Groningen. Up to 1811 lawyer at Groningen. From 1795 onwards Secretary of<br />

the Ommelanden. 1821-1831 substitute Judge, Later in his life historian and<br />

town-archivist. Unmarried, brother of Petrus Driessen (q.v.).<br />

Collection of fossils, stones, butterflies, in 1831 bequeathed to Univ. Groningen.<br />

411. DROUIN, Jean Baptiste - Sedan - buried 19 Jan. 1792 Maastricht. Lieutenant-Colonel<br />

in the French army.<br />

Possessed a collection of well-preserved milleporine coelenterates, Madreporia,<br />

Astroidea, Mollusca, Worms and Echinoidea and other remains of seacreatures<br />

from the St. Pietersberg and from the surroundings of Maastricht,<br />

all together ca. 600 species (van Marum 1790, p. 388). The collection also<br />

contained fragments of 2 lower jaws and an upper jaw of Mosasaurus hoffmanni,<br />

found 1766 in the St. Pietersberg (the oldest dated fragments of a Mosasaurus).<br />

These remainders are now in Paris. Casts of them are in Teylers<br />

Museum and in the Nat. Hist, Museum, Maastricht. Together with Th.J. Godding<br />

(q.v.) he possessed the greatest part of the collection of J.L. Hoffmann<br />

(q.v.). P. Camper visited the collection 1782 (see Kemp 1792). In 1784 the<br />

collection was bought by M, van Marum (q.v.) for the museum of Teylers foundation<br />

at Haarlem. It formed the basis of the Paleontological cabinet of the<br />
