Son of Jan Jacobsz. Swammerdam (q.v.). Being of a weak constitution he never
practised as a physictan. He devoted himself wholly to scientific investigations,
esp. on insects.
Though he lived with his father, he possessed a cabinet of his own, with
anatomical and entomological preparations. TI1e Grand Duke of Tuscany offered
Dfl. 12,000.-- for it, if he himself followed thither, but Swammerdam re··
fused (1668). When later on (1675-1676) he hoped to led a life of quietud,
he tried in vain to sell it. He had taken the resolution to sell his cabinet
in May 1680, but he died in February. Boerhaave in his preface to the "Biblia
Naturae" of Swamrnerdam (1737-1738, 2 vols,) says nothing about the cabinet.
Heiress was Margarita Volckers, wife of Dr, Med, Daniel de Hoest, but
Thevenot got the manuscripts. The catalogue of his cabinet was published as
an addition to Thevenot' s "Recueil de Voyages" (Paris 1681); so it is not
clear whether M. Volckers got the cabinet, moreover, his relation to her is
