The <strong>Nestlé</strong> Supplier Code sits at the heart of every bus<strong>in</strong>ess<br />
relationship with <strong>our</strong> suppliers. The code reflects <strong>our</strong><br />
commitment to conduct<strong>in</strong>g <strong>our</strong> bus<strong>in</strong>ess activities <strong>in</strong> full<br />
compliance with applicable laws, <strong>and</strong> to be<strong>in</strong>g guided by<br />
<strong>in</strong>tegrity <strong>and</strong> honesty. It sets out the non-negotiable m<strong>in</strong>imum<br />
st<strong>and</strong>ards <strong>and</strong> best practices that we require <strong>our</strong> suppliers <strong>and</strong><br />
their own suppliers – right down to the <strong>in</strong>dividual farm level –<br />
to respect <strong>and</strong> adhere to when do<strong>in</strong>g bus<strong>in</strong>ess with us. Simple<br />
pictorial versions of the code are made available to overcome<br />
variations <strong>in</strong> language <strong>and</strong> literacy levels.<br />
Implementation of the Supplier Code’s requirements is<br />
embedded <strong>in</strong>to <strong>our</strong> <strong>in</strong>ternal procurement procedures <strong>and</strong><br />
objectives, us<strong>in</strong>g approaches that are tailored to the nature<br />
of the supply cha<strong>in</strong>, the type of supplier <strong>and</strong> <strong>our</strong> commercial<br />
relationship with them. However, as each supply cha<strong>in</strong> has<br />
its own characteristics <strong>and</strong> issues, we’ve also developed the<br />
<strong>Nestlé</strong> Responsible S<strong>our</strong>c<strong>in</strong>g Guidel<strong>in</strong>e (RSG), along with<br />
category-specific requirements for <strong>our</strong> priority <strong>in</strong>gredients <strong>and</strong><br />
materials. The guidel<strong>in</strong>e helps <strong>our</strong> suppliers improve practices,<br />
where necessary, at farm or plantation level, with <strong>Nestlé</strong>’s<br />
requirements often go<strong>in</strong>g beyond legal or <strong>in</strong>ternational<br />
requirements.<br />
The guidel<strong>in</strong>e follows f<strong>our</strong> general pr<strong>in</strong>ciples:<br />
• Suppliers are expected to engage <strong>in</strong> a process of<br />
cont<strong>in</strong>uous improvement;<br />
• Suppliers should conduct their bus<strong>in</strong>ess with <strong>Nestlé</strong> <strong>in</strong> an<br />
open <strong>and</strong> transparent way;<br />
• <strong>Nestlé</strong> will support suppliers not yet able to comply with all<br />
aspects of the RSG, but who are committed to becom<strong>in</strong>g<br />
compliant over time <strong>and</strong> demonstrate cont<strong>in</strong>uous, tangible<br />
progress; <strong>and</strong><br />
• Suppliers are to cont<strong>in</strong>uously monitor <strong>and</strong> verify their<br />
performance <strong>and</strong> progress, comply<strong>in</strong>g with <strong>in</strong>dependent<br />
assessment where necessary.<br />
Our policies <strong>and</strong> st<strong>and</strong>ards<br />
Rural development is one of three priority areas for <strong>our</strong><br />
bus<strong>in</strong>ess, as highlighted <strong>in</strong> the <strong>Nestlé</strong> Corporate Bus<strong>in</strong>ess<br />
Pr<strong>in</strong>ciples, which lay the foundations for everyth<strong>in</strong>g we do.<br />
The relevant pr<strong>in</strong>ciple states:<br />
We contribute to improvements <strong>in</strong> agricultural<br />
production, the social <strong>and</strong> economic status<br />
of farmers, rural communities <strong>and</strong> <strong>in</strong><br />
production systems to make them more<br />
environmentally susta<strong>in</strong>able.”<br />
<strong>Nestlé</strong>’s Corporate Bus<strong>in</strong>ess Pr<strong>in</strong>ciples<br />
Our ambitions to support rural development are set out <strong>in</strong> the<br />
<strong>Nestlé</strong> Commitment on Rural Development, <strong>and</strong> are consistent<br />
with the UN Susta<strong>in</strong>able Development Goals (also known as<br />
the Global Goals) on poverty <strong>and</strong> hunger, nutrition, education,<br />
gender equality <strong>and</strong> environmental susta<strong>in</strong>ability.<br />
In addition, the <strong>Nestlé</strong> Commitment on the Responsible Use<br />
of Materials from Agricultural Orig<strong>in</strong> applies to the upstream<br />
value cha<strong>in</strong> back to the primary production level. As part of<br />
<strong>our</strong> drive to ‘remove the worst, promote the best <strong>and</strong> improve<br />
the rest’, its pr<strong>in</strong>ciples span cont<strong>in</strong>uous improvement,<br />
transparency along the value cha<strong>in</strong>, supplier accountability <strong>and</strong><br />
support, <strong>and</strong> credible verification.<br />
The <strong>Nestlé</strong> Supplier Code sets out the non-negotiable<br />
m<strong>in</strong>imum st<strong>and</strong>ards <strong>and</strong> best practices that we require <strong>our</strong><br />
suppliers <strong>and</strong> their own suppliers – right down to the <strong>in</strong>dividual<br />
farm level – to respect <strong>and</strong> adhere to when do<strong>in</strong>g bus<strong>in</strong>ess<br />
with us. Implementation of the Supplier Code’s requirements<br />
is embedded <strong>in</strong>to <strong>our</strong> <strong>in</strong>ternal procurement procedures <strong>and</strong><br />
objectives. In addition, the <strong>Nestlé</strong> RSG helps <strong>our</strong> suppliers to<br />
improve practices, where necessary, at farm or plantation<br />
level, <strong>and</strong> ensure they meet or exceed <strong>in</strong>ternationally<br />
recognised st<strong>and</strong>ards.<br />
To ma<strong>in</strong>ta<strong>in</strong> best practice, all <strong>our</strong> teams are guided by a<br />
series of policies, procedures <strong>and</strong> documents, <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g:<br />
• The <strong>Nestlé</strong> Commitment on Rural Development;<br />
• The <strong>Nestlé</strong> Supplier Code;<br />
• <strong>Nestlé</strong>’s Responsible S<strong>our</strong>c<strong>in</strong>g Guidel<strong>in</strong>e;<br />
• The <strong>Nestlé</strong> Commitment on Natural Capital;<br />
• The <strong>Nestlé</strong> Commitment on the Responsible Use of<br />
Materials from Agricultural Orig<strong>in</strong>;<br />
• The <strong>Nestlé</strong> Commitment on Farm Animal Welfare;<br />
• The <strong>Nestlé</strong> Commitment on L<strong>and</strong> & L<strong>and</strong> Rights <strong>in</strong><br />
Agricultural Supply Cha<strong>in</strong>s;<br />
• The <strong>Nestlé</strong> Commitment on Child Lab<strong>our</strong> <strong>in</strong> Agricultural<br />
Supply Cha<strong>in</strong>s;<br />
• The <strong>Nestlé</strong> Commitment to reduce food loss <strong>and</strong> waste; <strong>and</strong><br />
• The <strong>Nestlé</strong> Commitment on Lab<strong>our</strong> Rights <strong>in</strong> Agricultural<br />
Supply Cha<strong>in</strong>s.<br />
Our commitment documents, derived from these policies <strong>and</strong><br />
procedures, provide accessible <strong>in</strong>formation on the specific<br />
pledges we have made about key issues, such as farm animal<br />
welfare <strong>and</strong> lab<strong>our</strong> rights.<br />
