By 2020 – Reduce GHG emissions (Scopes 1 <strong>and</strong> 2) per<br />
tonne of product <strong>in</strong> every product category to achieve an<br />
overall reduction of 35% <strong>in</strong> <strong>our</strong> manufactur<strong>in</strong>g operations<br />
versus 2010.<br />

We have made the reduction of GHG emissions <strong>and</strong> climate<br />
change adaptation a focus area <strong>in</strong> The <strong>Nestlé</strong> Policy on<br />
Environmental Susta<strong>in</strong>ability <strong>and</strong> have committed to reduce<br />
<strong>our</strong> direct GHG emissions per tonne of product by 35% by<br />
<strong>2015</strong> compared with 2005, result<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> an absolute reduction<br />
of GHG emissions. Hav<strong>in</strong>g achieved that target, we have now<br />
announced a new GHG reduction target for 2020. This covers<br />
<strong>in</strong>direct as well as direct emissions (Scopes 1 <strong>and</strong> 2), <strong>and</strong> is<br />
consistent with scientific estimates that we should limit global<br />
warm<strong>in</strong>g to less than 2°C.<br />
We have reduced the GHGs emitted <strong>in</strong> the manufactur<strong>in</strong>g of<br />
one kilogramme of products by 16% compared to five years<br />
ago. To achieve this, we have implemented numerous<br />
solutions, <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g improv<strong>in</strong>g energy efficiency of <strong>our</strong><br />
factories through <strong>Nestlé</strong> Cont<strong>in</strong>uous Excellence <strong>and</strong> <strong>in</strong>stall<strong>in</strong>g<br />
new equipment, switch<strong>in</strong>g to cleaner fuels <strong>and</strong> us<strong>in</strong>g<br />
renewable energy s<strong>our</strong>ces. For example:<br />
• W<strong>in</strong>d power now meets nearly 80% of <strong>Nestlé</strong> Mexico’s<br />
electricity needs, avoid<strong>in</strong>g the emission of about 100 000<br />
tonnes of CO 2 eq annually;<br />
• <strong>Nestlé</strong>’s worldwide operations now <strong>in</strong>clude 22 factories that<br />
are us<strong>in</strong>g spent coffee grounds as a renewable <strong>and</strong> carbonneutral<br />
fuel, <strong>and</strong> 21 factories us<strong>in</strong>g wood chips as a<br />
renewable energy s<strong>our</strong>ce; <strong>and</strong><br />
• In France, a f<strong>our</strong>th <strong>Nestlé</strong> factory is be<strong>in</strong>g converted to use<br />
wood as a renewable alternative to fossil fuel. With three<br />
factories already obta<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g between 88% <strong>and</strong> 94% of their<br />
energy needs from wood chips, <strong>our</strong> Nescafé factory <strong>in</strong> Dieppe<br />
will burn spent coffee grounds <strong>and</strong> wood chips from early<br />
2016. The use of wood boilers has reduced by more than 40%<br />
the direct CO 2 emissions <strong>in</strong> <strong>Nestlé</strong> France s<strong>in</strong>ce 2010.<br />
We are phas<strong>in</strong>g out <strong>in</strong>dustrial refrigerants with high global<br />
warm<strong>in</strong>g <strong>and</strong> ozone-deplet<strong>in</strong>g potential, <strong>and</strong> will further<br />
exp<strong>and</strong> the use of natural refrigerants to <strong>our</strong> <strong>in</strong>dustrial<br />
refrigeration systems <strong>and</strong> ice cream chest freezers.<br />
% reduction<br />
s<strong>in</strong>ce 2010<br />
As deforestation is a major contributor to <strong>in</strong>creas<strong>in</strong>g global<br />
GHG emissions, we want to see zero net deforestation as soon<br />
as possible <strong>and</strong> have committed to support<strong>in</strong>g efforts towards<br />
this ambition <strong>in</strong> <strong>our</strong> supply cha<strong>in</strong>s by 2020.<br />
With food wastage generat<strong>in</strong>g significant GHG emissions,<br />
we have also committed to achiev<strong>in</strong>g zero waste for disposal<br />
<strong>in</strong> <strong>our</strong> sites by 2020.<br />
Direct emissions<br />
By <strong>in</strong>vest<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> renewable s<strong>our</strong>ces, improv<strong>in</strong>g energy<br />
efficiency <strong>and</strong> switch<strong>in</strong>g to cleaner fuels, we reduced total<br />
direct GHG emissions by 5.2% last year, to 3.7 million tonnes<br />
of CO 2 eq. That represents a 42.7% reduction s<strong>in</strong>ce 2005; <strong>in</strong><br />
the same period, production volume has risen by 50.2%.<br />
So, by the end of <strong>2015</strong>, we have reduced <strong>our</strong> direct GHG<br />
emissions per tonne of product by 42.7% s<strong>in</strong>ce 2005. This<br />
equates to a 14% absolute reduction, mean<strong>in</strong>g we have<br />
exceeded <strong>our</strong> <strong>2015</strong> target. Hav<strong>in</strong>g met this <strong>in</strong>itial target ahead<br />
of schedule, we must now ma<strong>in</strong>ta<strong>in</strong> <strong>our</strong> progress <strong>in</strong> this area.<br />
