1822 to Japan, via the <strong>Dutch</strong> East Indies; 1823-1829 medical officer of the<br />

<strong>Dutch</strong> trading company on Decima, Nagasaki, Japan. Since 1830 at Leiden.<br />

During his stay on Decima he brought together an elaborate collection of<br />

plants, animals and ethnographic material.<br />

The first series in 6 parts of "Fauna Japonica", with 119 coloured plates,<br />

published between 1833 and 1850 by von Siebold was based on a collection of<br />

specimens, prepared during his stay on Decima. Schlegel contributed to the<br />

reptiles, Temminck to the terrestrial mammals and W. de Haan to the invertebrates.<br />

The plates for this work are preserved in the RMNH and have been republished<br />

in: L.B. Holthuis & T. Sakai: Ph.F. von Siebold and the Fauna Japonica:<br />

a history of early Japanese zoology. In 1830 von Siebold founded a<br />

"Japansch Museum" near Leiden, this museum came in the possession of the<br />

State in 1837 (now "Museum voor Volkenkunde"). His extensive collection of<br />
