who was much interested in it and made Vosmaer "Raad" (Councillor) between
1778 and 1783. Vosmaer described many of the animals under his care in his
work: Natuurkundige beschrijving eener uitmuntende Verzameling etc., Amsterdam
1766-1804 (also in French edition). They were mostly founded on animals
that had lived in the menageries (see het Loo), especially on "Ret Kleine
Loo" near 's-Gravenhage. The honours gradually bestowed on the author show
how his scientific importance increased. There can be found much more about
Vosmaer in the Koninklijk Huisarchief and in the archives of the Vosmaer
family at Leiden. Vosmaer often helped Meuschen (q.v.) in editing his catalogues
(see nr. 3 Oudaan 1766, which contains a Systema testaceorum of his
hand, p. 52, see alsop. 53-57); he edited parts III and IV of Seba's "Thesaurus"
(1734-1765), as is certain through letters between Vosmaer and van
Homrich in the family archives; the work of Renard: "Histoire des plus rares
curiosites de la Mer des Indes, 1754, was edited through his care. The sale
catalogue of his books, sold 17 March - 1 April 1800 in his house Hooge
Nieuwstraat, shows us the richness of his library, see esp. p. 86, nr. 367,
368 (earlier sales 1764 and 1765?), p. 88, nr. 388, p. 426, 427 (about his
cabinets). The Ms. catalogue which Vosmaer made of the sales of cabinets in
