Child lab<strong>our</strong><br />
<strong>Nestlé</strong> is firmly opposed to all forms of child exploitation. We are committed to prevent<strong>in</strong>g <strong>and</strong> elim<strong>in</strong>at<strong>in</strong>g child lab<strong>our</strong><br />
wherever it occurs <strong>in</strong> <strong>our</strong> supply cha<strong>in</strong>. To achieve this, we work with a range of different stakeholders to develop <strong>and</strong><br />
implement mean<strong>in</strong>gful solutions. Together, we have set up mechanisms to provide comprehensive monitor<strong>in</strong>g,<br />
implemented effective remediation activities <strong>and</strong> provided targeted support where needed to local communities.<br />
Apply<strong>in</strong>g a comprehensive strategy<br />
Our <strong>Nestlé</strong> Corporate Bus<strong>in</strong>ess Pr<strong>in</strong>ciples clearly state <strong>our</strong><br />
opposition to all forms of child exploitation, <strong>and</strong> uphold the<br />
elim<strong>in</strong>ation of forced <strong>and</strong> compulsory lab<strong>our</strong>. In addition, the<br />
<strong>Nestlé</strong> Supplier Code <strong>in</strong>cludes a strict prohibition on child<br />
lab<strong>our</strong> <strong>and</strong> requires that all <strong>our</strong> direct (Tier 1) suppliers are<br />
<strong>in</strong>dependently audited. It builds upon def<strong>in</strong>itions from the ILO,<br />
<strong>Nestlé</strong>’s Corporate Bus<strong>in</strong>ess Pr<strong>in</strong>ciples <strong>and</strong> experiences from<br />
<strong>Nestlé</strong>’s own operations.<br />
Our commitment<br />
Elim<strong>in</strong>ate child lab<strong>our</strong> <strong>in</strong> key categories<br />
In <strong>2015</strong>, we ma<strong>in</strong>ta<strong>in</strong>ed <strong>our</strong> commitment to fight child lab<strong>our</strong><br />
as a member of the Child Lab<strong>our</strong> Platform. The <strong>Nestlé</strong><br />
Commitment on Child Lab<strong>our</strong> <strong>in</strong> Agricultural Supply Cha<strong>in</strong>s<br />
– drawn up <strong>in</strong> consultation with expert external stakeholders,<br />
<strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g the FLA, the DIHR <strong>and</strong> the International Cocoa<br />
Initiative (ICI) – is <strong>our</strong> strategy to tackle child lab<strong>our</strong> <strong>in</strong><br />
agricultural supply cha<strong>in</strong>s. Key elements of the strategy, which<br />
covers suppliers <strong>in</strong> all tiers of <strong>Nestlé</strong>’s raw material supply<br />
cha<strong>in</strong>s, <strong>in</strong>clude:<br />
• Oversight: we operate a Child Lab<strong>our</strong> <strong>and</strong> Women’s<br />
Empowerment Steer<strong>in</strong>g Group, chaired by Executive Board<br />
member Magdi Batato, to identify measures, take decisions<br />
<strong>and</strong> monitor progress;<br />
• Responsibility for management of the issue: overall<br />
management responsibility by a named bus<strong>in</strong>ess unit for<br />
each high-risk category of raw material, <strong>and</strong> management<br />
of the situation at the country level;<br />
• Target<strong>in</strong>g high-risk commodities <strong>and</strong> children at risk:<br />
assessment of the risk to children’s rights, which <strong>in</strong>clude<br />
protection from economic exploitation <strong>and</strong> work that may<br />
be dangerous to their health, safety or morals <strong>and</strong> that may<br />
h<strong>in</strong>der their development or impede their access to<br />
education; a clear strategy to address the issue <strong>and</strong> its root<br />
causes, a focus on vulnerable groups (the children of<br />
migrant workers, girls, orphans <strong>and</strong> trafficked children),<br />
proactive work with suppliers, <strong>and</strong> term<strong>in</strong>ation of all<br />
bus<strong>in</strong>ess with suppliers unwill<strong>in</strong>g or unable to comply;<br />
• Improv<strong>in</strong>g underst<strong>and</strong><strong>in</strong>g <strong>and</strong> competence: engag<strong>in</strong>g<br />
specialist partners, provid<strong>in</strong>g staff tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g <strong>and</strong> guidel<strong>in</strong>es to<br />
