741. HOUTTUYN, Martinus - 1720 Hoorn - 27 April 1798 Amsterdam. Physician<br />

at Hoorn and Amsterdam (Rozengracht), Member of the Zeeuwsch Genootschap and<br />

of the Hollandsche Maatschappij. Well known for his work on the 3 Kingdoms<br />

of Nature following Linnaeus 1 system (Natuurlijke Historie of uitvoerige beschrijving<br />

der dieren, planten en mineralen volgens het samenstel van den<br />

Heer Linnaeus. 1761-1785, 3 parts in 37 vols.), According to Jensen, Houttuyn<br />

seems to have promoted the travel of Thunberg to Japan,<br />

He possessed a large cabinet: products from the sea, animals in liquor,<br />

dried animals, stuffed birds (some of them in boxes), butterflies and other<br />

insects and shells, plants and minerals. Murray 1904, II, gives 2 catalogues:<br />

Martin Houttuyn: Musaei Houttuiniani Pars I, quae spectat regnum animale,<br />

Amsterdam 1786, 178 p. (see also Engelmann 1861, II, p. 1607); and Animalium<br />

Musaei Houttuynianae rudera, Amsterdam 1787. H. Engel: Proposed use<br />

of the the plenary powers to suppress for nomenclatorial purposes the catalogue<br />

of the collection of animals formed by Martinus Houttuyn prepared under<br />

the title: "Animalium musaei Houttuinianae index" in connection with the<br />

sale of the collection which took place in 1787, in: Bull. Zool. Nomencl.<br />

1952, VI, p. 292-303; see also opinion 380 (XII, part 1, p. 1-32, 1956). His<br />

collections were auctioned 14 March 1787 seq. and 30-31 March 1789 at Amsterdam.<br />
