conduct a similar assessment of <strong>our</strong> social impacts. A report<br />
of the f<strong>in</strong>d<strong>in</strong>gs, Measur<strong>in</strong>g <strong>Value</strong> – Towards New Metrics <strong>and</strong><br />
Methods, was prepared for us by Quantis <strong>and</strong> Groupe AGÉCO<br />
<strong>and</strong> made available to develop underst<strong>and</strong><strong>in</strong>g of the different<br />
means <strong>and</strong> reasons for carry<strong>in</strong>g out impact valuation <strong>and</strong> to<br />
enc<strong>our</strong>age debate on align<strong>in</strong>g natural <strong>and</strong> social capital<br />
valuation methodologies. We have made this report available<br />
to <strong>in</strong>terested parties.<br />
The research also enables us to contribute more fully to<br />
<strong>in</strong>ternational <strong>in</strong>itiatives for develop<strong>in</strong>g protocols on natural <strong>and</strong><br />
social capital. In July 2014, the Natural Capital Coalition<br />
selected two consortia to develop the Natural Capital Protocol,<br />
a global, multi-stakeholder platform to help organisations<br />
underst<strong>and</strong>, measure <strong>and</strong> value their impacts <strong>and</strong><br />
dependencies on the natural environment. One consortium,<br />
led by the WBCSD, is collat<strong>in</strong>g exist<strong>in</strong>g methodologies,<br />
systems <strong>and</strong> ideas <strong>in</strong>to a s<strong>in</strong>gle measurement <strong>and</strong> valuation<br />
framework, while a second, parallel group, managed by the<br />
IUCN, is design<strong>in</strong>g ways to test the protocol <strong>and</strong> develop<strong>in</strong>g<br />
guidance for two sectors, <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g the food <strong>and</strong> beverage<br />
<strong>in</strong>dustry. <strong>Nestlé</strong> has contributed to the technical work<strong>in</strong>g<br />
group develop<strong>in</strong>g the protocol, <strong>and</strong> is one of 10 companies<br />
that has tested the first draft. Dur<strong>in</strong>g <strong>2015</strong>, the WBCSD<br />
<strong>in</strong>itiated work on the development of a Social Capital Protocol,<br />
<strong>in</strong> which we participated.<br />
Get Better with Nature<br />
Research conducted by M<strong>in</strong>d, a mental health charity <strong>in</strong> the<br />
UK, has revealed that 90% of people reported improvements <strong>in</strong><br />
self-esteem follow<strong>in</strong>g regular walks outdoors. A 2014 survey<br />
by <strong>Nestlé</strong> Waters <strong>and</strong> the Derbyshire Wildlife Trust <strong>in</strong> the UK<br />
showed that while 93% of local residents near <strong>our</strong> Buxton site<br />
underst<strong>and</strong> the value of nature to <strong>society</strong> <strong>and</strong> health, nearly<br />
two-thirds (64%) th<strong>in</strong>k that today’s younger generation don’t<br />
appreciate this relationship as much. That’s why we launched<br />
‘Get Better with Nature’, a collaborative, long-term campaign<br />
to educate the public about the benefits nature can br<strong>in</strong>g to <strong>our</strong><br />
everyday lives.<br />
We are work<strong>in</strong>g with three schools <strong>and</strong> three community<br />
wellbe<strong>in</strong>g organisations <strong>in</strong> Derbyshire, where we have held<br />
f<strong>our</strong> school activities, six Forest School sessions <strong>and</strong> eight<br />
wellbe<strong>in</strong>g activities for adults. We have also sponsored the<br />
Derbyshire Wildlife Trust’s Veteran Tree programme <strong>and</strong> held<br />
a tree seed collection day, supported by students from the<br />
University of Derby.<br />
Twenty-one <strong>Nestlé</strong> Waters UK employees (just over 10%)<br />
also took part <strong>in</strong> local Days of Action <strong>in</strong> Slough <strong>and</strong> Watford<br />
dur<strong>in</strong>g the year. Work<strong>in</strong>g alongside Wildlife Trust supporters,<br />
local schoolchildren <strong>and</strong> members of the community, these<br />
conservation activities focused on water <strong>in</strong> the environment.<br />
Further sessions are planned for 2016.<br />
The scheme was extended to two additional Wildlife Trusts<br />
– Berkshire, Buck<strong>in</strong>ghamshire <strong>and</strong> Oxfordshire Wildlife Trust,<br />
<strong>and</strong> Hertfordshire <strong>and</strong> Middlesex Wildlife Trust – <strong>in</strong> <strong>2015</strong>.<br />
Backed by press releases, news articles, radio <strong>in</strong>terviews <strong>and</strong><br />
social media activity, the campaign is now set to be rolled out<br />
across the country.<br />

ensure that nationwide steps are be<strong>in</strong>g taken to<br />
protect nature, promote water stewardship <strong>and</strong><br />
highlight the benefits the natural world br<strong>in</strong>gs to<br />
<strong>our</strong> health <strong>and</strong> wellbe<strong>in</strong>g.”<br />
