- 18 Oct. 1866 Munich. 1821 Court physician of King William III; in
1822 to Japan, via the Dutch East Indies; 1823-1829 medical officer of the
Dutch trading company on Decima, Nagasaki, Japan. Since 1830 at Leiden.
During his stay on Decima he brought together an elaborate collection of
plants, animals and ethnographic material.
The first series in 6 parts of "Fauna Japonica", with 119 coloured plates,
published between 1833 and 1850 by von Siebold was based on a collection of
specimens, prepared during his stay on Decima. Schlegel contributed to the
reptiles, Temminck to the terrestrial mammals and W. de Haan to the invertebrates.
The plates for this work are preserved in the RMNH and have been republished
in: L.B. Holthuis & T. Sakai: Ph.F. von Siebold and the Fauna Japonica:
a history of early Japanese zoology. In 1830 von Siebold founded a
"Japansch Museum" near Leiden, this museum came in the possession of the
State in 1837 (now "Museum voor Volkenkunde"). His extensive collection of
