Our role <strong>in</strong> environmental susta<strong>in</strong>ability<br />

As an essential prerequisite for Creat<strong>in</strong>g <strong>Shared</strong> <strong>Value</strong>, we have to not only comply with all applicable legal<br />

requirements <strong>and</strong> the <strong>Nestlé</strong> Corporate Bus<strong>in</strong>ess Pr<strong>in</strong>ciples but also ensure that the pr<strong>in</strong>ciple of susta<strong>in</strong>ability is<br />

embedded <strong>in</strong> all of <strong>our</strong> activities, br<strong>and</strong>s <strong>and</strong> products. This is particularly important <strong>in</strong> an environment where<br />

water is <strong>in</strong>creas<strong>in</strong>gly scarce, natural res<strong>our</strong>ces are constra<strong>in</strong>ed <strong>and</strong> biodiversity is decl<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g. All of these elements<br />

are vital for feed<strong>in</strong>g a grow<strong>in</strong>g world population <strong>and</strong> for the development of <strong>Nestlé</strong>. Moreover, climate change may<br />

exacerbate <strong>our</strong> planet’s environmental challenges.<br />

As stated <strong>in</strong> The <strong>Nestlé</strong> Policy on Environmental Susta<strong>in</strong>ability, we are committed to environmentally<br />

susta<strong>in</strong>able bus<strong>in</strong>ess practices at all stages of the product life cycle. This means mak<strong>in</strong>g the right choices to<br />

protect the future, by us<strong>in</strong>g susta<strong>in</strong>ably managed <strong>and</strong> renewable res<strong>our</strong>ces where we can, improv<strong>in</strong>g res<strong>our</strong>ce<br />

efficiency <strong>in</strong> <strong>our</strong> operations <strong>and</strong> cont<strong>in</strong>u<strong>in</strong>g to work towards <strong>our</strong> target of zero waste. We also seek to provide<br />

climate change leadership, preserve natural capital, <strong>and</strong> provide mean<strong>in</strong>gful <strong>and</strong> accurate environmental<br />

<strong>in</strong>formation. To help us assess <strong>and</strong> optimise the environmental performance of <strong>our</strong> products <strong>and</strong> their packag<strong>in</strong>g,<br />

we apply a product life-cycle approach, <strong>in</strong>volv<strong>in</strong>g <strong>our</strong> partners, from farm to consumer <strong>and</strong> beyond.<br />

agreement at COP 21 <strong>in</strong> Paris, Car<strong>in</strong>g for<br />

Climate, <strong>and</strong> the American Bus<strong>in</strong>ess Act<br />

on Climate pledge.<br />

Per the UNEP, an estimated 11.2 billion<br />

metric tonnes of solid waste are currently<br />

be<strong>in</strong>g collected around the world every<br />

year, <strong>and</strong> the decay of the organic<br />

portion is contribut<strong>in</strong>g around 5% of<br />

global greenhouse gas emissions (GHG).<br />

Our Zero Waste for Disposal<br />

Guidel<strong>in</strong>e helps all <strong>Nestlé</strong> sites prevent,<br />

reuse <strong>and</strong> recover waste for disposal <strong>and</strong><br />

by-products.<br />

roll<strong>in</strong>g out QR codes across <strong>our</strong><br />

product portfolio, l<strong>in</strong>k<strong>in</strong>g consumers to<br />

mobile-friendly websites that provide<br />

additional, user-friendly content on<br />

environmental issues.<br />