tackle child lab<strong>our</strong>, <strong>and</strong> dialogue with civil <strong>society</strong><br />
organisations; <strong>and</strong><br />
• Deliver<strong>in</strong>g transparency: communicat<strong>in</strong>g <strong>our</strong><br />
<strong>commitments</strong> to suppliers <strong>and</strong> stakeholders, operat<strong>in</strong>g a<br />
compla<strong>in</strong>ts mechanism, monitor<strong>in</strong>g progress, <strong>and</strong> report<strong>in</strong>g<br />
on actions <strong>and</strong> progress.<br />
Our objectives<br />
By <strong>2015</strong> – Complete action plans to reduce child lab<strong>our</strong><br />
<strong>in</strong> <strong>our</strong> cocoa, hazelnut <strong>and</strong> vanilla supply cha<strong>in</strong>s, with<br />
60 000 farmers tra<strong>in</strong>ed on child work/lab<strong>our</strong> practices,<br />
60 schools built or renovated <strong>and</strong> 80% of co-operatives<br />
covered by a child lab<strong>our</strong> monitor<strong>in</strong>g <strong>and</strong> remediation<br />
system (100% by 2016).<br />
By 2018 – Child lab<strong>our</strong> risk assessments done for all<br />
12 high-priority categories of raw <strong>in</strong>gredients <strong>and</strong><br />
responsible s<strong>our</strong>c<strong>in</strong>g strategies deployed to monitor <strong>and</strong><br />
mitigate occurrences of child lab<strong>our</strong>.<br />
While <strong>our</strong> new objective for child lab<strong>our</strong> risk assessments<br />
covers all 12 high-priority categories, child lab<strong>our</strong> has been<br />
identified as a particular issue <strong>in</strong> <strong>our</strong> hazelnut, vanilla <strong>and</strong><br />
cocoa supply cha<strong>in</strong>s. With low levels of <strong>in</strong>come – about USD 2<br />
(CHF 1.98) a day – vanilla farmers cannot always meet their<br />
basic needs, <strong>and</strong> often turn to children (usually from with<strong>in</strong> the<br />
family unit) to help with farm<strong>in</strong>g. Child lab<strong>our</strong> <strong>in</strong> <strong>our</strong> cocoa<br />
supply cha<strong>in</strong> is a complex issue <strong>and</strong> gather<strong>in</strong>g reliable<br />
evidence about attitudes <strong>and</strong> perceptions, as well as what’s<br />
happen<strong>in</strong>g on the ground, is vital, but challeng<strong>in</strong>g. Therefore,<br />
we <strong>in</strong>vited the FLA to help us exam<strong>in</strong>e <strong>our</strong> cocoa supply cha<strong>in</strong><br />
<strong>in</strong> Côte d’Ivoire, where child lab<strong>our</strong> is still a reality. The FLA<br />
believes that the <strong>Nestlé</strong> Cocoa Plan <strong>and</strong> <strong>our</strong> participation <strong>in</strong><br />
other <strong>in</strong>itiatives provides a good foundation, but also sees a<br />
need for <strong>in</strong>creased monitor<strong>in</strong>g <strong>and</strong> accountability throughout<br />
the various tiers of the supply cha<strong>in</strong>.<br />
Our priority categories of raw material <strong>and</strong> countries of<br />
orig<strong>in</strong> are currently cocoa <strong>in</strong> Côte d’Ivoire, hazelnuts <strong>in</strong> Turkey<br />
<strong>and</strong> vanilla <strong>in</strong> Madagascar. We regularly review priority areas<br />
to ensure we are focus<strong>in</strong>g on those countries <strong>and</strong> supply<br />
cha<strong>in</strong>s most at risk. Where cases of child lab<strong>our</strong> are found, we<br />
expect suppliers to consider each <strong>in</strong>stance on an <strong>in</strong>dividual<br />
basis <strong>and</strong> always seek to solve the problem <strong>in</strong> the best <strong>in</strong>terest<br />
of the child or children <strong>in</strong>volved. To help suppliers <strong>in</strong> their<br />
assessments, we have developed an onl<strong>in</strong>e e-learn<strong>in</strong>g tool to<br />
create greater awareness about which situations constitute<br />
child lab<strong>our</strong> <strong>and</strong> how best to counteract it.<br />
We have also <strong>in</strong>troduced a new objective specifically to<br />
address the issue of child lab<strong>our</strong> <strong>in</strong> the vanilla supply cha<strong>in</strong>.<br />
