461. EIJKMAN, Christiaan - 9 June 1882 Leiden - 14 Aug. 1965 Oosterbeek.<br />

Veterinarian. Director of the slaughterhouse at Dordrecht 1915-1947. Ornithologist<br />

and mammalogist. Cousin of the discoverer of the cause of the Beri-beri<br />

disease. 1930-1947 Secretary of the "Club van Nederlandse Vogelkundigen".<br />

Author of "De Nederlandsche Vogels" (1936-1949 in 3 vols.) and of<br />

"De Nederlandsche Zoogdieren" (1937).<br />

Possessed a collection of mammals and birds, comprising nearly 80% of the<br />

<strong>Dutch</strong> fauna, all stuffed by himself. His first collection of stuffed birds<br />

was presented to the museum of the Nederlandsche Heidemaatschappij at Arnhern<br />

(ca. 1916). A second collection, as well as his collection of stuffed mammals,<br />

was presented to the Natural History Museum at Enschede (q.v.). Duplicates<br />

were presented to the Museum of Natural History at Rotterdam (q.v.).<br />

He possessed a collection of insects, that contained the collections of A.J.<br />

d'Ailly (q.v.), C. Dalen (q.v.), J.C.H. van Walcheren (q.v.) and C. van Lennep<br />

(q.v.). The collection was sold 14 Oct. 1861 seq. at Rotterdam by Burger<br />

& Schadie, notaries. Annotated catalogue in "Artis". Verloren (q,v.) bought<br />

the collections d'Ailly for Dfl, 1,460.--, the collection C. Dalen for Dfl,<br />

800.-- apart of the collection van Walcheren for Dfl. 1,170.--, Deyrolle,<br />

Paris, bought another part of the collections van Walcheren Dfl. 620.--. The<br />

original collection Eijndhoven and the Coleoptera of van Walcheren were<br />

bought by Deyro He (Paris) for Dfl. 300.--. The Orthoptera, Hemiptera and<br />

Neuroptera of van Walcheren carne in the RMNH. The collection of preparat.es<br />

of Schubart (Bombyx mori) carne in the possession of Groningen University.<br />

The old collection of van Lennep was dispersed among several collectors.<br />

According to a letter by Roepke, parts of the Eijndhoven collection were<br />

bought by Felder (father and son) at Vienna. Together with the Felder collection<br />

this material came in the possession of Tring. Sepp 1762-1860, VI,<br />

p. 15, 145, 154, 161; VII, p. III, 2, 13, 24, 84, 181, 209, 211; VIII, p. 4,<br />

13, 67, 132; AKL 1853, II, p. 18 (van Eijndhoven bought for Dfl. 1,200.-the<br />

collection Dalen); Horn & Kahle 1935-'37, p. 287; Gijzen 1938, p. 164 (3<br />

July 1861 the collection was presented to RMNH, but later on it was still<br />

auctioned).<br />
