to 4:30. 30 min lunch. She accomplished a lot <strong>and</strong> taught me<br />

a lot. Main project: Creating a keyword for each soybean<br />

variety (SBV) introduced before 1924, then designing<br />

a keyword check, running it, fi nding the earliest record<br />

containing that keyword, <strong>and</strong> fi lling in a form for each<br />

variety. We now have 109 SBV- keywords. The earliest is<br />

1891. Justine is the fi rst Soyfoods <strong>Center</strong> intern who looks<br />

fi rst to the Internet/Web for the information she desires. She<br />

is very skilled at using it, <strong>and</strong> does some nice projects for SC<br />

at her home.<br />

16A. Cheryl Ishida (mother), Christopher, <strong>and</strong> Catherine<br />

do volunteer work at Soyfoods <strong>Center</strong> <strong>and</strong> Cal Library from<br />

time to time. Two color photos (May 1998) show the three<br />

st<strong>and</strong>ing by trunk <strong>of</strong> liquid amber tree near Soyfoods <strong>Center</strong><br />

driveway.<br />

3 hours/week since Sept. 30, 1999. Excellent typist. Summer:<br />

19. 2000/09. Alison Fruman. Last day 2001 Jan. 18.<br />

Checking all books in SC bookshelves–only.<br />

20. 2000/10. Olga Kochan. Campolinda. A wonderful<br />

person. Start Oct. 7. One day/week (Sun.) for 3 hours, 11-<br />

2:00. During summer 2001 works Sat. <strong>and</strong> Sun. 3 hours<br />

each. 2001 Jan. 1, rate increase to: $10.50. 2001 Sept. 1. Rate<br />

increase to $12.00. After 2001 Sept. 11 attack I am unable to<br />

fi nd her replacement, so she very kindly continues on for 9<br />

more months, until 26 May 2002, start <strong>of</strong> summer.<br />

21. 2001/01. Michelle Leung. Takes Alison’s place<br />

checking SC books.<br />

22. 2001/05 Ryan Browne, Freshman at Harvard Univ.<br />

Works one day/week. Extremely talented <strong>and</strong> nice. $12/hour.<br />

Earns most money teaching tennis each day. Mom is Lydia.<br />

22a. 2001/09 to 2002/05. Olga Kochan–see above.<br />

Then from May 2002 to Aug. 2003 she helps SC greatly <strong>and</strong><br />

generously to fi nd early Russian-language documents <strong>and</strong><br />

to translate them into English. Then she enters college as a<br />

freshman at U.C. Berkeley (Cal).<br />

23. 2002/05. Loren Clive. Speaks good French. Works<br />

one day a week, 3 hours a day. Then fi rst summer with no<br />

intern.<br />

24. 2002/09. Marina Li. She called to volunteer the very<br />

day I was about to send out Help Wanted ads. Works one day<br />

a week. Last day 2003 May 23. Very creative, fi ne values.<br />

Has diffi culty with computer work. For rest <strong>of</strong> 2003 helps<br />

from time to time with sorting, then have lunch together.<br />

25. 2003/10. Loren Clive. One day a week for 7 hours/<br />

day. $13/hour. First 90 min is clearing Bill’s soy in-box. Rest<br />

<strong>of</strong> time is for entering records <strong>and</strong> abstracts from Vegetarian<br />

Messenger, Jan. 1887-March 1889.<br />

26. Rowyn McDonald, a Stanford student. 2004 June<br />

15 to Sept. 3. She was instrumental in our starting to publish<br />

books on the Web <strong>and</strong> in starting to learn Adobe PageMaker.<br />

She reformatted all the chapters in our <strong>History</strong> <strong>of</strong> Soybeans<br />

<strong>and</strong> Soyfoods book <strong>and</strong> sent them to Paul <strong>and</strong> Gail King,<br />

who put them on the Web. Her work this summer has been<br />

outst<strong>and</strong>ing. She has an extraordinary intellect, is a fast<br />

learner, has excellent focus <strong>and</strong> concentration, is a fast typist,<br />

accomplishes a great deal each day, makes few mistakes, <strong>and</strong><br />

has become very skilled at asking questions <strong>and</strong> receiving<br />

the answers in a selfl ess, clear way. She was a gift from God,<br />

the perfect match for the job. Also, I learned more from her<br />

about using computers (esp. the Web <strong>and</strong> WinWord) than I<br />

have from any other intern.<br />

27. Casey Brodsky. 2007 Oct. 26 to 2008 June 6.<br />

Sophomore at Campolinda. Four main projects: (1) Make a<br />

record for every article in Time magazine that mentions t<strong>of</strong>u.<br />

I notice how Time has mostly negative things to say about<br />

this new, healthy food; protecting the status quo. (2) Add<br />

the exact date (to the nearest day) to thous<strong>and</strong>s <strong>of</strong> records <strong>of</strong><br />

various types. Upgrading the YR fi eld is the main reason we<br />

changed a record number <strong>of</strong> BIBLIO records (22,159) this<br />

year. (3) Add info to the Abstract fi eld for about an hour each<br />

Friday. (4) Complete the AD fi eld for hundreds <strong>of</strong> letters in<br />

our library; e.g., “Typed, with signature on letterhead.” She<br />

also found that many letters have been misplaced.<br />

28. Hanna Woodman. 2008 June 17 to July 16.<br />

Sophomore at Acalanes. She is a fast <strong>and</strong> accurate typist, <strong>and</strong><br />

likes typing projects, so (1) She typed in many abstracts <strong>and</strong><br />

contents. (2) Completed the AD fi eld for hundreds <strong>of</strong> letters<br />

in our library; e.g., “Typed, with signature on letterhead.”<br />

She also found that many letters have been misplaced. (3)<br />

Entered every chapter with heads for the AOCS monograph<br />

on the soybean. (4) Added missing exact dates in the AD<br />

fi eld. (5) Sorted documents in boxes for WRS to fi le. (6)<br />

Highlighted reference sheets in preparation for Bill’s trips to<br />

Cal libraries.<br />

29. Elizabeth Hawkins. 2008 July 22 to Aug. 21. Senior<br />

at Campolinda. Main projects–to enter: (1) <strong>Natto</strong> book<br />

bibliography by Hesseltine <strong>and</strong> Kato. (2) Lots <strong>of</strong> abstracts<br />

<strong>and</strong> quotations. (3) Soybean in Asia proceedings + A <strong>and</strong> B<br />

level heads. (4) All unentered articles from Bluebook Update<br />

(Golbitz). (5) Mian Riaz book on soy. (5) Oak Smith’s<br />

letters. When I am gone she always works on my computer.<br />

30. Michelle So. 2008 Oct. 9.<br />

31. Talat Mirmalek 2009 Jan/Feb. Sorting. “Talat” in<br />

Farsi means “rays <strong>of</strong> the sun.” Being a young Muslim lady,<br />

she was not allowed to work here unless her sister (Taliah) or<br />

father were in the same room with her.<br />
