He possessed a collection of shells, the origin of which is unknown, Also<br />

some stuffed birds and mammals, molluscs from the <strong>Dutch</strong> East and West Indies,<br />

determined at the RMNH, which kept 50 of them.<br />

1354. SCHLEGEL, Herman - 10 June 1804 Altenburg (Thuringia, Germany) - 17<br />

Jan. 1884 Leiden. After having worked at the Nat. Hist. Museum of Vienna he<br />

came to Leiden, where he became taxidermist at the 1\MNH in 1825. In 1828 he<br />

became Keeper of the dept. of vertebrates, osteology and fossils. After the<br />

death of Temminck (q.v.) in 1858 he became Director.<br />

Schlegel did much to enlarge the collections of the RMNH, According to the<br />

inventory of Jan. 1882 the museum contained 7,500 mammals, 51,000 birds,<br />

10,000 snakes, etc., 34,000 fishes, 80,000 insects, 4,655 lobsters, crabs,<br />

etc., 25,000 shells, 550 worms, 1,850 radiata, 930 nests, 6,000 eggs, arid a<br />

collection of skeletons and skulls of 4,600 mammals, 1, 730 birds, 400<br />

snakes, etc., 600 fishes. Already in 1827 Schlegel became acquainted with<br />

the museum of van Lidth de Jeude (q.v.). After the death of his first wife,<br />

Schlegel remarried in 1869 with van Lidth de Jeude's stepdaughter. Most of<br />

Schlegel's publications are on ornithology, a.o.: "De vogels van Nederland<br />

beschreven en afgebeeld", 1854-1858, all 362 plates are drawn by himself;<br />

He possessed a large cabinet from which he began to describe the Lacerta amboinense<br />

(1768). Vosmaer mentions a sale catalogue Amsterdam 1769. Cat.<br />

Boekh. nr. 362, auction 13 July 1769. Ferrner 1910, p. 356 (v. 1759); Sander<br />

1783, I, p. 594 (v. 22 Aug. 1777 and suggests that Pieter Boddaert (q.v.)<br />

got the cabinet after Schlosser 1 s death). Boddaert actually continued the<br />

description of some animals of the cabinet: De Chaetodonte Argo, 1770; De<br />
