Water stewardship beyond<br />
<strong>our</strong> factory gates<br />
The susta<strong>in</strong>able supply of water of a sufficient quality <strong>and</strong><br />
quantity is essential for <strong>our</strong> factories, but with many other<br />
stakeholders extract<strong>in</strong>g water from, <strong>and</strong> return<strong>in</strong>g water to, a<br />
s<strong>in</strong>gle catchment, the process is complex. We therefore<br />
underst<strong>and</strong> that, sometimes, we can make the greatest<br />
difference to the health of a local water catchment by <strong>in</strong>vest<strong>in</strong>g<br />
<strong>in</strong> multi-stakeholder <strong>in</strong>itiatives beyond <strong>our</strong> own operations.<br />
Collective community action can help embed long-term<br />
susta<strong>in</strong>able water use, so we aim to <strong>in</strong>vest <strong>in</strong> shared <strong>in</strong>itiatives<br />
that help other catchment users to improve water stewardship<br />
<strong>in</strong> selected sites.<br />
Our objective<br />
By 2016 – Def<strong>in</strong>e water stewardship <strong>in</strong>itiatives <strong>and</strong> start<br />
implementation <strong>in</strong> five high-priority locations.<br />
Our management teams have identified five high-priority<br />
locations where water stewardship <strong>in</strong>itiatives are necessary.<br />
Although progress varies, by the end of <strong>2015</strong>, activities had<br />
begun <strong>in</strong> all five locations; two examples are provided <strong>in</strong> the<br />
case studies on this page <strong>and</strong> pages 142 <strong>and</strong> 161.<br />
Implement<strong>in</strong>g these programmes will improve the<br />
susta<strong>in</strong>able management of shared water res<strong>our</strong>ces <strong>in</strong> the<br />
water catchments where we operate, <strong>and</strong> strengthen<br />
stakeholder perceptions of <strong>our</strong> local contribution.<br />
Water stewardship <strong>in</strong> the<br />
Kab<strong>in</strong>i River bas<strong>in</strong>, India<br />
The Kab<strong>in</strong>i river flows through the state of Karnataka, where<br />
<strong>Nestlé</strong>’s Nanjangud factory is located. The river catchment is<br />
7000 km 2 <strong>in</strong> area, 46% of which is agricultural l<strong>and</strong>. In recent<br />
years, low ra<strong>in</strong>fall, comb<strong>in</strong>ed with high water dem<strong>and</strong> with<strong>in</strong><br />
the catchment, has resulted <strong>in</strong> periods of <strong>in</strong>sufficient water<br />
supply for the sugarcane <strong>and</strong> rice farmers <strong>in</strong> the river bas<strong>in</strong>.<br />
To extend water stewardship efforts across the whole<br />
catchment area, <strong>Nestlé</strong> India’s Nanjangud factory cont<strong>in</strong>ues to<br />
engage with local government departments. It also signed a<br />
Memor<strong>and</strong>um of Underst<strong>and</strong><strong>in</strong>g with AgSri, an agricultural<br />
services company that developed ecologically susta<strong>in</strong>able<br />
systems, such as the Susta<strong>in</strong>able Sugarcane Initiative (SSI) <strong>and</strong><br />
the System of Rice Intensification (SRI), to conduct pilot<br />
projects. These trials will test the likelihood of rice <strong>and</strong><br />
sugarcane farmers adopt<strong>in</strong>g improved techniques for grow<strong>in</strong>g<br />
water-<strong>in</strong>tensive crops over a three-year period.<br />
After a three-month delay, the project to implement the SSI<br />
activities <strong>in</strong> the Kab<strong>in</strong>i bas<strong>in</strong> eventually began <strong>in</strong> September<br />
<strong>2015</strong>. In the first quarter, this has <strong>in</strong>volved:<br />
• Identify<strong>in</strong>g sugarcane <strong>and</strong> rice-grow<strong>in</strong>g villages <strong>in</strong> the Kab<strong>in</strong>i<br />
catchment, <strong>and</strong> select<strong>in</strong>g farmers for tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g;<br />
• Collect<strong>in</strong>g basel<strong>in</strong>e <strong>in</strong>formation <strong>and</strong> establish<strong>in</strong>g plant<strong>in</strong>g<br />
protocols for SRI/SSI;<br />
• Establish<strong>in</strong>g greenhouses <strong>and</strong> an SSI nursery with a<br />
capacity for 45 000 plantlets; <strong>and</strong><br />
• Prepar<strong>in</strong>g <strong>and</strong> distribut<strong>in</strong>g tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g materials <strong>in</strong> the<br />
local language, <strong>and</strong> tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g around 110 sugarcane <strong>and</strong><br />
101 rice farmers.<br />
We will cont<strong>in</strong>ue to conduct tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g for rice <strong>and</strong> sugarcane<br />
farmers across the entire river bas<strong>in</strong> <strong>and</strong> the seedl<strong>in</strong>gs will be<br />
sent out from the nursery to a selection of farms <strong>in</strong> early 2016.<br />
