The Rev. P, Benedictines of Merkelbeek took their bird-collection with them<br />

when they moved to Vaals in the years between 1960 and 1970. It has been<br />

used in writing an article on birds in Limburg. The collection has disappeared<br />

1026. METEREN, Emanuel van - 9 June 1535 Antwerp - 8 April 1612 London,<br />

Merchant. In 1550 he left for England, together with his father, the printer<br />

Jacob C, van Meteren. When visiting Antwerp in 1575 he was imprisoned but<br />

was released and could return to England. In London he was appointed Consul<br />

for the <strong>Dutch</strong> merchants.<br />

Director in chief of the "Nederlandsche Lloyd" Insurance Company.<br />

Together with Max Bartels (q.v.), who was employee of the Ned. Lloyd office,<br />

he founded the Bartels-ter Meulen collection of European animals, esp.<br />

bi.rds, stuffed by Max Bartels. Later on this collection was enriched with<br />

animals from the <strong>Dutch</strong> East Indies. The collection was bequeathed to the<br />

Zool. Mus. Amsterdam, An inventory list (1925) is in the RMNH. Snouckaert<br />
