When a natural disaster occurs or when water s<strong>our</strong>ces <strong>and</strong><br />
distribution systems are temporarily unavailable, provid<strong>in</strong>g<br />
access to safe dr<strong>in</strong>k<strong>in</strong>g water becomes a health priority <strong>and</strong><br />
bottled water can play a vital role. We have a long history of<br />
help<strong>in</strong>g local communities after natural disasters such as<br />
hurricanes <strong>and</strong> big storms, truck<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> bottled water us<strong>in</strong>g <strong>our</strong><br />
own milk tankers for deliveries or provid<strong>in</strong>g ready-to-use<br />
water-fill<strong>in</strong>g stations at <strong>our</strong> factories.<br />
A strong earthquake hit Nepal at the end of April <strong>2015</strong>,<br />
followed by many powerful aftershocks. The earthquakes<br />
caused extensive damage to build<strong>in</strong>gs, <strong>and</strong> thous<strong>and</strong>s of<br />
deaths <strong>and</strong> <strong>in</strong>juries were reported <strong>in</strong> neighb<strong>our</strong><strong>in</strong>g Pakistan,<br />
India <strong>and</strong> Bangladesh;<br />
• <strong>Nestlé</strong> is one of f<strong>our</strong> companies agree<strong>in</strong>g to donate up to<br />
6.5 million bottles of water to meet the needs of more than<br />
10 000 schoolchildren <strong>in</strong> crisis-hit Fl<strong>in</strong>t, Michigan. Tap water<br />
<strong>in</strong> the US town became contam<strong>in</strong>ated with lead dur<strong>in</strong>g the<br />
construction of a pipel<strong>in</strong>e under a nearby lake; <strong>and</strong><br />
• In Texas, record ra<strong>in</strong>fall caused major flood<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> May <strong>2015</strong>.<br />
<strong>Nestlé</strong> Waters North America provided 152 000 bottles of<br />
water via the American Red Cross.<br />
Help<strong>in</strong>g consumers use less water<br />
Through product packag<strong>in</strong>g <strong>and</strong> br<strong>and</strong> websites, we provide<br />
consumers with mean<strong>in</strong>gful <strong>and</strong> accurate environmental<br />
<strong>in</strong>formation about how simple changes <strong>in</strong> behavi<strong>our</strong> can<br />
reduce water use when prepar<strong>in</strong>g <strong>our</strong> products.<br />
On the UK Nescafé website, for example, we provide<br />
consumers with top tips for responsible consumption, such as<br />
prepar<strong>in</strong>g the right quantity of coffee to avoid waste <strong>and</strong> us<strong>in</strong>g<br />
refill packs to m<strong>in</strong>imise the need for glass jars. The site also<br />
offers advice for sav<strong>in</strong>g energy <strong>and</strong> water, <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g only<br />
boil<strong>in</strong>g as much water as is needed, <strong>and</strong> completely fill<strong>in</strong>g the<br />
dishwasher before us<strong>in</strong>g it.<br />
Our own employees are consumers too, <strong>and</strong> the <strong>in</strong>ternal<br />
campaign ‘I’m do<strong>in</strong>g it’ enc<strong>our</strong>ages <strong>our</strong> staff around the world<br />
to recycle water bottles.<br />

We also support healthy hydration by donat<strong>in</strong>g bottled water<br />
to those <strong>in</strong> need dur<strong>in</strong>g heatwaves:<br />
• <strong>Nestlé</strong> Waters Canada donated 300 000 bottles of water to<br />
Engage <strong>and</strong> Change’s <strong>2015</strong> Project Water <strong>in</strong>itiative, to be<br />
distributed among those liv<strong>in</strong>g on the streets of Toronto at<br />
risk from dehydration dur<strong>in</strong>g the summer months. S<strong>in</strong>ce<br />
2006, we have donated more than 2.1 million bottles of<br />
water to the organisation;<br />
• In Pakistan, the summer heatwave <strong>in</strong> S<strong>in</strong>dh caused more<br />
than 1000 fatalities <strong>and</strong> around 40 000 people are estimated<br />
to have suffered from heatstroke. In June <strong>2015</strong>, <strong>Nestlé</strong><br />
Pakistan donated 80 000 litres of water, to be distributed<br />
across Karachi by the National Disaster Management<br />
Authority; <strong>and</strong><br />
• Dur<strong>in</strong>g the heatwave <strong>in</strong> France dur<strong>in</strong>g the summer of <strong>2015</strong>,<br />
a consignment of 30 000 bottles of water was donated to<br />
the Samusocial on behalf of the French Federation of<br />
Bottled Waters, of which <strong>Nestlé</strong> Waters is the president.<br />
