<strong>IBM</strong> <strong>Storage</strong> Software<br />

ADSTAR<br />
Wie im Artikel beschrieben, ist AdStaR das Akronym von<br />
„ADvanced STorage And Retrieval“ und wurde als Brandname<br />
eingeführt für die <strong>IBM</strong> <strong>Storage</strong> <strong>System</strong>s Division<br />
(<strong>IBM</strong> ADSTAR <strong>Storage</strong> <strong>System</strong>s Division). Grund für diese<br />
Umbenennung waren Gedankenspiele des damaligen <strong>IBM</strong><br />
Managements, <strong>IBM</strong> Divisionen als selbstständige Unternehmensteile<br />
auszugliedern und sie über eigene Warenzeichen<br />
zu individualisieren (siehe auch MagStaR). Diese Pläne<br />
wurden jedoch in der Folge nicht umgesetzt, aber das<br />
Warenzeichen ADSM blieb bis 1999.<br />
Das „Safeman“Logo hat der ehemalige <strong>IBM</strong> Grafik<br />
Designer Mike Welkley entworfen, der die Entstehungsgeschichte<br />
so beschreibt:<br />
Here‘s a little history on how the Safeman came about... I was<br />
working on the ADSM GUI back in 1993. Periodically we would<br />
bring in prospective customers to test the product and the software<br />
team asked if I would create a mouse pad that could be given to<br />
the customers as a complimentary gift. Given a blank canvas to<br />
create whatever I wanted for the design, I decided to create a<br />
cartoon character that represented ADSM <strong>Storage</strong>.<br />
Brandname und Identifikation –<br />

The mouse pad with the ADSM Safeman character on it, for<br />
whatever reason, never got printed. However, the ADSM Marketing<br />
team somehow got hold of the mouse pad design and wanted to<br />
print the character on buttons as a tradeshow giveaway. This was<br />
the first use of the character.<br />
Die ADSM V1.1Ankündigung bestand aus zwei unabhängigen<br />
Komponenten, einmal den Speichermanagementfunktionen<br />
für Datensicherung/Archivierung und zum anderen<br />
aus dem Datenzugriffsteil DAS (Data Access Services),<br />
das eigentlich mit dem Thema Datensicherung oder Speicher<br />
nichts zu tun hatte. Hier der Auszug aus dem Ankündigungsschreiben:<br />

<strong>IBM</strong> announces the availability of ADSTAR (TM) Distributed-<br />
<strong>Storage</strong> Manager Version 1 Release 1*. The ADSTAR Distributed<br />
<strong>Storage</strong> Manager provides storage management and data access<br />
capabilities. The storage management capabilities provide an<br />
automated, highly-reliable, high-performance, network-based<br />
backup and archive product for workstations and local area<br />
network (LAN) file servers. It consists of an MVS- or VM-based<br />
backup/archive server and backup/archive clients for DOS, OS/2<br />
(R), AIX (R) for RISC <strong>System</strong>/6000 (R), Microsoft Windows,<br />
Apple Macintosh, SPARC /Solaris, HP-UX, and Novell NetWare<br />
systems. The data access services (DAS) provide Distributed<br />
FileManager for OS/2 Version 2 and the Record Level Input/<br />
Output (RLIO) API. Distributed FileManager provides local or<br />
remote record level access for OS/2 Version 2 applications.<br />
