One <strong>in</strong>itiative that supports dermatology activities that have a<br />

positive social impact is the SKIN PACT programme. Initiated by<br />

Galderma, with the support of the International League of<br />

Dermatological Societies, SKIN PACT aims to <strong>in</strong>spire<br />

dermatologists <strong>and</strong> other doctors to develop <strong>and</strong> help implement<br />

voluntary projects that support a susta<strong>in</strong>able dermatology<br />

community. At the <strong>2015</strong> SKIN PACT Awards ceremony, which had<br />

the double theme of ‘Community Leadership’ <strong>and</strong> ‘Excellence <strong>in</strong><br />

Education’, f<strong>our</strong> projects were selected out of an <strong>in</strong>itial 100. The<br />

w<strong>in</strong>n<strong>in</strong>g projects, which each received or are due to receive a<br />

USD 15 000 (CHF 14 850) grant, came from Taiwan, Germany,<br />

Colombia <strong>and</strong> Italy.<br />

Build<strong>in</strong>g the SHIELD network<br />

around the globe<br />

In response to the expected rise <strong>in</strong> sk<strong>in</strong> health needs <strong>in</strong> a<br />

rapidly grow<strong>in</strong>g age<strong>in</strong>g population, <strong>Nestlé</strong> Sk<strong>in</strong> Health has<br />

started to establish a global network of <strong>in</strong>novation hubs to<br />

advance the next generation of sk<strong>in</strong> health. Known as <strong>Nestlé</strong><br />

Sk<strong>in</strong> Health Investigation, Education <strong>and</strong> Longevity<br />

Development (SHIELD) centres, this global <strong>in</strong>novation network<br />

will be built to foster breakthroughs <strong>and</strong> collaboration <strong>in</strong> sk<strong>in</strong><br />

health through medical <strong>in</strong>vestigation, education <strong>and</strong><br />

applications related to the convergence of technologies <strong>and</strong><br />

bio<strong>in</strong>formatics. The first SHIELD centre, <strong>in</strong> New York, USA, will<br />

be opened <strong>in</strong> early 2016.<br />

With a view to support<strong>in</strong>g Ch<strong>in</strong>a’s elderly population –<br />

predicted to form at least 17% of its population by 2020 –<br />

<strong>Nestlé</strong> Sk<strong>in</strong> Health also announced <strong>in</strong> <strong>2015</strong> that it will open a<br />

SHIELD centre <strong>in</strong> Shanghai, establish<strong>in</strong>g Ch<strong>in</strong>a as a key pillar of<br />

<strong>Nestlé</strong> Sk<strong>in</strong> Health’s global <strong>in</strong>itiative. New York <strong>and</strong> Shanghai<br />

will be followed by other location across the world <strong>in</strong> the future.<br />

The SHIELD <strong>in</strong>itiative is aligned with the needs identified by<br />

the 2014 Manchester Summit on Active Age<strong>in</strong>g <strong>and</strong> Healthy<br />

Sk<strong>in</strong>, which called for action <strong>and</strong> <strong>in</strong>novation <strong>in</strong> sk<strong>in</strong> health as a<br />

path to wellness, social value <strong>and</strong> economic growth.<br />
