In April <strong>2015</strong>, <strong>Nestlé</strong> USA announced that all of its 23 factories<br />

– spann<strong>in</strong>g confectionery, dairy, frozen <strong>and</strong> refrigerated meals,<br />

ice cream, bak<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>gredients <strong>and</strong> beverages – are l<strong>and</strong>fill-free,<br />

contribut<strong>in</strong>g zero waste for disposal. This important milestone<br />

supports <strong>Nestlé</strong> USA’s commitment to environmentally<br />

susta<strong>in</strong>able bus<strong>in</strong>ess practices.<br />

As part of this effort, <strong>Nestlé</strong> USA is cont<strong>in</strong>ually look<strong>in</strong>g for<br />

new ways to reuse, recycle <strong>and</strong> recover energy when dispos<strong>in</strong>g<br />

of manufactur<strong>in</strong>g by-products. The company’s current efforts<br />

<strong>in</strong>clude compost<strong>in</strong>g, recycl<strong>in</strong>g, energy production <strong>and</strong> creat<strong>in</strong>g<br />

safe products for animal feed.<br />

Employees also engage <strong>in</strong> recycl<strong>in</strong>g programmes <strong>and</strong><br />

partnerships with third parties that dispose of manufactur<strong>in</strong>g<br />

by-products <strong>in</strong> l<strong>in</strong>e with <strong>our</strong> environmental susta<strong>in</strong>ability<br />

On the outskirts of Newcastle upon Tyne <strong>in</strong> the UK, <strong>Nestlé</strong>’s<br />

factory <strong>in</strong> Fawdon has achieved zero waste to l<strong>and</strong>fill by<br />

POWER PART OF THE FACTORY<br />

This is an especially noteworthy achievement given<br />

the breadth <strong>and</strong> complexity of <strong>our</strong> manufactur<strong>in</strong>g<br />

operations. We are committed to work<strong>in</strong>g with<br />

<strong>our</strong> employees to ensure <strong>our</strong> factories rema<strong>in</strong><br />

l<strong>and</strong>fill-free <strong>and</strong> are striv<strong>in</strong>g for new ways to reduce<br />

<strong>our</strong> environmental impact at each stage of the<br />

product lifecycle.”<br />

TO POWER<br />

THE FACTORY<br />

In almost all the countries where we have operations,<br />

alternatives to l<strong>and</strong>fill or <strong>in</strong>c<strong>in</strong>eration without energy recovery<br />

exist but, <strong>in</strong> many locations, the <strong>in</strong>frastructure to make it<br />

possible is <strong>in</strong>sufficiently developed. This makes it challeng<strong>in</strong>g<br />

to achieve <strong>our</strong> ambition of zero waste for disposal at every site.<br />

Nonetheless, hav<strong>in</strong>g exceeded <strong>our</strong> <strong>2015</strong> goal to achieve zero<br />

waste <strong>in</strong> 10% of <strong>Nestlé</strong> factories two years early, we have now<br />

set <strong>our</strong>selves a new stretch<strong>in</strong>g objective: to achieve zero waste<br />

for disposal <strong>in</strong> all sites by 2020.<br />
