in</strong> will be exp<strong>and</strong>ed across South Africa.<br />

NRC is <strong>in</strong>tensify<strong>in</strong>g its research <strong>in</strong>to epigenetics, the science<br />

of how environmental factors, such as nutrition <strong>and</strong> eat<strong>in</strong>g<br />

behavi<strong>our</strong>s, impact <strong>our</strong> genes <strong>and</strong> health, <strong>and</strong> that of <strong>our</strong><br />

offspr<strong>in</strong>g <strong>and</strong> future generations. In 2014, <strong>Nestlé</strong> announced<br />

an <strong>in</strong>vestment of CHF 22 million <strong>and</strong> an extension of <strong>our</strong><br />

collaboration with EpiGen, which br<strong>in</strong>gs together lead<strong>in</strong>g<br />

researchers from academic <strong>in</strong>stitutions <strong>in</strong> New Zeal<strong>and</strong>, the<br />

UK <strong>and</strong> S<strong>in</strong>gapore.<br />

In <strong>2015</strong>, <strong>Nestlé</strong> <strong>and</strong> EpiGen scientists jo<strong>in</strong>tly published one<br />

of the first comprehensive reports of whole gra<strong>in</strong> <strong>in</strong>take <strong>in</strong> an<br />

Asian population, <strong>and</strong> <strong>in</strong> pregnant women. The study showed<br />

that whole gra<strong>in</strong> <strong>in</strong>take among expectant mothers <strong>in</strong> S<strong>in</strong>gapore<br />

is below the recommended dietary guidel<strong>in</strong>es.<br />

Nutritional <strong>in</strong>terventions for<br />

the metabolic health of mothers<br />

<strong>and</strong> <strong>in</strong>fants<br />

A nutritious diet <strong>and</strong> healthy eat<strong>in</strong>g behavi<strong>our</strong> dur<strong>in</strong>g<br />

pregnancy reduce the risks of complications <strong>and</strong> metabolic<br />

disease <strong>in</strong> offspr<strong>in</strong>g. NRC is dedicated to develop<strong>in</strong>g nutritional<br />

concepts <strong>and</strong> educational programmes that promote maternal<br />

<strong>and</strong> offspr<strong>in</strong>g health, with a focus on reduc<strong>in</strong>g the risk of<br />

develop<strong>in</strong>g obesity later <strong>in</strong> life. To this end, NRC is conduct<strong>in</strong>g<br />

a multi-centre cl<strong>in</strong>ical <strong>in</strong>tervention trial of a specific blend of<br />

nutrients <strong>and</strong> probiotics <strong>in</strong> pregnant women, <strong>in</strong> collaboration<br />

with researchers from EpiGen <strong>and</strong> the National University<br />

Hospital, S<strong>in</strong>gapore. We believe that this is the first study to<br />

exam<strong>in</strong>e the impact of specific nutrients, from before<br />

conception <strong>and</strong> dur<strong>in</strong>g pregnancy, on both maternal <strong>and</strong> <strong>in</strong>fant<br />

metabolic health.<br />

The study, entitled ‘Nutritional Intervention Preconception<br />

<strong>and</strong> dur<strong>in</strong>g Pregnancy to ma<strong>in</strong>ta<strong>in</strong> healthy glucosE levels <strong>and</strong><br />

offspR<strong>in</strong>g health’ (NiPPeR), will assess the effects of a<br />

nutritional solution, consumed both before <strong>and</strong> dur<strong>in</strong>g<br />

pregnancy, on ma<strong>in</strong>ta<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g healthy blood sugar, vitam<strong>in</strong> <strong>and</strong><br />

m<strong>in</strong>eral levels <strong>in</strong> the mother, susta<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g a healthy pregnancy<br />

<strong>and</strong> on promot<strong>in</strong>g healthy growth <strong>and</strong> development of her<br />

<strong>in</strong>fant. The trial, which began <strong>in</strong> July <strong>2015</strong>, will <strong>in</strong>clude 1800<br />

women <strong>in</strong> Southampton, S<strong>in</strong>gapore <strong>and</strong> Auckl<strong>and</strong>.<br />
