The aim of this study is to describe gonadal morphology of Abudefduf saxatilis, family Pomacentridae (Linnaeus, 1758). A total of 73 individuals were collected between April 2002 and February 2003 at four station along the São Sebastião Channel in Southeastern Brazilian coast. Qualitative indicators used to assess reproduction were the macroscopic and microscopic evaluation of gonadal tissue. Gonads of 30 sub-sample fish were removed and preserved in 10% buffered formaline. The gonads were dehydrated, cleared in xylene, embedded in paraffin, sectioned at 5 mm and stained in haematoxylin-eosin for histological analysis. Macroscopic classification identified females (63%), males (30%) but the sex of 7% was non-identified. Subsequent histology revealed 10% ovaries (no discernable testicular tissue) and 23% testis, whereas 67% were transitional individuals.The transition condition was defined by the simultaneous presence of male germinal tissues with apparently normally developing ovary tissue, and the formation of longitudinal channels constituting peripheral sperm sinus within the gonad wall (empty or sperm filled). Evidence of degeneration of oogenic tissues and proliferation of male sex cells in various stages of development occur concomitantly. During the process of sex reversal, a high proportion of atretic oocytes and melano-macrophage centers were usually found. The results seem to be also consistent with the presence of secondary males who showed evidence of recent sexual transition by presence of either atretic structures or incompletely formed testicular tissue, suggestive of recent sex change from female to male. The presence of such features suggest that Abudefduf saxatillis is a sequential hermaphrodite that can exhibits diandric protogyny. 69 Sesión 1: Estrategias reproductivas de organismos acuáticos.
