<strong>Nestlé</strong> Professional has created an easy-to-use tool that helps<br />
restaurants, caterers <strong>and</strong> other out-of-home providers<br />
underst<strong>and</strong> the environmental impacts of provid<strong>in</strong>g coffee to<br />
employees or customers. Developed with specialist waste<br />
management company SWR, it provides compell<strong>in</strong>g facts<br />
about the true environmental <strong>and</strong> economic costs to bus<strong>in</strong>ess<br />
<strong>and</strong> <strong>society</strong>, <strong>and</strong> provides practical suggestions tailored to<br />
<strong>Nestlé</strong> Professional’s customer base for reduc<strong>in</strong>g, reus<strong>in</strong>g<br />
or recycl<strong>in</strong>g.<br />
Solís: committed to responsible<br />
bus<strong>in</strong>ess practices<br />
The Spanish market for tomato-based sauces is perceived to<br />
have a low added value. Therefore, to strengthen the Solís<br />
br<strong>and</strong> through a commitment to both consumers <strong>and</strong> the<br />
environment, the Solís Responsable programme was launched.<br />
This comb<strong>in</strong>es three elements:<br />
• Nutritionally balanced products us<strong>in</strong>g natural flav<strong>our</strong>s <strong>and</strong><br />
no added preservatives;<br />
• Responsible local s<strong>our</strong>c<strong>in</strong>g of <strong>in</strong>gredients, us<strong>in</strong>g only<br />
tomatoes from Vegas del Guadiana <strong>in</strong> southern Spa<strong>in</strong>; <strong>and</strong><br />
• Cont<strong>in</strong>ual improvement <strong>in</strong> environmental performance.<br />
The tomatoes used <strong>in</strong> Solís products are grown under the strict<br />
rules of the Extremadura region, promot<strong>in</strong>g best-practice<br />
agricultural process that lead to high-quality products while<br />
respect<strong>in</strong>g the environment. By us<strong>in</strong>g soil moisture sensors<br />
<strong>and</strong> apply<strong>in</strong>g crop rotation techniques, farmers have <strong>in</strong>creased<br />
yields, improved water efficiency <strong>and</strong> cut the use of fertilisers<br />
<strong>and</strong> pesticides. Go<strong>in</strong>g forward, we will establish best-<strong>in</strong>-class<br />
performance <strong>in</strong>dicators for lead<strong>in</strong>g tomato farmers.<br />
To boost consumer engagement, the br<strong>and</strong>’s ‘Urban<br />
Garden’ promotion <strong>in</strong>volved new packag<strong>in</strong>g <strong>and</strong> po<strong>in</strong>t-of-sale<br />
material, social media campaigns through Facebook <strong>and</strong><br />
YouTube, <strong>and</strong> participation at the biggest European children’s<br />
event, help<strong>in</strong>g generate almost 80 000 website visits <strong>in</strong> the first<br />
month.<br />
As a result, organic growth rose by 2% <strong>in</strong> a challeng<strong>in</strong>g<br />
market, which saw 165 500 more packs sold, <strong>and</strong> br<strong>and</strong><br />
awareness <strong>in</strong>crease by 18%.<br />
We are also work<strong>in</strong>g with Conesa <strong>and</strong> Fundación Global<br />
Nature <strong>in</strong> the Badajoz region to further improve the<br />
environmental performance of tomato farm<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> the region,<br />
assess<strong>in</strong>g the farm<strong>in</strong>g practices of 20 lead<strong>in</strong>g farms (cover<strong>in</strong>g<br />
1000 hectares) <strong>and</strong> visit<strong>in</strong>g farms <strong>in</strong> Italy to share best practice.<br />
