higher yield<strong>in</strong>g, <strong>and</strong> more drought <strong>and</strong> disease resistant, reduc<strong>in</strong>g the number of plants that farmers<br />
lose to disease or climate-related issues.<br />
<strong>Nestlé</strong> assesses <strong>and</strong> optimises environmental performance, <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g that related to food wastage,<br />
throughout the value cha<strong>in</strong> from the earliest stage <strong>in</strong> the development of new or renovated products.<br />
For example, we <strong>in</strong>itiated a research project <strong>in</strong> France to def<strong>in</strong>e the carrot cultivars that best match<br />
consumer preferences. The project resulted <strong>in</strong> more uniformly shaped carrots, which reduces waste <strong>in</strong><br />
harvest<strong>in</strong>g, <strong>and</strong> higher dry matter content, which reduces waste <strong>in</strong> process<strong>in</strong>g <strong>and</strong> improves<br />
efficiency.<br />
<strong>Nestlé</strong>’s R&D network also looks for <strong>in</strong>novative waste-recovery options to optimise value. In <strong>our</strong><br />
Product Technology Centre <strong>in</strong> Orbe, Switzerl<strong>and</strong>, <strong>Nestlé</strong> was authorised by veter<strong>in</strong>arian services at a<br />
regional (canton) level to use cereal by-products as feed for cattle or pigs.<br />
Agriculture<br />
<strong>Nestlé</strong> supports the farm<strong>in</strong>g communities where it s<strong>our</strong>ces agricultural raw materials. We provide<br />
technical assistance to help avoid pre-harvest losses through yield improvement <strong>and</strong> reduce postharvest<br />
losses through optimis<strong>in</strong>g the delivery of raw materials to the factory.<br />
In the milk supply cha<strong>in</strong>, we’ve provided cool<strong>in</strong>g facilities to farmers <strong>in</strong> develop<strong>in</strong>g countries that<br />
have reduced milk losses, thereby sav<strong>in</strong>g water, energy <strong>and</strong> GHG emissions, as well as money. In<br />
Pakistan, <strong>in</strong> the district of Renala, we have more than halved the losses of milk between the cool<strong>in</strong>g<br />
facilities <strong>and</strong> the factory. And <strong>our</strong> Gra<strong>in</strong>s Quality Improvement Project is work<strong>in</strong>g towards a 60%<br />
reduction <strong>in</strong> mycotox<strong>in</strong> contam<strong>in</strong>ation levels <strong>in</strong> the cereal gra<strong>in</strong>s we s<strong>our</strong>ce for <strong>our</strong> cereal br<strong>and</strong>s <strong>in</strong><br />
Central <strong>and</strong> West Africa. This is be<strong>in</strong>g achieved through a comb<strong>in</strong>ation of good agricultural, dry<strong>in</strong>g <strong>and</strong><br />
storage practices, <strong>and</strong> capacity-build<strong>in</strong>g tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g sessions from <strong>Nestlé</strong> agronomists. In <strong>2015</strong>, 14 660<br />
African farmers were tra<strong>in</strong>ed <strong>and</strong> are now able to produce gra<strong>in</strong>s with mycotox<strong>in</strong> levels with<strong>in</strong> <strong>Nestlé</strong><br />
st<strong>and</strong>ards (f<strong>our</strong> parts per billion), mean<strong>in</strong>g less gra<strong>in</strong> is thrown away.<br />
Similarly, up to 30% of the rice <strong>and</strong> maize used to make <strong>Nestlé</strong> <strong>in</strong>fant cereals <strong>in</strong> Central <strong>and</strong> West<br />
Africa were be<strong>in</strong>g lost to mould when stored <strong>and</strong> h<strong>and</strong>led <strong>in</strong>appropriately <strong>in</strong> the humid environment.<br />
<strong>Nestlé</strong> Nutrition provided <strong>in</strong>tensive tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g to 30 000 farmers on proper harvest<strong>in</strong>g methods <strong>and</strong> even<br />
employed a theatre group to share best practice <strong>in</strong> an engag<strong>in</strong>g way.<br />
In Brazil, <strong>Nestlé</strong>’s NATA (Centre of Authorised Technical Assistance) programme is help<strong>in</strong>g dairy<br />
farmers to better manage their farms <strong>and</strong> avoid pre-harvest losses through susta<strong>in</strong>able improvements<br />
<strong>in</strong> yield. <strong>Nestlé</strong> is work<strong>in</strong>g with local <strong>in</strong>stitutes to tra<strong>in</strong> farmers to further <strong>in</strong>crease milk production <strong>and</strong><br />
quality, while meet<strong>in</strong>g the terms of The <strong>Nestlé</strong> Supplier Code <strong>and</strong> the <strong>Nestlé</strong> Responsible S<strong>our</strong>c<strong>in</strong>g<br />
Guidel<strong>in</strong>e. Agronomists visit farmers periodically to monitor dairy activities <strong>and</strong> help them make<br />
<strong>in</strong>formed decisions to improve their profitability, environmental <strong>and</strong> social performance, <strong>and</strong><br />
susta<strong>in</strong>ability. The 900 farmers participat<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> the programme have more than doubled the growth<br />
rate of milk production.<br />
In <strong>our</strong> factories <strong>and</strong> distribution centres, <strong>our</strong> goal is zero waste for disposal by 2020; currently, this has<br />
been achieved <strong>in</strong> 105 factories. We are also work<strong>in</strong>g towards maximis<strong>in</strong>g the value of recycled or<br />
recovered materials from <strong>our</strong> operations, <strong>and</strong> provide donations to food banks <strong>in</strong> 20 countries.<br />
